Letter to the Editor

Adams County Ballot Question 1A and Commerce City Ballot Question 2A are worthy of consideration. When term limitations were voted and changed, the basic reason for most people was: we were tired of “professional politicians”. This continues to be a valid reason for term limits. However, changing the term limits from two to three terms is not allowing the problem of “professional politicians” to reinvent again. It does allow a person elected to a position to continue to learn and be active in the knowledge of his/her position. This can be a positive for the electors. The choice of three terms verses two terms does not prevent new people from running against the incumbent. Please give these ballot issues thought and consideration.

Collete and Betty, I think you both hit the nail on the head.
The urcc is their "outside" group, many of them started as the recall the mayor group. Then they pulled in a few who truely want the history preserved.
Writing history is great, but I heard that they only want their vesion included and have turned others information away!!
Now the city gives them money to go with the stuff they already got from Community Enterprise??
I can guess where that will go.

After just reading some comments on this blog, I realize, as I have before, that the only hope for Commerce City is education. You can tell just by reading comments on the blog if a person is open minded and well read. You do not need a college or even high school degree to become educated BUT you do have to be open minded, not bigoted, not racist and you need to deal in the truth and NOT rumors. Thank you. Please become educated.

Vote for Gene Leffel, Ward I Candidate
Ward 1 Candidate
YOUR ONLY
LOGICAL CHOICE FOR
EXPERIENCED

REPRESENTATION
AT CITY HALL
DON’T TAKE CHANCES !!!
The other Ward 1 candidates have not invested the time and effort to become familiar with the issues that Ward 1 residents face every day. The other candidates have not worked shoulder to shoulder with the citizens.
GENE LEFFEL has been very active in our city for 30 years getting to know the residents and their concerns with our city government first hand. He understands the citizens of our community need honest representation at city hall, not resentment. Your rights as citizens need a strong voice that will be heard CLEARLY at CITY COUNCIL, representing your future.
GENE LEFFEL has attended literally all City Council meetings since July, 2004, from beginning to end. That is over 250 meetings friends !!!
GENE LEFFEL will not be another “rubber stamp or yes man” on CITY COUNCIL. He will work hard preserving your rights as CITIZENS.
He does not agree with the idea of bulldozing original parts of our city for the benefit of outside interests. Contact Gene Leffel at 303-287-3075

He is not a FASTRACKS STATION or
I-70 Realignment BOARD MEMBER, he is a meeting attender, maybe again just for the free food?

Also amazing, how one who CAN'T WORK, can do all the campaign work of erecting signs, and re-erecting signs, and all that other campaign stuff, he must be self employed.

It's a great idea Teeter has, but it has been done before....and I can't help but think after her support letter for 2A (wanting to be our next mayor) that she is campaigning.
When K.S. and Safeway want 10,000 roof tops, for them to build, a letter with 3,000 signatures will not likely be the turning point.

The city owned land there, it owns basically no land in the north(only a small parcel near the dog park).
It made no sense to spend millions to puchase land when they have a great piece near upcoming development.

Commerce City needs to start addressing the illegal immigrant situation we have. It’s part of our image problem. It affects our schools performance. I’m sure it scares businesses because they don’t want to come here and have to spend extra money to verify people aren’t using forged documents to get a job. It’s costing us to print everything in Spanish. Report shows 60+ % of the city being Hispanic yet 90 + % of those are not legal citizens of our country and they don’t speak our language. That will keep the city from ever being unified or considered a great place to live.

Report from China, Gateway News said...

This was a travel day from Nanning to Beijing talk about a comedy of errors.

Plane was 30 minutes late taking off from Nanning and when we arrived it took forever to get our bags. We finally get to our hotel at 6:30 pm and discover that we had the wrong date to start our reservations. So here we are in China, none of us speak Mandarin and we are without a place to stay for the night.

We locate a hotel employee who can speak some English and he finds us rooms at, WAIT FOR THIS the Holiday Inn. Thousands of miles from home and we have a room at the Holiday. The lobby is beautiful and very Chinese. The room looks just like every other Holiday you have been in except the books and menus are in Chinese. At least it is clean and welcoming.

Interesting observation We have been in China for a week. None of us speak anything but the most rudimentary Chinese. As soon as we look confused, we are able to find someone to help. As a culture, they are the most positive people I think I have met. Nothing seems to bother them. If things do not go the way they wish, they realize it is for a purpose and they will learn something from the experience. They do not have the amount of "stuff" we have, but they appear way happier and more content.

There are many things we can learn from them as we share cultures.
If this trip teaches me nothing else, it will be that those few who try their best to degrade our city as not the voices to listen to. We are on our way to being a greater city then any of us realize. We just have to not listen to those few who wish to drag us down into the mud with their negativity.

We are a great city! We just have to stand up and let others know.

Every group that we spoke with had similar requests and ideas. China wants to begin forming the relationships throughout the world to held build the bonds that will assist everyone in creating a more harmonies world. The Chinese seem to want to become a player in the world market. This is especially interesting since this is what Commerce City has been dealing with during the last few years.

We all seem to want the same things. A life where we feel safe, where we can take care of our families, have the ability to house and feed as well as obtain a few of the extras, as well as to be able to help our children attain a higher standard of education and living then we have.

Later that evening we again met with Clair Pang and had a dinner at a typical street vendor restaurant. Ms Pang has been a true delight. She has shown us the part of China that most American never see.

somehow this day got missed
Sunday was are day to see some of Beijing

We walked in Tienanmen Square. The place was packed with people. We were approached by two college students who offered to guide us around the Square so they could practice their English. The history naturally was very extensive. The student told us stories about the history and showed us things we would have missed.

We then crossed the street and went to the Forbidden City. We rented an audio program that was suppose to tell us about what we were looking at but most time the information was lost in the translation. It was still very exciting.

In the evening we met with one of Alan's partners who lives in Beijing.

Talking to her, we discovered that she was born in China but moved to the US and took a job with a telecom company where she remained until a couple of years ago. She actually was stationed not far from where I lived in New Jersey. During the time she was in the US she became an American citizen.. She return home to China to care for ailing parents. She works in china as a consultant of sorts. Actually more of a broker. What she does is looks for a need and tries to fill it. She has brokered many types of deals between Chinese and other country companies during her time here.

Since she was living in America for such a long time but was also brought up in China, she is able to understand the cultures of both which really helps with building relationships. She really gave us large amount of information about working in China.

Mayor Paul,

I don't care what kind of sarcastic remarks my council so called rep Jim Benson says about the Chinese delegation. I am 100% behind you and 100% behind the idea of bring Chinese business to Commerce City.

Keep up the good work!

I LOVE IT!

Does 27J have the same deal with the city, if not, why not?

I enjoy reading the mayor's china info.
It feels good to have reached a point in time where our city is being seen as the wonderful place it is.
Not only in the county, metro area, but now world wide.
I appreciate the effort that has been made to make our city be seen in a better light!

I am a follower of the Commerce City twitter and was wondering why they had no updates on how city was addressing the snow today?

Commerce City Parents of Padres Unidos host Campaign for Accountable Public Schools Education Forum

What: Campaign for Accountable Public Schools Education Forum will be held this Friday. This is an opportunity for the parents in the community to dialogue with two school board representatives who are filling open positions on the Adams 14 School District Board. The school board election in Commerce City this year was cancelled because there were only two candidates for two open positions. Because of the lack of a democratic election, parent members of Padres Unidos in Commerce City have organized a forum to get to know the two board members who will fill the positions – Adrian C. Schimpf and Robert Vashaw.

When: 6 to 8 pm, Friday, October 30, 2009

Where: Our Lady Mother of the Church
7290 72nd Ave, Commerce City, CO 80022

Who: Parent members of Padres Unidos in Commerce City with children from multiple Adams14 District schools

Commerce City, CO – Currently, Adams 14 School District has a graduation rate of 42%, one of the lowest in the state. Parents will be focusing on seven main issues to improve their schools: quality education, equal opportunity, fair discipline, accountability to community, respect and access, quality bilingual education, and immigrant student rights. This forum will engage incoming board members to share their views on these issues and opportunities that lay ahead.

Existing School Board representatives, incoming School Board representatives, Superintendent Sue Chandler, Commerce City City Council, City Council candidates, Senator Bennet, and Representative Perlmutter have all been invited.

For more information, please call Kristen Sharp at 303-564-5260.

Council needs to see themselves and stop acting like fools.
We ALL see you!

no on 1A and 2A

Irene said...

also agree, but not sure about hahn, otherwise yes agree.

Wes said...

for sure no on 2A,

aee it losing about 70/30

Anonymous said...

I say you are partial right....I see Dominick, Serna, Hahn, McEdowney.
Too many I talked to can't stand Gene.

Anonymous said...

I sure hope you'll are wrong about leffel and serna. Looking at their bio's and listening to them, I don't think either will bring anything to the team. If leffel wins there should be an investigation into the trailer park threat for votes.

Jean said...

can't stand leffel either, but he has been basically campaigning in ward one for the last 4 plus years.

We'll see.

Kyle said...

is Leffel the one with the bin laden beard?

AKA said...

reba is right on. about time!

Sasha said...

Dustie,
I just watched your fire v. police video. Excellent job, very good!

What is really funny is if you look at those that have banded together as a group.
They are all "against" different things, some very contradictory to each other.
It is like...."we are grumpy negative people therefore we have that in common"!
Benson wants to do away will all mobile home parks (tried to write his own regulations), yet his friend Leffell is suppose to be the protector of the mobile home parks and will "prevent them from being bulldozed"
Romine & Leffell want "fair enforcement of regulations" meaning don't go after 'cause they routinely break them.
Benson wants to have our image improved ...yet supports both Romine & Leffel( now there's an image for representation of our city).
Benson tried to change the name (along with Drotar) all of the carz club plus Bullock were adamently opposed to that, now they are buddies!
This is only a small sampling of their craziness.
What a group of disfunctional clowns working together to destroy our city!

Anonymous said...

carz club hated benson now treat him as his own. Rumor is benson is the back seat driver of leffel's campaign.
weird.

Wes said...

until we get some good citizens to step up and run for council, this is what we have to deal with.

Tim Dalton said...

Jim Benson wanted to go forth with a code of regulations that would improve the living conditions in the city of Commerce City, not get rid of trailer parks.
Tim Dalton

Anonymous said...

Mr Dalton you are wrong on this one.
His proposition was among other things, for the city to have the right to enter anyone's property to determine violations.
He also wanted the regulations so restrictive that the mobile home parks would have been forced out!

Anonymous said...

Word that I heard recently is Benson bought Gene some clothes so he would look more presentable?

vicky said...

so weird. I thought they wanted to pack benson up and move him out of town because he wanted to change the name of the city?

Anonymous said...

men dont buy men cloths.

Anonymous said...

what the heck does that mean?? Men don't buy men clothes?
I think someone was refering to Benson "paying" for Leffell's clothes!

Anonymous said...

If we really want to help keep our city going in the right direction, let's start a recall of Jim Benson right after the elections. He's clearly not a voice for ward 2 and can't get along with other members of council. I think most of us voted for him just to have enough votes to keep nascar out of our backyard. We need someone to represent ward 2 now
