«Oldest ‹Older 401 – 521 of 521Anyone else get the feeling pro city and pro city 2.0 will stop posting to the blog shortly after the flannery and his gang are gone???
(do you see what I am getting at? Either employees that are being told to post by manager or manager himself and his staff members in the Managers office that have a vested interest in Flannery's employment)
Call me crazy but they are seem to be hitched to the band wagon with info at hand too often and for too long and way too enthusiastically for an average citizen...
Bet we get to test this theory after the upcoming elections!
As the old saying goes you can put a dress on a pig....
REALLY.... we are going to compare northern cc to centennial now... REALLY
Have you ever drove through centennial and looked at the commercial and retail that existed prior to their incorporation???
A bit more than just some newlands of Aurora...
Next time try Wikipedia before spouting off...
"The city was estimated to have a total population of 100,557 in 2009.[3] Centennial is the tenth-most populous municipality in the state of Colorado and its 2001 incorporation was the largest in U.S. history. Centennial is ranked as the 15th safest[5] city in the country."
"Centennial was formed February 7, 2001, from portions of unincorporated Arapahoe County, including the former Castlewood and Southglenn census-designated places (CDPs)."
Once again... If you wanted to live in Centennial or another community comparable all you had to do was pay double or triple the price for a similar house.... But YOU chose to live in good ole CC ( or at least werent smart enough to know where you were buying a house or were too lazy to do the research!)
CC is what it is
(hopefully everyone knows I am referring to commerce city not cherry creek... I just wanted to make that clear)
great points. comparing Northern Commerce City (Newlands) to Centennial is like comparing apples to oranges.
The Newlands have different economic opportunities even then Commerce City proper.
Ever area is specific and has specific needs.
If people are so upset over this blog why don't they boycott it. I know I am, just after I leave my next comment, and I come back tomorrow to see what is on here and then of course next week. But then I will boycott it!
Commerce City council is powerless? What about Benson, he seem to get rid of NASCAR plans by any neighborhoods all by himself. Council seem to get rid of Pit Bulls, Which needs to be overturned!
No, Commerce City council is not powerless.
I would say it sounds like the real power in Commerce City lies with the "AGENDA SETTING COMMITTEE"
Character Development
I think, Kathy McIntyre said it correctly, I comment on this blog as a private citizen not a politician. Some of the really critical and snide things others write attacking another's character, calling others comments ignorant just shows their level of Character development. Back Peddle: to retreat or move backward. I simply answered others questions in full. While, you hide behind, anonymous, which is consummate back peddling.
Estelle,
I was thinking more about your immigration board. My question is, if during your study you find that there happens to be residents here in Commerce City illegally, What would be your plan of action? What would you do? What would you direction be to staff?
Commerce City to host candidate information session on Saturday, Aug 6 from 9 am – 11:30 am at Civic Center, 7887 E 60th Ave, Commerce City.
Alright! way to go Commerce City Cougars!
Goo Luck Girls!
CC Cougar Kennedy Waltenburg is undefeated. You go girl.
She looks very confident.
If you're going to plagiarize you should post the entire thing.

Yes, this can be done in the northern range. Yes this will attract more businesses. Yes, this will improve property values. oh.. and YES the city spent the majority of the monies made from builders in the north for projects in south cc and ignored the north.
Board of Immigration
Cheo, Until, we do a study, I would not be able to tell you what I would do with the Board of Immigration. It is not whether they are legal or not. There are thousands of immigrants living below poverty levels in CC. Families go to bed hungry every night. They live in crowded poor housing. It is not Adams 14 SD responsibility to feed them out of State and Federal funds which is against a Colorado 2006 law, but, area food banks and charitable organizations. Americans are the most giving people in the world. I don't feel that big business has the right to offer below minimum wage jobs to any body except in areas of high tips such as food service. These jobs become more of an indentured wasteland. These immigrants paid thousands of dollars to come to America with the promise of a better life from someone who is involved with human trafficking. However, what they found was the same kind of poverty. My feeling is that CC has become a destination city because it was the cheapest place around with the fewest problems to disappear in. But, they just exchanged one poor situation for another one, perhaps, even worse, because they do not have family support around them. But, we have no jobs nor education to offer these thousands of people. Adams 14 is not set up to deal with these numbers of second language learners. We need a new school system. If, immigrants want to become Citizens then they will have to pay and work their way just like others have done for over two hundred years. Currently, it costs about $5,000 and the government gives one about five years to pay off. At some time, they need to make a commitment to America. So, first, we must find out the true picture of what we are dealing with, then, we must see what we can do about it. Finally, we need to pass legislation to help turn this situation around which has nothing to do with money from government.
I must be really in the dark about the supposed illegal immigrants in here. I consider myself pretty well connected I just do see the same world Estelle does.
Yes, of course we will have some illegals in Commerce City. But nothing like what Estelle is talking about.
Estelle Remington,
What I have a big problem with is that yes you will eventually find out that Commerce City indeed do have illegals living here.
It would have most likely come out in your "study".
I assume the study being a government study would be open to the public, maybe even have residents on the actual board. The results then would be open to ANYONE to report to the Immigration Officials.
This is a very slippery slope.
Many would have a problem with this entire idea.
Please everyone,
Remember everything her is opinions, and ideas.
Just because it is written/mentioned here (or anywhere), does not make it true or factual.

great story on channel 9 about Commerce City Graffiti.
If there has ever been a time in history where the definitions of what it means to be a Republican or Democrat is now.
Not the time to be flipping parties.
wonderful pictures Dusty.
Thursday, July 28: Amber Waves 6:30-8 p.m. Pioneer Park, 5902 Holly Street
city of lone tree got a art center. they only have 10,000 people total. can we do the same in Commerce City?
hope to see a lot of people at the medical waste meeting.
Please read your Commerce City News, August 2011 on the Adams 14 School News on Adams 14 Family Resource Event if you have any doubts as to the depths of poverty in Adams 14. The event, Wednesday, August 10 at ACHS at 8:30 am, which is funded by a Federal Grant. Information on medical support, legal advice, academic support, basic needs support, housing support and transportation support. Breakfast and lunch will be served to all families that come to this event. Does one put these children into grades according to age or according to academic achievement after testing? On the Board of Immigration question, I was just asked "what If?" and I answered that with an honest opinion. I have no intentions of running for city council so the question is mote! Information shared on this blog is pure interest and speculation to draw out others opinions.
I have no doubt there is poor people in Commerce City. To the extent of how poor they really are is unknown.Maybe a study would reveal some eye opening facts to us.
I agree GOP in CC, I completely agree.
Board of Immigration.
How do we even know that the huge Hispanic population are "immigrants" What if they are just Americans that happen to be Hispanic?
That is just it. No one really know the details of the demographics of Commerce City.
Actually,
We do know a lot about the population in Commerce City. We know the education level, average house hold income. As well as race, just to name a few.
I hope tonight's cc meeting is more calm.
I saw the Ivy graffiti video on channel 9. I am assuming Ivy is not part of the 6 inch weed rule that we have in Commerce City?
Lone tree is a unified city and this is 2 cities with almost nothing in common. There's 1, 2 lane road between the areas that's more for Brighton residents to get to and from Denver. The city splits us even more by printing in spanish for its south residents. Legal immigrants speak and read English as not to burden the country when they are allowed in.
first I would like to say Great Job to the Commerce City Cougars. second I would like to say thanks to all the caring parents and community members that are is support for the upcoming mill levy override.
Demographically speaking - with the exception of some of Reunion (some not all) the demographics for income, education, and ethnicity are VERY similar in the north to the south - don't believe it - check it out _ ED study revealed this a few years ago - the problem with most of you is you don't pay attention or you ignore facts.
demographics for income, education, and ethnicity are VERY similar in the north to the south of Commerce City? Really? That is an eye opener.
Demographically speaking,
I dont doubt it, we are one city!
I would everyone to take note!
just curious,
are the 2 school district "VERY similar" too?
Many have said that Commerce City only prints Spanish for the south Part of Commerce City, your saying the city is printing Spanish for all of the city. Interesting. Your right Hyde, this is an eye opener.

King Soopers confirms store in northern range is a go. Site will have fuel pad. To open summer of 2012...
Wonderful news about King Soopers. I am so happy. To all you nay-sayers, we did it!
Summer of 2012 is just around the corner. Looks like this area might finally take off.
Your absolutely right. The area will take off now. It is a huge anchor. You will start seeing other come in right behind it.
ALL RIGHT! GO KING SOPERS! NEXT IS A CHILIS OR APPLEBEES!
Regarding King Soopers/City Market
Congratulations to the Commerce City Staff, the Commerce City Council and Shea Properties. A long time coming.
Store in the north is a blessing.
When everything goes wring it is the mayors fault. So shouldn't the same go for when everything is going right?
Gateway News Rumor Patrol
Campaign Rumors set straight...
The rumor is that there is an IGA (Inter-Governmental Agreement) with Denver that prevents economic development on Tower Road.
After an exhausting research... So far I have found no such IGA with Denver. There was a No-Compete Agreement (IGA) with E-470, but that had to do with speed limit and traffic lights, not economic development.

Wes, others did try it, with little interest.
Benson is just pushing this now to "prove" to his ward that he is "there" for them.
His Grandstanding is obvious.
Too little
Too late for me!
Gateway News Rumor Patrol-
Thanks for the info. I had heard some of the same junk, being put out there.
Nice to see that they can't get by with it.
A BIG BIG BIGGGG! thank you to all the council/staff/devloper for the king soopers in the newlands.
Great job! Well done! Cant say enough.
I see this as a starting point for better and better things to come for the north. It will spark interest for more development to come.
Funny to say this, but this King Soopers announcement will actually help the 27J Bond this year.
just curious,
dusty where did you get all the details about the proposed King Soopers in the north?
We got the information directly from King Soopers.
2012 NO More Brighton Trips for ME!
Celebrate is Right!
King Soopers - RIGHT ON! Please let's all thank those who are actually responsible and as much as some of you would like it to be Jerry Flannery or the City Council or the Mayor or the Ed Director - it was not. Shea Homes made the deal come together and King Soopers did not roll the dice here - they are investing many many millions and intend to make a profit off of the store for many many years - so you have to really ask yourself - do you think it was because Jerry Flannery, Paul Natale or Brittany Morris asked nicely and said we will give you tax breaks for a few years that doesn't even amount to 5 percent of Kings total investment - give credit where it is due - THANKS KING SOOPERS AND SHEA HOMES! See you there at the coffee shop I can WALK to.
So Kings recently opened a store like this in Ft. Lupton and Greeley and another coming elsewhere in December 2011 - and they just remodeled several large existing stores in the metro area. It seems like Kings is making a big push and investment in Colorado. And they are building one of their new business model stores in Commerce City North- but this of course has nothing to do with King Soopers business model or plans - it all has to do with Flannery and his hoard of Managers and the Mayor - really it does - I promise really - they did it all - Flannery and Natale are both entirely responsible - Kings is only doing it because of the negotiating skills of Flannery and the "incentive package" they offered - really keep telling yourself this and you will eventually believe it - Flannery and Natale do - HA HA HA HA!
So very exciting to see that Kings Soopers has really started to build.
I want to thank, Kings, Shea and the city for making this a reality.
(Gateway editor, I did notice you left the city out in your thank you, that was kinda rude)
Dusty - I hear a campaign rumor that the new council once seated will hire an ACTUAL City Manager. I am crossing my fingers. I think you should ask candidates what their thoughts on housing and car allowances and direct staff (how many City Managers do we need) - candidates need to weigh in on this issue - don't you think?
I heard the rumor too that they will be changes in staff too.
Dusty, I can't give any details, but did hear this. Can you check this out as a rumor?
Yes.
Dustin,
North got Kings Soopers and South was going to get Boys and Girls Club.
any news?
Hope you all know that CC council drop big money to get a store in the north.
City did not drop any money, it is a tax incentive. Very common! get your facts straight.
There must be a small group left over from the recall effort that leave the negative comments.
I know that people in the north are ecstatic about the king soopers and are very much grateful to all who are involved bring it. Including the council (approved the tax incentive $2 million), the staff who pushed this thru quickly, and of course king soopers and Shea Properties.
I say forget the past. I dont care anymore about what council did or not do. I am so happy about the new store in the north.
I am not a fan of walmart. Thank God it is a king soopers. This really is going to make this area a nice place to live.
Thank you to ALL who brought it to us.
I am happy for those who live in the newlands. But we still have a long ways to go. We have Victory crossing, the old ACHS and the old Dog tracks that all need attention.
Still a lot of work left.
Cheo,
there is still a lot left in the northern range too. A grocery store is great, but we need more development, a lot more. we need a real police station, a post office, some sit down restaurants, clothing stores.
Please don't get me wring I am very happy, but we do need more.
I honestly do not think anyone is taking credit for the store in the north. It was all Shea and that is a fact.
Got to love how Mayor is at fault for everything, unless something good happens.
Mayor is just one person. There are 8 others just like him.
This poor guy has been to hell and back.
And you all wonder why no one wants to be the next mayor.
I say thanks to all including the Mayor.
Nobody make any mistake.
I Know People are very Happy about this in the Newlands.
It is only the remnants of the old recall effort that are making the negative comments. And they are small, very very very small.
Tax incentives take money from the city that can be used for other projects. if King Soopers is doing that much expansion, why did we need to give them tax incentives at all?
pro city? really? what did council do - say yes to any and everything Shae and City Market wanted to do.
sure hope those people don't try to show up at the opening trying to claim credit.
come on election.....
I'm sure the recall group including the bullocks will be shopping in the new Kings. be sure to laugh when you see them.
Thanks for the leadership Paul.
Oooooh anonymous and Dusty I LOVE the idea of asking candidates for their view on how many City Managers we need and car allowances and executive housing. It should start with something like this - Mr. or Mrs. candidate, the GN researched other surrounding cities and found out- XYZ and so on and in light of that - do you think Commerce City needs 3 City Managers and several other "directors" for "departments" that have one or two employees in them - or could those be put under an existing and needed department that already has a high paid Director. Do you believe CC needs to give the highest car allowances in the metro area - and hypothetically if those excessive high paid and unnecessary jobs were eliminated, what would you like to see the saved funds go towards for the CITIZENS NORTH AND SOUTH - parks, roads, police? Great starting point for candidates - don't you think Dusty!
just some factual information.
council does not have anything to do with running the city such as hiring. they only hire the city manager and that is it. all hiring and firing goes thru the city managers office.
response to - "Tax incentives take money from the city that can be used for other projects. if King Soopers is doing that much expansion, why did we need to give them tax incentives at all?"
Tax incentives are not taking anything away. It was money that would not even have if the business was not there. There is no impact because it is for the residents that are already in the area.
Second, tax incentives are dictated by the market. And this current market is screaming for tax incentives. It will take some of the pressure off the business community so they can operate and get entire economy on its feet. A 2 million dollar incentive for a grocery store is NOTHING! It is a after thought and yes the Commerce City ED department was in the mix of all of this and should be thanked.
thats all. I do get much entertainment from reading the comments. love the crazy ones.
Pro City 2.0
Your facts are close but not total in info.
The city council hires:
the city manager
city attorney
city judge
The city manager, by charter controls the city employees.
Any council person who directs staff without going thru' city mngr, is breaking charter rules.
Actually I saw a flyer where Mr Benson takes claim for bringing the Kings store.
Sure can tell he is running for re-election.
All of a sudden he wants to show up in the north again.
Also saw that he approved the city mngrs contract extension and heard his only complaint with the contract was the insurance/taxes.
Both he and Ms Teeter supported the rest of the deal.....hmmm
You are correct. The city attorney and the city judge are hired by CC council.
Thank you for the correction.
trying to keep up but it is hard.
1. When was there a recall and for who and why?
2. Why does the city council not hire all the department heads?
3. How does Shea Homes have anything to do with the new King Soopers. I thought they built houses?
I am sure other reading this have the same questions as I do.
The Commerce City charter is written that the city council will only hire the city manager and the city attorney and appoint the municipal judge. It is Shea Properties not Shea Homes that is the developer for the new King Soopers store. They are both owned by the Shea family out of California. There have been more than one recall attempt but never have they been successful. The last one was in 2006 for city council.
Shea Properties and King Soopers are responsible for the new store in the northern range of Commerce City, not city staff and not city council. Get your facts correct. We need new city staff as Shea Properties cannot and will not be responsible for economic development that is needed in Commerce City to make it the place it should have become over the last four years.
Always some confused ones up here - you are right 2 mill is nothing for grocery store - the point exactly - they were going to come regardless because there is money to be made here over a long time (try to use a little logic) Oh and by the way - SHEA HOMES OWNS THE LAND -THAT'S HOW THEY HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT!. Also a New and actual City Manager can still significantly reduce the excessive positions starting at the Deputy City Manager level to Department Heads on down to the guys that pick up trash. We need at least one City Attorney and Judge - this is not where the ridiculous excess is as clearly established by GN when compared to other cities.
Always hear that the organizational chart of Commerce City is to heavy or too expensive, not a new complaint. But it works for Commerce City. There is no magical formula, every city is different.
This current way works for Commerce City very well.
City Council Candidates
We need more qualified people to run for Mayor. How about that gentleman that ran for the city council vacancy that had 3 college degrees? What happened to him?
Estelle,
I agree. We need someone to step up for mayor and also was ward 4.
dusty,
commerce city does not have the music in the park on their calendar. is it happening?
I contacted the PIO and she stated yes as far as she knows.
This Evening, Commerce City's Music in the Park at 6:30-8 p.m. Pioneer Park 5902 Holly Street...
Due to loss of grant funding Community Health Services at Kearney Middle School clinic will be closed to general public as of Aug 5, 2011...
thats right! close the medical facilities (CHS) at kearney, but open up the medical facility dumps in commerce city!
Make me very upset!
I agree with Estelle, we need some qualified people to step up and run for mayor.
Maybe someone should talk to Dave Busby.
He has experience, is honest and came in a close 2nd last time if I remember.
Wow - splitting hairs - Shea Homes or Shea Properties - same organization and it is not the City. Pro City 2 - of course you are going to say that CC needs all the top Managers - we all know you are either one of them or need them to stay employed to keep your job - we all figured out you work for the City- a LONG TIME AGO!
Let's see - his 3 college degrees couldn't get him elected as a council person but will for sure work for the Mayor position - yeah that sounds like good logic!
follow follow follow follow follow the yellow brick road, it leads to the new King Soopers Marketplace by Reunion. love your wallpaper Gateway.
Xcel is a big disappointment. Go to their project website. They have questions and answers supposedely from the meetings they had. But most of the questions that were actualy asked are not on there. What a joke. www.xcelenergycherokeepipeline.com
and that is a long name for a wehsite too. So we all need to watch for the public hearings as Commerce City's planning department has already worked with xcel on the plans. It will slide right in if we don't.
I heard xcel was just a big campaign talking point. Nothing else.
Dave Busby already said no.
Besides why do we always go back to the same old people. I want someone new and fresh. I don't care if their from the N or S. Just someone one new and exciting.
cherry street,
I am with you! makes me upset too.
just a wish list.
Commerce City needs a real hospital.
Commerce City needs some kind of a cultural center.
No complaining. Just a wish list. I know it will take time and there is no money.
Just a wish list.
Anyone else read the URA meeting agenda for Monday night? Really- 3 city managers and just now the address for city hall is being changed. What do they do?
Cherry St and King of Olive.
Hopefully you realize that the Medical waste facility is an Adams county issue, as it is not in the city. (I heard the city is against it)
The clinic at Kearney is also not a city clinic, but it has consistantly received funds from the city. I guess sadly their other funds have fallen thru.
I am dying to see "new faces" run for mayor as well.
I cringe at the idea of Ford just walking into the position.
Speaking of the election, I just heard that JD Carsen is backing Jim Benson.
That disappoints and suprises me, it could easily leave her as the lone women on council. As a women, I think we need more representation.
Isn't there some qualified women who will run for mayor?
About the comment on candidates that applied for Johnson's vacant seat and did not make it running for City Council, Gene Leffel, Kristie Douglas, Ph D. Kristine Sumner all interviewed for the seat and did not get it but are now running for council. What is wrong with that guy that I remember with multiple degrees running? He appeared very professional and was interested in serving on council. We need new eyes on old problems.
Today on HLN, Randi Zuckerberg was talking about the harm that cyber-bullying does to everyone as these bully's hid behind anonymity. If, everyone had to give their names, many of these snide comments would stop.
Just a thought for everyone. Commerce City has never had a female mayor. Are you up to making history? Why not step up to the plate and be part of the exciting life of political office.
Denver POST: Brighton firefighter waives hearing on dozen sex assault, domestic violence charges...
http://tinyurl.com/3lsc9sw
There is NO WAY Ford will run unopposed - just wait - it will likely be McEldowney.
snide - true- accurate - logical - intelligent whatever you would like to call them - these comments need no author's name Estelle because the author's name is truth and accuracy.
Mayor McEldowney? I don't think so.
Wait for Union to run a candidate for mayor in Commerce City. Are not those the ones who will challenge Ford?
Got the money (dues) and power.
I understand that Ford used to work in the Department that pushed very hard for the Union - he was always an advocate for City workers - if anything, the union will support Ford - which is a good thing!
Union support or not.... I cannot fathom the idea of the Ford family controling the city again.
There must be someone willing to take the challange.
As mentioned before, there are others who were willing to seek the opening left by Tony Johnson, who didn't get picked by council. One or two of them must look at helping now.
Not to worry, there is still like 3 weeks or more before they have to declare they are running. Plenty of time for someone to step up to the plate.
The Fords support whatever or whoever they can get something from, either now or in the future.
Jobs, cash, deals, votes etc.
Never suprised by who he is involved with, 'cause there is some personal benefit coming.
Sounds like Ford knows how the political system really works - just the kind of person we need to clean up the mess in the upper levels of the City. Leave the politics to the elected officials and hire a staff that is interested in running the City and not politics themselves - the way it is supposed to be.
OMG!
You think that it is GOOD Ford knows the system.
I hate politics.
That is like asking the fox to watch the hen house.
It will just mean that the staff will do for Ford and he will do for staff, each to keep the other quiet, each to get what they want.
Yea! That is a wonderful plan!
