The city has been fine for decades without a call for unions, why all of a sudden this needs to be done?

So sad.

You need a union in CC because the City Manager hires countless unnecessary high paying positions with car allowances that reduces the available funding for positions that are actually needed and compensation to those positions that are actually needed - not to mention the waste of tax payer money all of his made up B.S. positions cost that could be going to services or amenities to us citizens north or south- GN did a great story about other similar cities in the area with no assistants but more responsibility for their City Managers - please re-read it - Dusty can you please re-post it. If Managers and supervisors could join the union as well - they probably would because you never know how the next scheme Flannery comes up with to hire God knows who to do what will affect their job they have been doing and doing well for a long time. I have several close friends who are long time City employees who are praying for a change, and some order and integrity in the City Manager Offices.

Not to beat an obvious dead horse: how does this city explain all the recreational projects in the south when the average tax paid is 600 dollars from homeowners in south CC vs 2700 dollars for home owners in the north who get nothing from CC but an unreadable city paper and a few laughs from Denver Post readers.

there are more homes in north commerce city too.

Seems like those dumb "smart" people are getting all they can from the north residents before we bail into another city or form our own.

Where are our representatives on city council and why are they NOT fighting for us???

I want results not rhetoric - leave that crap in the house and senate.

Estelle Remington said...

Too stupid to understand

Unfortunately, this is a sign of our times in that the city asks citizen's for input and when citizens do participate and give input then those that asked for it, don't really want to hear it. Ed Purlmutter meets citizens in grocery stores (Congress on a Corner.) and carefully writes down what they say. Why do certain members of CC feel they have all the answers? Telling citizens, "They lack the sophistication to fully understand what is being presented." Is another why of saying citizens are too stupid to process information. This is another form of representative government in that we are supposed to elect or hire city representatives and let them run the government without being responsible to the citizens that hired them or put them into office.

A Mexican Cartel smuggled 45,000 lbs. of Marijuana into a warehouse in CC. Was this in anticipation of new Medical Marijuana sales in CC and surrounding areas?

Everyone!!
You need to look at the breakdown of your property tax bill.
The portion that actually goes to the city of Commerce City, averages about $50.00, per year, per house.
The rest goes to schools, fire, special metro districts (such as Reunion, for their parks, rec center etc) and gid repayments, library, RTD, water district and so on.
Don't assume that what you pay on your house taxes go to the city.
Try calling Waste Management and find out what it would cost to have your trash picked up.
p.s. the south part of the city has been there about 50 yrs, they have gotten a few amenities in the last 10.
Stop complaining and whining.
You don't like your property tax now, deannex and see what happens then.

Curious in Reunion.
No city makes money from it's residents.
It provides services to them and obviously wants residents, but having said that:
the roads that allow homes to be built are paid for by the builder, who passes that cost on the purchaser of the home.
Builders don't "eat" costs, so yes you pay for the initial cost for the road in front of your home as well as the water lines, and power to your home.
Try building in the country or mountains, you will pay those costs.
Anyone buying a home should look around, find out where the stores are, find out what special tax districts they will pay into, don't take the salesman's info as gospel.
Educate yourself.

Anonymous said...

I checked in to "checking out" such as annexing to Brighton.
We in the north would have to pay back to CC, everything they have spent to develope the north.
The city no doubt would not allow a 20 or 30 yr pay back. Thus the costs would be enormous.
Each home would have to incure a payment of thousands to CC in a lump sum.
Also, was told that Brighton has no interest in taking north CC.

Anonymous said...

When the city manager pays back the $450,000+ on September 1, city council can use the money for a project in northern Commerce City such as completing a park early. There should be something the community gets out of this.

Anonymous said...

Thank you Mayor Natale and Mayor Pro Tem Snyder for going to the Adams County Planning Commission meeting today! We know you care and that you are standing by us against this Waste Treament Facility!

Archer said...

"The city no doubt would not allow a 20 or 30 yr pay back."

Commerce City may not have a choice. Citizens will always win out. If no money until 20 to 30 years, then so be it.

Further, GID paid for it, not Commerce City. Therefore, Commerce City can not ask to be paid back for anything.

And Yes, Brighton would take the northern range.

Estelle Remington said...

The Northern Range is now about eleven to ten years old depending where you live. With each build-out the city collects standard building (.05) and Park Impact Fees (.09) that go into a special fund. And, for the Northern Range that build-out period was years ago. These funds are then moved by City Council for different projects throughout the city. For these past years, mainly the Core City area. Several years ago, a survey was mailed out to ask which improvements were wanted in the Northern Range. Since, Reunion already had enough Parks and Recreation and they were the greatest majority, they voted for more trails. A few miles of trail, depending on the surface can cost above one million dollars. Parks and Recreation uses a mixture of Federal Grant and match money from these funds for trails in the Northern Range. It costs about $450,000 for a small park and upwards into one million depending on the area size and use facilities. So, it was a survey choice years ago that directed city spending. In 2011, we need a new survey and different choices as we have doubled and tripled in size and needs. If, we have the money and Grants for trails, we have the money for Parks and Recreation in the Northern Range. To those Core City residents that anonymously call the Northern Range whiners remember it is our money that built your new parks, etc. The Core City has not had a build-out for about 30 to 40 years.

Leland, Commerce City, Colorado said...

I am going to take a entirely different approach on the proposed medical facility that seems to be such a pressing issue.
I say let them build. It has been too often that Commerce City tries to bully business that they do not want in their city limits. It happened with NASCAR (ordinance telling them where they can go), it just happened with the Medical Marijuana Business (proposed 10% excise tax). And now it is happening with this treatment facility (council against it).
I am sorry that not all business can be cherry creek type businesses but we have a strong industrial base and we need to build on that. This proposed medical treatment facility fits in. And the fact that it is already deemed safe by tri-county tells me more then I need to know that it will be okay and not a danger to people or water supply.
Commerce City needs to take a long look at themselves and stop yanking the welcome mat out from the business communities feet.
You do it enough and business community is going to take note not to do business in Commerce City because they are not a business-friendly city.
Find out facts before you shut the door on business. Especially in these times.

in short, I am for letting the medical treatment facility come to Commerce City and DO BUSINESS!

Anonymous said...

If anything cc will be paying the north citizens. cc has shown favor in the south which can be proven in open court. They have taken more in taxes from home owners and builders in north cc than spent on infrastructure.

basically take the amount spent in the south and what was received from home owners compare that against what northerners pay and what they receive and we have a cause of action...
Shea homes spent more money on roads than the city.

The city spent more money putting up signs in the north trying to take credit for the builders accomplished landscaping projects than providing parks and recreation for our children.

We need to ask Denver or Brighton to annex us into their city because cc's focus is not here in north cc.

They continue to fail trying to compete with Stapleton's North field and its continuance to separate cc by mexican vs US citizen in language, customs and or north vs south by failure to act on our needs.

Anonymous said...

Commerce City have no right to try and get money from North if they want to de-annex. They are part of a GID. GID would just be assumed by another city.

Make no mistake, Brighton or Denver would be interested in us.

Of course the CC council is the GID board, they would have to resign.

Denver cannot annex us at the current time. I believe their city limits are fixed at the moment (Stapleton was a one time exception and they basically owned the airport land anyway.) I haven't sat down and looked at a map to see if there is any part of Thornton contiguous to the CC borders.

Those saying that Brighton stated they don't want us - I'd be curious to see your sources.

Never say never.

And people in Reunion, don't comment on parks in the North Range. Yes we are lucky that we have our own metro district that provides parks - many in the rest of the range have to rely on CC for parks. There are pretty few parks provided and maintained by the city in the Range.

Finally, I also wonder if those "for" the medical waste business actually live near it at all? Why does CC have to become the dumping ground for the metro Denver area?

I would love to see how much interest there is in the north to separate from commerce city.
Let's face it, cc was not prepared and didn't expect so many to move into the northern enclave.
I bet most are tired of the lack of sophistication of our city management. Tired of paying for outsiders (consultant firms) to make decisions and observations we hired city council and city managers to make. Want to know what people think of cc, just ask someone what's synonymous with stinky town or other unflattering monikers.
If we're not 2 distinct cities why are you causing the rift printing spanish for south cc and English for the north citizens. That will only ensure to the people and outsiders that we have nothing in common and separate. Learn from Brighton, Denver and Thornton who have a huge hispanic populace. One language -one community!!!
We've improved over the past 5 years however outside of waste facilities or other industrial polluters we can't seem to attract anything else because of the cc name/association.

Laughable will be the grand opening of King Soopers on Chambers when city council tries to take credit for Shea's work. the city just stuck their tail between their legs and just rubber stamped the approval. Will also be funny when council members living in south cc shops in the north.

Estelle, Please run...or become the first mayor of our new city.

Accountable

Anonymous, my question to you is, "How come I know this stuff and you don't?" Obviously, we don't meet and talk to the same people. I hold myself accountable for what I say as everything has been carefully documented. As for City Council holding me accountable, first of all, they must hold themselves accountable for what they do and say! In years past, it was for thousands of taxpayer dollars for expense travel and meals/wine from taxpayer dollars with former Mayor Sean Ford's City Council. Today, it is about half-million dollars on the City Manager's taxpayer's house and Bonus with Kristi Douglas acting as Realtor and earning a very large selling fee and supplying the rental for 36 days and food supplies for another $4,000 dollars. So, who holds you accountable?

P.S. we don't want to pay any more in taxes either -just in case that matters

In fighting with Jim Benson who goes off on his tangents wanting things that have not even been looked at or discussed yet.
Tracey Snyder isnt allowed to do anything anymore, yet Dominic Moreno runs wild with the Citys money!
Everyone knows he is just using Commerce City as a stepping stone to get where he thinks he deserves to be. Its really pitiful!

Looks like Jason McEldowney will be backing Sumner in November!

grass roots

David Stallsworth has served this community since I have lived here about ten years and he is part of the Grass Roots of this City.

If, I were Mayor,Wish List: I would ask Jerry Flannery to step down. I would sell the taxpayer's house or raffle it off. I would ask the City Attorney to retire with honors. I would ask to create a Board of Immigration to conduct a study group. I would have a "Come to Jesus" meeting with Parks and Recreation about the Northern Range. I would ask for a different Incentive Plan with Building and Impact Fees, non-negotiable and time limits on each new plan. I would ask that employment standards be kept at minimum wage or above with no undocumented workers using e-verify and Community Services which would cost about $50,000 to implement. I would ask for a state audit of Adams 14 SD and close down Adams City High School for a State Board of Education investigation. I would argue against any Medical marijuana stores and any Medical Waste facilities near or within city limits. (The Drug Cartels are already setting up shop here.) In other words, I would like to clean house in Commerce City. However, I would like to see other qualified citizens run for Mayor.

Cheo, commerce city said...

Estelle,
What would you "Board of Immigration" study and what action would they take?

vikki said...

estelle,
I would back you if you ran for mayor of commerce city. you seem like your thoughts and idea are inline with how the city is all about.

Hyde, Commerce City said...

how do you raffle off a house?

In the Know said...

I don't think we need to worry about any medical marijuana coming to Commerce City. The industry is well set up in the cities that accepted them in the beginning of the legalization. There is no incentive to go or leave where they are already established.

Archer said...

Part of Mayor Estelle Remington's wish list: "I would ask for a different Incentive Plan with Building and Impact Fees, non-negotiable and time limits on each new plan."

I am all for this! Great idea.

As far as the rest of the list, let's just say very interesting.

Anonymous said...

So Pro Casso,
Its an honor when Dominic gets invited to the White House, but when Tracey gets invited, she cant go? Does that sound fair to anyone out there? Thats exactly what happened. Tracey asked the Council if she could use her discresionary money to go and they said no. Dominic doesnt even ask, he just tells the Council he is going! And nobody says a word about it!
Yes, I would say 3 trips to DC in two months is a bit much for Dominic. And if the rules that seem to apply to Tracey dont apply to him, than there is something very wrong here!

Estelle,
You mention some admirable ideas, but you seem to forget. You have (1) one, vote. I know that some of the things you talked about have been supported (fought for or against) by people on the council.
But each has (1) one vote.
As far as Adams D 14. You have NO authority over the school districts.
So ideas abound as they have with many past council/mayors, but you still have only (1) one vote!!
Of course if you get on council, member or mayor, you must realize you will be to blame for all that goes on, or critized for all that doesn't!

Anonymous said...

"dirty laundry"
Because some on council have no class, doesn't mean all should be lumped together.
Sadly Bullock did bring porn mags to a study sesson (when he was on the council before) to "explain his actions while in Vegas"
Hopefully things have changed,
but "dirty laundry" you can't attribute this to the city itself.
Funny how some what transparency, while others dont want "dirty laundry"
Gotta laugh, cause you'll never keep all happy.

Anonymous said...

Not surprising to see Estelle's plan is mostly stuff she or Council would have no power to do. Ask the CM to step down - yes but you need 4 more members to side with you to force them to step down. City Attorney you cannot ask to do anything - they work for the City Manager and you cannot ask them to step down or fire them. You cannot have a "come to Jesus meeting" with Parks and Recreation - this is for the City manger to do (City Charter prohibits this). as for ACSD 14 - The Mayor of Commerce City has ABSOLUTELY NO SAY as to what the School Districts do - so basically it is left to your Panel on immigration. There you have it Folks, Estelle's Plan if she were Mayor - she forgot to read the City Charter first - more homework needed Estelle but keep trying.

your right on. Commerce City is a weak mayor style of government. Council has very little power. Daily operations are entirely handled by the city manager.

You want to change this, it would have to go to the voters as a charter change. Commerce City is not even close to anything like a strong mayor format type of government.

thats right. everything is not going to plan. No economic development around civic center, no walmart in north, no sit down restaurants. no real hotels. ACSD 14 is not good. no boys and girls club. not business friendly, too many audits. All these things are going on, but no one wants to be a leader and step up to the plate. just blame the next guy.
We need to own our problems, we need to own our issues. are future depends on it. no more talk about north versus the south. no more council in-fighting. we need to stay on a positive path. It was said that no seniors from the north participate in the southern rec center. I hear people say that we are two cities with the arsenal as the barrier between us. We are not. we are one city. we are one commerce city. and we need to start acting this way.

Anonymous said...

Bullock was re-elected because word was spread for south cc residents NOT to vote for a 2nd person in the last election because it was the only way a south cc resident could win. I heard a similar movement is in the works for the coming election.

another reason this city will never be a regional competitor.

The older residents are happy and set in their way of life and don't welcome change even at the cost of failure. Most of their children have moved and started families in other cities so SD14 went to heck over the years. Over the years too many of them turned a blind eye as cc made lots of money and did nothing to improve the schools, roads or image. But once people began to move into the north and the developers made it a little more upscale and popular they've come out of the floor boards in an attempt to halt progress.
heard in the last election people were also telling south residents the city would bulldoze the trailer parks if someone from the north won the election...things like that scare me because it show shows a disrespect for our aging population attempting to take advantage of their diminished thought processes which we will all experience.
I'll support breaking away from cc

Estelle, David Stallsworth doesn't actually live in Commerce City. He lives across the street from the city boundary, He lives in the county.

This goes to my point that at least Commerce City should think about going to 2 reps per ward and get rid on the at large seats. It is only the real way to be fair to the entire city.
Rene was the only one that lived in the core part of the city.
All the rest of the at-large reps, including the mayor live in the north.

FYI, Estelle.
Bob Gaylor is under contract with the city council. He DOES NOT report to the city manager.
I would wager a bet that Flannery has a firing clause, Estelle that would pay him for a year or so, if let go (cause or no cause).
Yes the city charter does not allow for most of what Estelle's

It is correct, the mayor is one vote.
Just because she dreams it, or writes it doesn't make it true or possible.

What we need in CC is a City Manager. A City manager that has an education in Public Administration. A City Manager that has experience running a City. A City Manager who has extensive experience and knowledge about Commerce City and the metro Area. NONE of the countless people in the City Manger's office have these qualifications. Hire a real, educated and experienced City Manager and many of the issues will be resolved - or at least we will be told the truth about what can and can't be fixed- I a so tired of the spin from City Hall - give us someone who will stop treating us like children and spoon feeding us what we want to hear. The point is who cares who is Mayor- we need a real City Manager - neither Jerry or Perry fit that bill. I remember when we had City Managers who were well qualified - ah the good old days.

All McEldowney can do is talk, talk, talk around and around in circles. All he has ever actually done is waste huge like almost a million dollars of the taxpayer's money. What a big joke he turned out to be.

In Commerce City the city council and mayor had to be told not to use their cell phones during council meetings. The opposite rule was made for the city staff because they were "working". We all know that Flannery does absolute NO work in any regard and has hired teams of overpriced people to do the work, but my goodness at least in the public eye on TV, pretend like you might care. Then they have to comment on what other council members say. Then the others have to return that comment, on and on. I guess each one wants to make sure they chime in. Only the chime goes on for quite some time.
I can only imagine how long this portion will go on with the cameras now rolling.
Some of the old citizen communications portions would go for an hour or more. Imagine if you came for something before council!

Everyone is watching and there is too many ways to get instant information.

I did say this was a Wish List! Board of Immigration would be to protect immigrants from being exploited and used as Indentured workers. (Gaylord and Western Stock Show.) Also, to find other resources of support that are not Federally and State supported taxes. Food Banks and Charitable organizations. Raffle off House, sell raffle tickets for drawing that way one can recover the thousands of free rental dollars for these past four years. It is done all the time. Mayor does have one vote but has the support of entire city behind them to bring out areas of concern to the public. Mayor serves on Adams 14 SD Advisory Board and any citizen can contact State of Colorado with educational concerns and ask to meet with them or contact via e-mail, which I have done many times. I have read the Charter many times over and I am happy to see others read it. Anyone can ask to talk to Parks and Recreation as a concerned citizen, which I have done, several times. I feel, because Reunion already has their Metro district parks and rec building and they should not be considered in future financial planning for the North. Bob Gehler is the Father of Commerce City but it is time to hand over the baton. We need new eyes on long-standing problems. As a citizen, I can say that! You all bring out a good point as each council representative only has one vote and that the other members can use that against each other. There is a total lack of respect among current members and that is why so few citizens want to run for office. You act like we have no say in how our City Council is run and we have all the say read your Charter about petitions and recalls. We can ask for a vote of Confidence for the City Manager and Attorney as well!

Anonymous said...

I would have to agree with the person who said that just because a few people on the City Council are not good, doesnt mean the rest are all bad. I did say it was a wish list". Why not in the original post say "I know I wouldn't have the authority to do the following, but if I could - this is my wish list". You didn't do this though so now you are back pedaling which is a good start if you want to be a politician (that term doesn't really apply to City Council - they have very little power or authority and are non-partisan). I also believe that, they are doing an illegal thing.
Therefore the risk must be accepted if they are caught.
I might do the same thing to help my children (go to a better place to live), but all the while realize that I am in fact, doing something illegal
By the way nearly all other countries have much stiffer rules for entering their country. Also severe punishment for those who enter illegally. Mexico for instance, has very, very stiff rules. Getting a work permit there is nearly impossible.
Just food for thought.
