Is Commerce City A Tale of Two Cities???

Is it Commerce City or Commerce Cities? Is there a North and South or is the city "ONE Quality Community for a lifetime"? Further, how does this fit, if all, into the newly adopted Commerce City Comprehensive-Economic Development Plan?

We like to hear all you comments...

This subject was brought up during the Commerce City Council meeting of April 5th, 2010 and brought to our attention by a comment left on the Gateway News opinion page.

So, is the plan to make the newlands look just like the core area?

Doesn't matter how many cities we are, we have enough plans and studies to cover them all!

Great conversation Gateway News
My take: We have two distinct school districts; the predominant language spoken in each part of the city is different. I think at least for the next five years this will be Commerce Cities. The people living in the north does not share in the principle that people can live in harmony with cement factories, refineries, tractor trailer traffic, pollution, industrial noise. I bet most in the north don’t believe that is an environment to raise a family nor live. How many times have we heard someone at the council meeting complain about the esthetics of the business next to their home? I don’t want to appear cynical but I just sit there amazed they didn’t expect whatever when they decided to purchase the home. Those who choose to live in the south area think the people in the north should be exposed to the same living condition.
They seem unhappy that people are choosing to live in a manor different from them. The bullock guy is mad that people in the north voted for the mayor who didn’t live in the city as long as him. The people in the south were mad most council members didn’t live in their neighborhoods so they voted only for 1 candidate in the last election to get bullock back in.
Who knows, maybe within the 10 years Reunion becomes a city. Wonder if that’s why they paid for their own infrastructure?

Nascar would have made this one city!

Core City is the ones who brought the Northern Range to reality.

As far as 2 cities....yeah, I think it is always the way it has been, but no one really wants to talk about it, because it is not politically correct.

Great Comment C_ City voter, we have to remember, city maybe one city, but not one school district but rather two, one failing one not.

I thought that is why city lights was published in two different languages.

2 cities? Get in your car and take a drive, then make up your own mind.

Namath, CommerceCity said...

North is a Bedroom Community, South is Industry, Hell yeah it is two city, What the hell are we talking about, the truth is the truth. What is so shameful about that?

Curious in Reunion said...

I would be really interested in the thoughts of the CCPD on the subject if Commerce City was 2 cities and where the line would be drawn at.

Yuri said...

So we can not say the South is Blue Collar and the North is White Collar? Okay, I won't say it.

Simple Solution said...

Hey, just build a oil refinery in the North and make it one city.

Art Hunt said...

Great Question! the city has been two cities since the north of annexed! No one ever wants to talk about it!

North and South Commerce City are completely different. Just take a drive.

I don't know about 2 cities, but 2 school districts for sure and I am glad that I live in 27J

This has to do with the new Comp/ED plan? Bottom Line, we have to do whatever we can to get any kind of business into the city. We have to catch up to Brighton and Denver!

we are one community, we all have the same problem, NOISE, NOISE, and more NOISE. Airport, Bands, you name it we got it.

Core gets the Mile High Music Festival! or at least they get the Noise of it, Newlands get DIA or at least the Noise of it.

City needs to get a sense of "who we are", a sense of identity. We have a bunch of starts, but no one is really willing to stick with it. We had the Parade of Homes and we tried the "North is a Nice Place to Live" theme and it didn't work out. We had the "We got the Rapids Stadium and were a Soccer town", that fell way side. We tried the "We are now a Music Town with the Mile High Music Festival", this has been okay, but we never get the credit for it. We tried the "1950s theme in Derby, which is mostly Hispanic", that epically did not work out. The city needs to have a strong sense of who we are or at least what we want to be.

I FINALLY GET IT! WE HAVE 2 CITIES, AND THAT IS WHY WE HAVE 3 CITY MANAGERS.

I was very sad to over hear some people talking about how the south part of Commerce City is Illegal and the north part is legal. This kind of talk is why this city will never move forward. A sad, sad day for me.

Taken from an Denver Post Article back in November: Both parts of the city? Sounds like 2 cities to me. Also, FYI: D14 is not the only school District in Commerce City. John Albright is NOT my spokesperson for our schools.

"The city, to its credit, is working hard to provide equal services to both parts of the city, but you do have that big divide," said John Albright, spokesman for Commerce City schools.

Wake up people!
Most cities in the metro area have diverse sections much like CC. Westy has has sections like the core, so does Brighton,Thornton, Arvada, Lakewood, Littleton etc.
We are still a young city in the north and with the economic downturn it will take a bit to rebound, but it will happen!

Anonymous said...

housing price points made this 2 cities.

To the Johnson Family:
We DID have the money in the northern range. Money was "borrowed" from the North Range Improvement District (impact fees) to builde that cool Pioneer Park.

When that money is paid back, maybe we'll have the money then. But the time value of money and our interest rate on the loaned money couple with inflation may not realize the same benefit of Pioneer Park.

Let's just hope it does get paid back.

When the north area meets the postal guide lines for another zip code we'll really see a "tale of two cities" that will be Gratuitously exacerbated by the media.
It will be painful to hear the smug news anchors go at it but it it may help increase property values

Irene, Commerce City said...

if reunion aka uppity farms gets its own ZIP code, your right, we will never hear the end of it!

Anonymous said...

nice Irene, and they say we are one community!?

Casper said...

there is more to that loan from to the southern parks, city took part of that for some other park in the north as a "retro" payment,

Commerce City is good at going back and paying things that the "forgot" to pay, like city manager expenses.

Such BS!

TBCC- go find something to do with your time to help people.
You an Irene want to create a bigger divide in our citizens.

I for one will refuse to hear anything the TBCC groups says until I know exactly who they are.

I agree, do something positive, stop with all the shock and awe posting!

I disagree with TBCC, BUT!

From the COMMERCE CITY SENTINEL NEWS:

"...When it got down to this last amendment to his contract, it was more than I and (Councilor at-Large) Kathy Teter could stomach. So we voted against it.”

Anonymous said...

Hey "Pro City" you say you don't want to hear anything more from TBCC until you know who they are, well who are YOU???? And TBCC keep up the good work, keep the pressure on. Until someone resigns or gives the money back, there are going to be outraged people. They may be busy taking care of their families and working two jobs, but they are outraged none the less.

All Commerce City headed on one path? Not a good idea. Southern area should concentrate on industry, north should diversify and expand into a business professional park type deal. All your eggs in one basket is never a good idea.

we maybe 2 cities now, but we need to change if we are going to move forward.

ALL of you who keep saying that we are a tale of 2 cities are just feeding to the image issue that we have.

Keep saying something long enough and it will become true.

Anonymous said...

Sorry HARD TRUTH, but the facts are not as you present.
The majority of all of the city including the NORTH said, "keep the name".
p.s. I live in the north and voted for the change, although it means nothing to me to have it kept.

3 cities, north, south, staff that live outside Commerce City!

Chad Askins, Commerce City Resident Brighton Shopper said...

Good point, they better make them in a contract, otherwise I doubt they would want too with the salaries they make!

I think it is required that some of the city staff live within the city limits! So there is the FACTS!

I do not think Reunion will have its own ZIP code anytime soon. It takes a huge population number to do that and we are not nearly there.

Anonymous said...

Zip code isn't just about population. It is about Federal Government. They would have to have a post office for the new zip as well.
We all know they are in a financial bind and are planing to cut services....so I doubt the zip will come anytime soon.
Sad though,

Anonymous said...

only two members of the city staff are required to live in commerce city, the city manager and the chief of police, no one else and they both live in reunion in the most expensive houses in town

Anonymous said...

ya we are two cities, the people who are residents and voters and taxpayers and the city staff who take our money and squander it on their large salaries and perks, like flannery. hey flannery why dont you drive around southern commerce city sometime and get out of your car and talk to the citizens, ask them what they think about your house deal. they would love to tell you. since you wont let any citizen ask questions at city council anymore.

Anonymous said...

The goes the resentment again from the good ole boys and their spouses. Do expect those in that salary range to live in the core city? I can’t believe the people who have lived there for years are now upset because they annexed a more desirable family friendly area.
The north area is the home of many city employees who previously refused to live here.
For another conversation:
Is the city wasting time and money trying to put lipstick on a pig? I believe the city should market south Commerce City for what’s been proven successful, refineries, warehousing, manufacturing, trucking, recycling.
