FOR THE GOOD OF THE CHILDREN OR FOR YOUR OWN DAMN GOOD?

Opinion Article by Editor Kathy McIntyre

This is a distressing state of affairs. The Gateway News has been made aware of a recent text conversation between Commerce City Mayor Pro Tem Tracey Snyder and Colorado State Representative House District 32 Edward Casso. It is very disappointing because it points out that we may have elected someone to represent us at the Capital in Denver who apparently cannot put aside his personal vendettas for the greater good of the children in our community. In the texts, Casso says that he is supporting another Democrat (Reported to the Gateway News as referring to the election in November of 2012 and his candidate choice of Commerce City Council Member Dominic Moreno).

Snyder recently attended a meeting in Washington DC in her capacity as Mayor Pro Tem and as Colorado State Chair for the Democratic Municipal Officials. Seated at Snyder’s table was a gentleman from Comcast headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He mentioned to Snyder that Comcast has programs available for children who are eligible for free lunches that would involve receiving free internet service for these children. Snyder was very excited about the possibility for students in Adams County School District 14 and what this would mean to their success. Upon arrival back in Commerce City, Snyder was thinking that the program should be made available not only to the students in her home school district, but also in districts in Thornton, Colorado.

“I decided to contact Representative Ed Casso since he represents our House District 32, which consists of Commerce City and Thornton, Colorado, to ask him which schools in the Thornton area might benefit from such a program. Needless to say, I was shocked by his response and complete disrespect”, said Mayor Pro Tem Tracey Snyder. “While we have not always seen eye to eye on some issues, I thought that we could put our differences aside for the sake and welfare of the children that we both represent. Clearly, I was very wrong.”

COMPLETE CONVERSATION BETWEEN Commerce City Mayor Pro Tem Tracey Snyder and Colorado State Representative House District 32 Edward Casso

Tracey Snyder to Ed Casso
March 30, 2011
Ed, I know were not the best of friends but I would like to talk to you about something. Can you please give me a call?

Ed Casso (Mobile)
March 30, 2011 3:58:17 PM
I am already backing another Democrat and I am making sure this person has every institutional and financial advantage. Please do not contact me again.

Tracey Snyder to Ed Casso
March 30, 2011 4:11:50 PM
Did you actually think I was contacting you to ask for your support? Not hardly! I was calling to ask for your assistance on a project for our community thinking that you were still our Representative! Once again you have shown your true colors. I would not dream of contacting you again!

Ed Casso (Mobile)

Good

Tracey Snyder to Ed Casso
March 30, 2011 4:17:01 PM
Sorry you are so vindictive that u cannot even show me the professional courtesy that I have shown you whenever we meet. This is a good project. I was crazy to even think to talk to you about it! Glad to know how much the people really mean to you!

Ed Casso (Mobile)
March 30, 2011 4:18:51 PM
I thought you were done?

Tracey Snyder to Ed Casso
March 30, 2011 4:19:14 PM
And I thought you were not until November.

Ed Casso (Mobile)
March 30, 2011 4:20:55 PM
Harassing a member of the General Assembly is a serious offense. I advise you to stop.

Tracey Snyder to Ed Casso
March 30, 2011 5:38:38 PM
Asking my Representative for help is certainly not harassment. Ed, I almost died in an accident. I have had a few more important things to worry about than how much you dislike me. Sorry to have bothered you.

We want to know what you think in the comment section below...

Makes you wonder what other politicians actually are saying. Too bad we can't see all their communication. Hope Casso does not run for any office ever again. Not a good person.

Anonymous said...

Shocking and disturbing.

I think that just about everyone knows what a total jerk Casso is- and this just proves it yet again! How dare he talk to Tracey Snyder like that! Who does this guy think he is? I think that its a good thing Ed isnt running again, and that we should beware of anyone he is supporting! Sorry Dominic, but you need to stay on Council for awhile before trying to leave already for the State! Are you just using Commerce City as a stepping stool?

Anonymous said...

Gateway, somewhere I heard that Dominick Moreno works for Mr. Casso in his office at the state capital. Is this true?

Anonymous said...

This is appalling on Casso's part!
This information needs to reach the State House disciplinary board.
Weather he likes Ms Snyder or not, she made him aware she was looking for help for the citizens, he is SUPPOSE to represent!
Casso you should be ashamed!!

FT said...

WHATEVER! This is calm compared to what happens down at the capital!

Wes, Northern Range said...

Ed I do not think anyone in their right mind would categorize this as harassment

So, what does Casso hate all women or just Tracey Snyder?

Brent Keesley said...

Mr. Casso,
Tracey is STILL of of the people that you represents, she pays taxes, thus she pays your salary. You are way out of line speaking to anyone in your district in this fashion!
So disappointed that I vote for you!

So what ed is a jerk, who cares! he is not running again anyway!

all personal vendettas have to be left out of politics. Causes nothing but anger. I can put myself in Tracy Snyder's shoes. I wonder in Ed Casso ever once thought how this might make her feel?
Just mean, I have lots of people I would never have dinner with, but I work with them and work for the common good, because I know that in the end it helps us all.
What the hell did Tracy do to ed that was so bad.

I think this has everything to do with Commerce City! These are our children, and thank goodness Tracey was trying to look out for them! Dominic Moreno does work for Ed Casso, so of coarse Ed is going to support him! But honestly, who would want the support of such a lazy, mean spirited man? Ed saying he is going to support another Democrat and making sure he has "every institutional and financial advantage" was said to Tracey for what? To scare her off? To make her feel unwelcome in the Democratic Party? If they are smart they will finally take notice to the horrible behaviors of Ed Casso! I say go Tracey Snyder-and dont let Ed or Dominic or anyone try to stop you!

Anonymous said...

This has EVERYTHING to do with Commerce City and Commerce City council. Wake up there ProCity 2.0. First of all this is the Mayor Pro Tem of Commerce City and she sits on the city council and has been disrespected by a state representative and Casso represents Commerce City and the people that live there as does the Commerce City council. Wait, you Mr or Ms ProCity 2.0 and Casso have forgotten that right, because all you care about is your own power and your own self and in your case ProCity 2.0, all you care about is the "Golden Boy Flannery" who does NOTHING but takes EVERYTHING. And the people of Commerce City suffer in silence. SHAME ON YOU, SHAME, SHAME, SHAME! So Gateway please do not say this has nothing to do with Commerce City Council or Commerce City, that would not be right.

A Proud Republican said...

Between the Obama disappointment and Nichol's Adams family, being a Democrat these days is not really a good thing.

Pro City: Yes it does have everything to do with Commerce City and the city council. If the House Rep for Commerce City refuses to communicate on the most basic level with the Mayor Pro Tem of Commerce City, the city's representation at the House level is greatly diminished. And if Mr. Casso is pitting one council member against another, it shows up in how the council communicates with itself. Bad all the way around.

Kyle said...

I thought Democrats were the ones with hearts? This is a little surprising.
Also, yes it does have something to do with Commerce City. Both Dominick and Tracy are public figures in our community.

All of the e-mails posted here are from March 30. I don't know if Ms. Snyder has followed-up with anyone else, but I suggest she contact Jared Polis. While Commerce City is in CD7 (Perlmutter), the Thornton side of House District 32 is in CD2 (Polis). Some of the Thornton schools are Mapleton and some are Adams-12 (Five Star). Congressman Polis has his Adams County office in one of the Mapleton schools and is close to Mapleton officials. Gina Salazar is the lead person in this local office. Perhpas this would be a good place to start. The Comcast program sounds interesting.

Ed Casso has done wonderful things for not only this community, the Adams county as a whole.
Your little home town girl is not going to make it in the big house.

Anonymous said...

I think there is an attitude at the capitol that Dominck was the air apparent for Ed's position.
I say Dominick is okay, but he needs to put in some real time as a representative of the people, rather than take the batton from someone who has NO idea how to represent, listen to, or treat his constituants with the respect they deserve.
If Dominick is working for Casso, I am concerned what type of example he has been given.
From what I have seen and know of Casso (this text stuff is awful) it is the worst example of a representative!!
I will certainly give Tracey my support.

Team Tracey said...

I admit I have issues with Tracey Snyder at many points in her political run in Commerce City. But I respect that she had the heart and desire to run for a elected poistion. It is not an easy thing to do. You will never make everyone happy. You will get back-stabbed by your fellow council members. It is just the name of the game, but it is important work and I like I said I admire that least she put herself out there.
Keep your head up Tracey. You have nothing to be ashamed of.

Casso is in the wrong.

King of Olive Street said...

Not for nothing, but Tracy is the Mayor PRO-TEM of Commerce City and has years of experience past Moreno, who is just a kid out of school. I think real life experience wins over over-paid education.
then again this is just my two cents.

I can view this differently then most of you. I do not know Edward Casso, nor do I know personally Tracey Snyder. I do not even vote in a city election.
But I know when people get snippy with each other it is not because of a islolated incident but rather a ling history of battling back and forth. Edward Casso was dead wrong in this email dialog. But I have a feeling it was taken out of the entire big picture context.

Reading this blog has educated me beyond my wildest dreams. I feel like I have know both Edward Casso and Tracey Snyder my entire life.

I do understand that Tracey ran against Edward in the past for this position as a Republican and lost. She not has a desire to run again for this position as a Democrat.

I hope I am getting this right. What I would like to know is if Edwrard Casso is planning to run against Tracey in 2012 and if anyone know who the Republican candidate might be. If Edward Casso is going to run against Tracey that might split the Democratic vote up to the point that no matter who runs for the Republican side would automatically win.

None the less, great site, very informitive. I base my news sites on at the end if I learned something new. As for this site, the answer is YES I have learned a lot.

You ask me, I say both Ed Casso (D) and Mary Hodge (D) have not really done anything for Commerce City.

Anonymous said...

If anyone wants to know why Tracey Snyder changed parties why dont they do what I did and just sit down and ask her? There are some good reasons she felt compelled to change. And it was almost 3 years ago and nobody, until now, has said a word about it! Tracey has been through some pretty tough stuff in the last few years. If you get to know her, you will understand her. She was a better candidate than Ed Casso the first time she ran, and even Ed himself knew it! As for Dominic Moreno, i have to agree with what many are saying. He is young and still in his first term and needs some time on Council. He isnt ready. She is. Instead of calling her down because she is supposedly a "hometown girl" why dont we get behind our home town girl and support her!

Tracey Snyder is probably the hardest working council person the city has. Despite breaking her back she has done a remarkable job. She speaks her mind and she listens to the people. Mr. Casso's behavior toward her seems very strange especially since he barely knows her.

Zeek, just getting a chance to follow the last few days blogs.
Question, as a pro Casso person, can you specifically name things he has done to help this area?
How about Commerce City which is the biggest part of his area?
Or do you use the statement "he has done a lot for the region" without real facts?!

I say we all rally around our "hometown girl" and help her get to the State! Tell your neighbors and your friends and lets give her a fighting chance! Obviously Ed Casso is going to do everything he can to try to keep her out-by using Dominic Moreno and these "advantages" he says he is going to give him- none of that has more power than the people! We can help her with what matters most- the votes! Go Tracey!

I talked to Tracey Snyder over the weekend. I asked her about some of the things she is about. She is fiscally conservative, which shows, because the Commerce City Council has the budget balanced and we are doing better than most cities. She worries about kids and the cuts at the State level. On social issues she is right in line with the same beliefs I have. I like her. She is knowledgeable and doesnt mind if you stop her in the chip aisle of King Soopers to talk! I told her maybe she should post a blog about why she changed parties. Dusty- why doesnt the Gateway interview her?

Anonymous said...

Tracey did not leave the Republican party "high and dry". Pro Casso- here me now- I am a Republican and was one when she ran and when she left. She was right- the party was a complete mess. There was in fighting, lack of candidate support, and much more. She made a decision a year later to change parties. She is very moderate in her views. She did not feel like she was in line with what was going on in the party at that time. The party lacked good leadership, and that leadership wanted to change her. I know it wasnt easy for her, because we talked before she changed.
Everyone has a right to make changes when they need to. And those of us who believed in her before still do. I will still vote for her, no matter what party she is in. I know she did not change parties to get elected. Casso people will say anything to try to drag her down!

Dominic Moreno telling the Gateway he is unsure of his decision as to rather or not he is going to run for the House District seat is a very wise decision on his part! He is involved in whatever some of the Councilmembers tried to pull in DC, and he is backed and supported (and I agree with those of you who wonder about rather or not Ed Casso's support of him "institutionally and finacially" is even legal)by Ed Casso. Those things alone should make him stop and think about what he should do. He should stay right where he is.

When, Tracy Snyder and Ed Casso both ran for District 32 which includes Commerce City and Thorton, Ed Casso carried most of Thornton to win. As with all political elections this election was hard fought and not without hard feelings on both sides. At the end, both candidates burned their bridges to each other. I remember Ed Casso as an eager professional who was always ready to listen and support his district, he attended all his meetings always dressed in a business suit. It is sad to hear that political office cost him his marriage. I pray, he can pick up the pieces of his life and wish him the best in whatever he does.

Although, this private conversation with Tracy Snyder was made public, so that, the community could take sides and make comments (Which was exactly what the purpose was.) this entire conversation was a private conversation in the first place and should never have made public comment. The full intent was to have people take sides and was worth thousands of dollars in free political banter.

A true political candidate must make many calls before potential doors open. And, one must never throw mud to get their own way. That only shows how emotional and immature a candidate can be in how to get things accomplished. It doesn't matter how much experience one has! An experienced candidate would have handled this differently. So, one door stays closed, open another door with professional tact.

KL said...

I can understand completely why Tracey made this public. It pissed her off! If someone talk to me like this (even in a text) I would be pissed too and you bet I would act on it, just like Tracey did. What the hell did Casso expect, for Tracey to just roll over and take it?!

She asked him for help, and as usual, not only did he not help her, but he turned his back on the children of this district in the process! What you are saying about Tracey is just wrong- she isnt that way at all. Why is Ed Casso always so mean to her?
I find her professional, knowledgeable and always everywhere! For a girl who is healing from a very close call with her life, she is doing quite well! I am on board with the rest of you and am for Team Tracey!

That is true- Ed Casso did not attend the State of the City. He never does! And the Mayor gave Tracey lots of praise for all the work she has done! Seems pretty easy to me to tell who is in it for the people and who isnt!

Pro Casso.
When Casso lived in CC, he wouldn't announce it as his place of residence. I was present to hear him say from Thornton (yes, that was a few weeks after he had moved to CC) That was the begining of me questioning who he REALLY represented.
Seen him a few times after. He doesn't speak well, seems confused and has embarrased the party more than once. No wonder he isn't running again.
Estelle- everyone knows anything a politican writes to a citizen (Snyder is )is open for scrutiny. He was rude and I am glad it became public!!

I also have no problem with it becoming public. These are 2 elected officials. And I assume it was on Tax payer mobile devices and service plans.

Good for Tracey, and yes I will also be supporting Tracey in 2012.

so what living in Thornton is suppose to be better then living in Commerce City. I DONT THINK SO!

Pro Casso said...

you think anyone cares about a city has has a history of not voting is sadly mistaken.

Team Tracey said...

that may have been the case in the past. but Commerce City now has the North. and we do come out and vote. So we will see.

Core Comments said...

not really true. Ward one was at the top of the vote count last election. Not the North.

Casso is NOT alone if he avoided the whole I live in Commerce City discussion. I over heard a person tell someone that they live out by DIA Airport, truthfully the answer was Commerce City.

I think tracy is just acting like a baby, ed casso already kicked her ass so she should get over it.

Anonymous said...

tracy is stupid!

Ed casso has done a great job running house district 32 and i think if tracy won she would have messed everything up. GOOD JOB CASSO!

Team Tracey said...

ed casso so great for us. Yet to hear details of a great thing he did.
Actions speak louder then words.

Belle Creek Observer, the difference is Casso ran for office to represent CC. He moved there and still wouldn't admit her lived there. That is offensive!!

Interesting how three "anonymous" bloggers said negative things about Tracey.
I figure the same person sent in three separate blogs to TRY and appear as if more people.
Sorry blogger the majority, by a big margin support Tracey.
Casso is leaving, YEA!
Now we can get someone in who really wants to represent us.

Tracy if your reading this, you should suck it edward casso is bad ass and you cant compete with that!

CASSO RULES!!!

I think tracys a hater

Anonymous said...

yeah...how much of ward 1 was voter fraud

Anonymous said...

I think the last few comments sound like Ed himself. Perhaps he just found out that the entire City is onto him. And I notice when these comments go out they are first looked at for content. Telling Tracey to "suck it" is just plain offensive! But I guess that is all the Casso camp has to offer for a defense. Very childish. This is why Tracey Snyder should be at the House and not Ed Casso. She is eons more mature than he is, just for starters!

Team Tracey said...

ed casso supporters act just like ed casso.

I am on Team Tracey, and I will say a few immature comments are not going to change the facts! If you are going to talk trash, at least make it something I dont hear at my sons middle school!
Tracey is a good leader and has done a good job, and will continue to do so! Dont let these childish comments get you down Tracey! We believe in you!

Yuri said...

classy comments.
if you are trying to prove the Ed Casso is a great guy, you might want to take the high road.

Anonymous said...

those types of comments will not help the candidate that Rep. Casso will be backing.

Remember the lucky candidate will get institutional and financial backing. WOW!

Team Tracey said...

Least Tracey Snyder and the Tracey Snyder Supporters have class.

Anonymous said...

I agree completely! How low can Casso and his clan go???

Dusty- please go to www.thedenverchannel.com and view the story and video of a few legislators at the Capitol who have illegally taken meals from a lobby firm who works for Pennacol Insurance! This happened while they were under investigation and guess who is right in the middle of it, on tape and everything-this afternoon on Channel 7- our very own Ed Casso! He had a 350.00 meal paid for by this lobby firm! Please look into this story Gateway-and give us a report of what our Representative has done to shame us this time!

Anonymous said...

I saw this on the News last night! Ed Casso out to dinner with the lobby group representing Pennacol Insurance while they were under investigation? Well isnt that nice that once again our wonderful leader Ed Casso has made is look bad yet again! If you werent on Team Tracey before, you sure should be now!

Pro Casso said...

So then you saw that Mr. Casso explained this was an accounting error and nothing more.

Team Tracey said...

pretty damn specific to be just an "accounting mistake"
Looks real BAD!

Anonymous said...

Pro Casso??? Isn't it always an accounting err?
Isn't that Nacchio's excuse?

Team Tracey said...

“They can’t accept money or a cup of coffee and there was a $350 meal,” Ross said of an Axiom reimbursement that asked for $350 for a meeting with Rep. Ed Casso, D-Commerce City. “That representative on Monday (in the CALL7 story) said that meeting never happened.”

hmmm. so what are we suppose to believe?

Anonymous said...

It is always something with Ed Casso! At the end of the story Channel 7 said that none of the legislators were able to provide one shred of evidence to show they had not taken or eaten those free meals! And Ed's is the highest amount of all of them at $350.00 dollars! Kinda makes me sick when there are kids in this district that dont even have dinner some nights!
Pro Casso there is nothing you can say to defend this! Looks very, very bad indeed!
