2011 Candidates

The Business Forum went well but asked safe questions. I was surprised at the low numbers that attended. The chicken question was not all that benign, it all depends on if the chickens lay eggs or fight. I was very impressed with James Romito, he seems to have a lot of knowledge about CC and how it works. I felt many of the things that Sean Ford was taking credit for actual credit should go to city staff and the Director of Finance, Roger Tinklenburger. We had a 50 million dollar reserve when Ford left office but he can not take credit for that and it was soon spent!

Not to offend anyone, but, Gene Leffel seems to feel our future should rest on our Industrial roots and the Core City when in fact the future is GREEN energy and a Northern Build out that enhances and strengthens DIA's capabilities with a Transit train that transports people coming and going to destinations and education.

Good start to I hope is a long tradition THE CCBPA FORUM

Great that CCPBA and Commerce City were able to come together and utilize channel 8 for this forum.
Tough Questions.
Had a STUMP the CANDIDATE FEEL for some parts of it.
I did learn a lot about the candidates.
I could tell some were nervous.
My words of wisdom is that you take all what you learned from the candidate and base you decision on that instead of just one particular forum.
Best thing I found to really get to know a candidate is to talk to them one on one.
Then you can tailor you conversation to what issues are important to you.
Also find that people are more willing to tell you how they really fell face to face instead of face to Broadcasting.

At the end. I only have one thing for all of you to consider.
No matter who you vote for, PLEASE remember that they are only 1 of 9.
None of them, NONE OF THEM can make and keep any promises they may have made.

They will be on a team of 9. They will only be a ONE voice of 9 voices.

They will have to work with Staff as you should all know now RUN THE CITY. That is why we pay them the big bucks.

Council does NOT run the city. They can NOT cut staff or departments or increase staff.

As for my picks,

Mayor - NOT VOTING
At-Large - Diaz/Romito
Ward 2 - Sumner
Ward 4 - Teter/Thomas is too close, both are good and I believe you will see a almost 50/50 split

NO NO NO on Mayor as Separate.
Yes on Marijuana Tax
Yes on 3D
Yes remove council from planning
and Yes on charter change for date correction.

Thank you for reading my comments and Good Luck on you final decision.

Heard them all speak at ccbpa forum.
surprised at lack of basic knowlegde some had about general stuff.
one was about Commerce City URA got grant for dog track to buy it. Actually it was a loan with interest from Commerce City.

Was not fond over the Jeopardy Trivia questions.

I personally know Rick Teter he would make a great leader.

Not really words of wisdom. Teter is just a good guy with a good heart.

Words of Wisdom for anyone running for office:

When asked a question, your response should be relevant to that question.

Don't change the subject completely and go off on a tangent.

If you don't know the answer. Say "I don't know". Be honest.

Trying to avoid the question and twist your answer into a completely different topic is frustrating to the audience and tells me that you are willing to spin when in the hot seat.

My Picks
Mayor - Sean (lesser of 2 evils)
at-large - Douglas and Leffel
Ward2 - Nielsen
Ward4 - Support Teter (not my ward)
3D - YES
D#14 - Anderson, Rolla, Quintana
CC Mayor Separate - No
CC Marijuana - Yes
Last 2 for CC - Yes (basic)

Vote No on 3D

Decades of increasing school funding has not increased student test scores. It has created jobs for teachers and revenue for their unions that almost exclusively support Democratic politicians. These politicians sustain tax-funded schools as a monopolistic cartel that squashes competition and limits choice for parents and taxpayers.

Nationally, per-pupil spending has more than doubled since 1973, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Meanwhile, standardized test scores have been stagnant.

According to The Nation's Report Card, 2008 math and reading scores were "not significantly different from" scores in the early 1970s.
Colorado is similar. Between 1997 and 2008, per pupil spending increased by 21%, according to inflation-adjusted NCES data. But the Denver Post reported that "scores on Colorado's annual academic assessment again came back flat, a trend that continues year after year. The announcement of no change in scores has become a yearly mantra."

If standardized test scores don't track with increased tax funding for schools, what does? Here's what: teacher’s union contributions to political candidates who support the public school cartel. Inflation-adjusted teacher’s union contributions have almost doubled since 1990, according to OpenSecrets.org. In each year, at least 94 percent of contributions are toward Democratic candidates.

Last year, the Colorado Education Association gave "$1 to Republicans for every $235 given directly to Democrats," reports IndependentTeachers.org.

What do Democrats tend to do after teachers unions help get them elected? Last year's "teacher bailout" is an example. A Democratic Congress and president sent states $26 billion in tax money to prevent teacher layoffs. These bailed out teachers pay union dues to again support politicians to further entrench the cartel.

But while test scores have been flat, unionized teacher employment has soared. According to NCES data, student-teacher ratios have decreased from 21 in 1973 to 15 in 2008. Using NCES data, education policy analyst Andrew Coulson found that government school employment doubled since 1970, while enrollment increased by only 10 percent.

If you really care about supporting children's education, you should not tolerate government's requiring you to fund schools just because you live near them. This is counterfeit caring — like saying you want to see good movies, but having a stranger choose which movies you see. Voting for 3D would perpetuate such counterfeit caring and cripple the ability to make a real difference.

If I wanted to enrich unions and politicians who support a wasteful public school cartel, I would vote for 3D. But since I want better education for all children, I ask my politicians to support education tax credits, which promote diversity and choice for Colorado's families.

I think that most of the candidates answered these silly questions as best they could; expect for Ellen Haug...I don't think that she can be trusted! She moved further down my list---nope, off my list---after last night!

My pick for Ward 2 (where I live) is Kristine Sumner. Her sign says "First on the ballot. First for the future of Commerce City" and after talking to her, I believe that she would be the best choice for Ward 2.

Observations, Mr. Ford filed no personal info or Candidate Affidavit to the City Clerk. He has filed a financial sheet, with about 1 1/2yrs pay as the mayor, enough to pay for every one of the other candidates for city council.

Mr. Leffel is being helped by 1/2 of the SACWSD board of directors.

Mr. Romito has bought GAS and A SHIRT for his campaign.

Mr. Benson has filed no financials as of yet.

Ms. Vialpando-Nielsen lists her address as 11810 Granby St., Brighton, CO, 80603. Is this in Commerce City?

Just interesting Observations!!

Estelle. Thank you for trying to inform people of the past. We are bound to repeat it, if they are not watched closely.
My last comment is take another look at the two candidates for mayor. Let's start looking for a replacement in 2015. Some one we can be proud of. Maybe one of the Ward 2 candidates that doesn't make it. It is time for a woman to help run the city.

I can understand that throwing money at something is not the answer.
But, look at the chart of money being spent in 27J compared per pupil compared to other districts.
It is not even in the same ballpark.
We need to get it to at least where it is on the semi same plane.

It is going to get really bad if you don't act now.

I have an issue with the Commerce City ballot question making the mayor a second position.
Maybe it is more of a clarification.
I understand it as you can run for a regular (ward/at-large) for 2 terms (8yrs) and then you can directly run for mayor for 2 terms (8yrs). And then you can not run ever again?

If this is true, then we are banning people after 16 yrs of service?

It does not sound right.

Yes, some will say 16 yrs is enough. I have the question of what if some young guy, does the full 16 then takes a break for lets say 10 yrs and wants to come back with a ton of knowledge and experience.

We going to not allow him and ban him from running?

I find this hard to grasp.

I will be voting no on Commerce City separating the mayor from regular council.

We just received our ballots. I can not support the candidates for Mayor, therefore, not voting for Mayor. However, I would encourage everyone to vote for the candidates of their choice. This is the first time in 55 years of voting that I have decided not to vote for an office. Furthermore, I not concerned no matter who gets on council because we have an excellent city staff who actually run this city.

Off subject: Do the people with chickens at home, do you just use them for eggs or do you eat them?

Cost wise, it is more expensive to feed and keep the chickens then going to Kings to just buy eggs. They are very well priced.

Just find it very interesting.

Supporters of Jeannette Lewis said...

OPEN LETTER

This is an open letter to all the voters, residents and citizens of Adams #14 School District.

We are the supporters of President Mrs. Jeannette Lewis.

We are shocked and saddened over the recent actions of the Adams #14 School board. The so-called, self imposed censure of our School board President or any of the board members was unfair and disrespectful to the office of elected power.

To censure an individual for having a strong personality is unheard of.

The other school board members who took it upon themselves to engage in this act are full grown men. We find it very difficult to understand how Mrs. Lewis could intimidate anyone, much less these full grown men. Maybe what should be looked at it is the charterer of the other 4. Are they so sensitive that they are not able to handle one person who maybe outspoken?

Mrs. Lewis has gone above and beyond her duty when it came to the proposed medical waste facility in the district’s boundaries. She truly has the entire district’s good at her heart at all times.

Because of these recent events,
It is our opinion that none of the incumbents be re-elected for 2011. It is our opinion that a re-call should be looked at for the remaining board members. It is our opinion that the board should reverse the decision and clear it from the public record. Lastly, it is our opinion that an apology should be issued to Mrs. Lewis by all four of the board members who vote on this. This apology should be in public and aired on channel 8 in Commerce City.

ps- Those of you thinking the Mrs. Lewis, know this. Like a tea bag, the longer in and hotter the water is the stronger she will get.

This is a closed letter to the supporters of Jeannette Lewis.

First of all an open letter is a statement that as a supporter you are willing because of your support of Jeannette Lewis to post your names. That is unless you are too ashamed to associate your name with Lewis or this letter was from Lewis herself.

I want to give you another term for “a person with a strong personality” in most circles this kind of a person is called a BULLY, especially if they force their will on those who do not agree with them.

You probably did not attend the board meeting or have not viewed it on channel 8 because the list of incidents of Lewis’s misbehavior was stated by Mr. Schiempf, after hearing all of this the incumbents and this included Klocker the chief supporter of Lewis voted to censure the lady who you likened to a tea bag, but was more like another kind of bag.

If you really want to post an open letter first start by naming all of you who are Lewis's supporters and then indeed you can call this an open letter.

After reading your letter I will vote for the imcumbents.

What have they done for the community? I haven't seen them anywhere in sight. Just curious. I would like poeple on the school board who are very present in the community, who show up and communicate with the residents. Who don't stand by waitng for the people to come to them. I want people who aren't there for there own agenda.
My vote went for the candidates that I see out in the public for he students first, then the employees, last the administration but will always listen to the concerns. Thats why I voted for Mary Moton,Anita Mercado,Larry Quintana, They will work for you and your children.

I believe she is the only candidate with a masters degree and has held the same job for 20 years. She was also endorsed by the Teacher Union!!!! She is an outstanding individual that you should have taken the time to get to know before you voted!!! My vote is for Angel Anderson and David Rolla. Good Luck!!!

She is a tireless volunteer and belongs to numerous civic organizations. Totally supporting Angel Anderson.

Who is Angel Anderson:
I was born and raised in Commerce City and I am a product of Adams 14; Oneida Elementary (now Hanson), Kearney Middle School and ACHS, Class of 1986. I have a Bachelor’s of Science from Colorado State University and Master’s of Public Health from University of Oklahoma. I am a single mother of two children, one a recent graduate from ACHS and one a student at Kearney Middle School. I am and have been an active member of the community; Derby Review Board, Commerce City Historical Society, ACHS Alumni Committee, Kearney PAC, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and History Hunter. I have worked for Jefferson County Public Health for 20 years, I am the Regional Epidemiologist.

My agenda:
The only agenda I have in running for Adams 14 Board of Education is to help make this District the best for our children. As a parent, I have witnessed the state of our District and instead of just complaining about it, I have decided to try to make positive changes. I feel that the Board needs to have representation from parents who have some higher education and can bring that perspective to the table.

To Angel Anderson: It is good that
you have come out of the woodwork and said something about yourself for those who don't know you. Everything sounds great except the last paragraph. You state that it is time for you to run solely because you are the only one with education (degrees) Nothing wrong with that. Unless you set yourself above the residents. Maybe you should check you facts. What you are saying is anyone in Commerce City can't speak because they are uneducated. It says to me you are better than the uneducated residents of Commerce City. That's exactly how the people in the admintration building think. That's what we need is more people on the board that talk the walk of the ESS.

Bullying in Adams 14 is finally going to stop! The BOE started at the top and now it has to stop at all levels of Adams 14. Dr. Sue Chandler, Administrators and Principals need to stop, cease and discest!! The AP's need to follow. We have some teachers that follow the lead too. Then we can TEACH the students that this type of behavior will not be tolerated in Adams 14 any longer. We need to send a clear message to students, staff, parents, The BOE, and community members that bullying will not be tolerated any longer in Adams 14!!!!!! As per BOE POLICY!!!!!!!! The kids say the bulling in school is mostly verbal just like Lewis. The teachers say it's a lot of bully talk then they are asked to resign. The students, the parents and the whole community see this. We need a new start in Adams 14. Our children need a better education without bullying.

Thank you BOE. Thanks Adrian, Larry, Robert and even Bill. You guys ROCK.

It leaves the impression no one else has any education but you, that you set yourself on a higher level. There is nothing wrong with education, but don't think you are the only one with educated. A lot of people didn't have the opportunity or support you got to further their education. It's a whole differant time now. There are people here with just that education, but more importantly common sence and experience. What you should keep in mind is the students, and for them to get educated. It has been well noted that you do not preform well in the public eye and has also been stated that you will not speak in public... I have seen you a few times since you starting attending board meetings, and you are def not someone I can feel I can walk up too with my concerns..

Ohh ps i dont think it should count for you to add your history hunter to your accomplishments when its merely your boyfriends agenda..

Apparently all of those educated people with all of their degrees at the ACSD administration were unable to keep the district from being in the state that caused you to run for the board. Seems to be one of those situations where some of us parents that went to ACSD and are raising our children here can bring your perspective to the table that maybe we are unable to have ideas about the current state of the district because we lack a higher education. You make me feel sad because before I saw you’re self-righteous blog, I thought you were the candidate for me.

Wow! Pretty negative comments!! As for my persepctive: I have known Angel for over 30 years and have never found her to be condescending regarding her level of education, as you are clearly describing her to be. Let me ask you this? Your personal bashing (poorly mis-informed, by the way) is an "instrument" or "characteristic" of teaching our children...how..and what? The BOE has had enough drama in the past, it's time to FOCUS on the STUDENTS!!!

Childish and immature manners see below:

2) Acronyms - def... def not someone I can feel I can walk up too with my concerns.. "definitely"?
3) Poor grammar/misspelled words/lack of punctuation

My opinion...the level of your maturity has shown with your recent post. Also, makes one wonder: 1) If you are a concerned parent frustrated, but hesitant to address your questions and or concerns directly to her... or

2) Possibly a supporter of another Candidate? I only mention this because of your acknowledgement of also attending the BOE meetings...

Shame....shame...It's about the Kids... unfortunately they are the ones who suffer most...

Vote Angel Anderson, Larry Quintana and Dave Rolla!

Very shocking and strange comments about Angel Anderson. She is loved and respected by many, many people and is a loyal friend and advocate to all the parents and children of Adams 14. And, yes, she is really, really smart. Someone is obviously very jealous of her. No other explanation. Vote Angel Anderson!

Wow... "Educated parent of 4” you are really throwing out all the punches aren't you? Seems to me, that someone (meaning you) is nothing but a bully.
And you have shown that you know nothing but hatred.
just goes to show what kind of people we DON’T want on the board…

Attacking a person the way that you have done is just a low blow, especially to a person that I feel would be a great asset to the school board and to the children of the district.

oh and my advise to Angel is not to stoop to your level.. I hope she get elected just to spite your meanness

Dear Editor:

I support Lynn Baca for Brighton City Council Ward 3. Lynn and I grew up in the same Brighton neighborhood and graduated from the same local high school. Her commitment to this community is years in the making.

Lynn’s motive is public service – pure and simple. She wants to serve the people in Ward 3. I am personally proud of Lynn because her campaign is about understanding the needs and priorities of Ward 3 residents.

Lynn knows she must earn voters’ trust and respect. She does not take this lightly. Lynn is walking every neighborhood in Ward 3, going door-to-door, asking for voters’ support. She is listening to Ward 3 residents’ concerns and answering their questions.

If she is elected, Lynn tells me she wants voters’ to say: “Lynn Baca listens to us. She is a great steward of our hard-earned money. She has earned my trust and my vote.”

So vote for Lynn Baca, she will work tirelessly for Ward 3 and the Brighton community.

Sincerely,
Vicki A. Snider

As CM Flannery departs we need a strong council to brace itself against deals already in progress should Sean Ford become Mayor. People like Jim Benson who already knows what is happening, we can't afford to let others take the two years needed to catch up. It would seem reasonable that Brian McBoom would become CM but with Ford in office we could get another Perry Vandeventer. Why can't we get a strong council elected who will finally think of the taxpayers and not about their own political careers?

So now that Ms Anderson has been put through the ringer, I want to know about the other candidates. Who is Mary Morton? Who is Anita Mercado? Who is Michael Bryant? What is their agenda? How have they contributed to the community? Where did they come from? I have never heard of any of them before this election. All I see on here is VOTE, VOTE, VOTE. But not one good reason why I should vote for them. Why don't they post on here the same information asked of Ms Anderson? I also want to know the same information about Larry Quintana, Bill Klocker and Dave Rolla, how have they contributed to the community other than sitting on the BOE and teaching in the district? Are any of the candidates active outside of school functions? Why should we vote for any of them? Hopefully the rest of the candidates have the nerve to put themselves out there and be as open and honest as Ms Anderson was persecuted for.

WOW!! I am shocked at the ignorance of people. Angel Anderson should never be ashamed of her accomplishments!!! She has worked hard for everything she has! Is this not a position for the BOARD OF EDUCATION???? What parent would not want someone that is educated to represent the district, has a child in the district, went to school and lives in the district and is involved in many community organizations??? FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NOT VOTED YET PLEASE GET TO KNOW WHO ANGEL IS BEFORE YOU MAKE ASSUMPTIONS BASED ON THE POSTS ON THIS BLOG!!! Mother of Four~For the record...Richie Castro is not Angel's boyfriend. Even if he was it has nothing to do with who she is and this election!!! Get your facts straight before you open your mouth!!!

WHO AND WHY, my endorsement for the Commerce City Council and Adams 14 candidates.

Sean Ford for mayor, this is really a no brainer, Ford has more than enough experience to lead Commerce City.

Kristine Sumner for Ward 2 will perhaps bring to the city a more balanced perspective to working with the change that will take place in the city’s administration.

Harvest Thomas for Ward 4 has the potential to get the core community out of the mindset of always having to continue the agenda of a family that has yet to see and accept the changes in the demographics of Ward 4.

Gene Leffel is probably the most well versed candidate running for the at large position; his knowledge of city government will add to the dynamics of the northern portion of Commerce City and maintain the direction of the core community.

Crystal Elliott although has her roots in the core community her youthful exuberance and candor posses the dynamics to work with the concerns of the northern portion of the city.

Mary Moron has demonstrated that she has a commitment to work for all of the students of Adams 14.

Larry Quintana continues to take on the task of calling for accountability from all segments of the district, starting with the students and including the administration of the school district, more than sufficient experienced for the task and a proven community leader.

The last choice is difficult, Klocker or Anderson, both seem willing to take on the task of serving on the Board of Education, but neither will step forward and state their position on the tough issues facing the district.

I have to write something about the comment about Angel Anderson. I think some of the people did not understand what she was saying about how her education would help as a parent on the school board. I do not think she was putting the citizens down who do not have college degrees. I think she may have been saying is that since she does have a college degree maybe the Administration would take the concerns of the community more seriously. What the people have to understand is that in Commerce City and in the school district we have many individual who are well educated.

What I want to say is Angel is not a bad person and maybe she would be a plus for the board of education, so do not let her comment on her education be the reason you would not vote for her.

Some of the smartest people I know and respect do not have college educations.

I have known Robert Toavs for a very long time. He does not fall into the corrupt political field like so many that have been in politics. From what I understand, Brian Maass took Sean to task during 2003 to 2007 over deals that didn't seem to be on the up and up, you might check Channel 4 archives to verify this.

Robert only wants what's best for Commerce City, and he will be totally up front with the people on any subject. He will not deal on the dirty side, but, march forward with his head held high.

Robert only had one conviction and that was over 20 years ago, for trespassing, I don't hold that against him. I'd rather have a person like that than one that apparently deals on the shadey side.

Robert certainly has my vote.

Anita Mercado I see the commitment you betray through your work at Derby Resource Center. I see that you also will be a strong advocate for our children and families therefore you have also earned my vote.

Larry Quintana I watch you on channel 8. . CC is much honored to have someone of your caliper in our community advocating for the future of our children and families. You are a Leader in every sense of the word. You have also earned my vote.

For District #14
Anyone who gets in is going to have to have a strong stomach for the financial crisis that is coming down the pipe.

It is going to be some tough times for all the school districts. If this mill levy passes in 27J it will be okay for some time.

But D14 will most likely have to look at some creative way to increase money needed to do a good job teaching the kids.

Why I am voting for Larry Q.

He led a successful opposition to the spending an additional $2.8
million in funds on 26 acres of property. School Board later decided to sell the property
as is for $1.5 million. The redirected funds of $2.8 million went into the classroom where they belong!

He took the bold step of requesting accountability for the results of the district CSAP scores from administrators not just from students, parents and teachers.

We are all voting for Larry Qunitana said...

Jeff Rodriguez says "sorry I haven't made any council meetings. So I am studying members now and trying to get involved, why does council want to stop the trash and recycling services? who wants to stop it and why? who wants to keep the services if both mayor candidates do. what do they want the extra money for, or what do the people getting in replacement or are we getting the shaft? that's what I want to know about these so called council members! and can the mayor veto their decision? I'm not afraid to leave my name!"

Unknown said...

I'll admit, I missed a few meetings but I was wondering why the council wants to get rid of the trash and recycling services?
do they still?
who wants it to go?
who want's to keep it? both mayor candidates want to keep it. can and will the new mayor veto their decision if it passes to be gone?
what are they going to do with that extra money and is it going to replace what they are taking from us? is it going to be better for us "the people!!!" or is it better for the council? I'll vote for who wants to keep it vote all other out!!

For Toavs:
Dude I admire you effort and I admire you want to do the right thing and change you life, I've walked down that road too, no one can throw stones, everyone has a bad past, and I see you want that change. but I think you need a little more experience in front of the public, speaking, and education. really! I'm not kidding I'm 40 going back to school and believe me a little education and understanding goes a long way. but I got to tell ya, maybe the next four, but I got to go with Ford. good luck keep shooting for that goal! now you can be a positive role model keep at it!

Larry Quintana said...

Hi, I am Larry Quintana and as you may already know I am running for re-election to serve 4 more years on the Adams 14 Board of Education. For those who know little about me you may not know who I am. I believe, that I am the most transparent individual in the public eye. Why? No, it is not because I am perfect, it is because I am a person that recognizes my imperfections and thank a loving God who has accepted me just as I am, one of His imperfect creations.

Voters have submitted to this blog some very kind and wonderful things about me and some have not, however I love them all for their opinions. This is what our nation, our state and our community is all about. It is about the ability to voice your concerns and not having to fear that someone will knock on your front door in the middle of the night and carrying you away into a prison for your beliefs. We as a nation have historically sent our men and women to fight against this kind of tyranny; many have been from our community. It is our obligation as Americans to state that those that gave some and those that gave all did not do this in vain.

In less than a week the polls will close and Commerce City will have selected the women and men who will not only lead this city, but the school district into the future. Our community is seeing a number of very competent and dedicated individual running to server our community. I know they are competent because I recruited some of them to run against me in the race for the school board. Not very smart some may say. I think differently because when all the votes are counted the message the community wants you to hear is, “These are the individuals that represent our voice in Commerce City and Adams 14, listen to them”.

I as a candidate for the Adams 14 Board of Education desire to carry the concern of your voice for the next four year in the school district. Your vote for me will do exactly that, so I humbly ask if you have not yet voted that you submit your ballot and mark my name, Larry Quintana as your choice to serve you and your children 4 more years.

Humbly Yours
Larry Quintana

Commerce City is a great place to live (yes I live in the core) but I would love to see it as somewhere to take pride in.. help these people want to live here instead of renting out their homes to 20 million people a year...
