1 – 200 of 453 Newer› Newest»I have GRAVE concerns regarding the Derby Redevelopment Plan. It has been reported that a rather large sum of money has been paid for this "project". Please tell me that the city did not pay large sums of money for some consultant group to tell us that a 1950's Cartoon Jetsons theme is a good idea for the Commerce City Derby area. I hope this comes to light soon.
Resident of Commerce City for the last nine years. Thank you Gateway News for throwing this kind of a forum. I plan on visiting and leaving comments often.
According to the official City website, the following are the City Wide Values: Teamwork, Communication, Respect, Honest, Integrity, Community, Competence, Knowledge, Achievement, Creativity, and Innovation. Now go watch some of the gateway news videos, for example the malfeasance one of Orval Lewis. I guess the “values” memo has not yet gotten to the city council members, oh well. Made if we paid these guys more we would get some good quality individuals.
It is my understanding that council member Reba Drotar, the once Mayor Pro Tem has requested a full accounting of the Derby project. I for one would personally LOVE to see what was spent and on what. I hope the staff fulfills council member Drotar's request and I hope that the media can get their hands on it somehow. hint, hint gate way news. I know Dusty will ask, that trouble maker will ask anything.
I came across these dollar figures from a unknown source regarding the Derby Area in Commerce City. I do not know if they are correct, but they seem very high and I am not sure what Commerce City got in return. Can anyone verify these numbers?
Consultant: Land by Design (for years 2006-2008) - $136,655.00
Consultant: Urban Neighborhoods (for years 2006-2007) - $198,764.93
Total Consulting fees for Derby (years 2006-2008) - $335,419.93
I have also come across these dollar amounts. I think the best way to verify is to ask. Maybe I will do the askc3 program on the city website. If I get any kind of a verification, I will post it ASAP.
I really do wish that some business could come to the Derby Area! Maybe a Pizza place or a good coffee shop. A book store would be nice. Derby is such a cute little area, it is just a shame that it is so dead.
Commerce City Resident since 1989
I LOVE, just really LOVE the gatewaynews.org videos! I have been watching the evolution of this website and it is just a wonderful thing! Thank You guys and keep up the good work!
Fairly New Resident and BIG Colorado RAPIDS FAN!
The videos of the Commerce City Police Department are AWESOME. I would like to say a big Thank You to all of the officers on behalf of our great city of Commerce City.
Commerce City Historic residnet and long time supporter of the Commerce City Police Department.
I just watched the Chief's Citation Award videos on the gatewaynews website. What an unreal story. I am happy that none of the officers were killed! Guys, we support you and please, please be careful. For all the Commerce City Residents: Next time you see an officer out and about, please tell them that you appreciate them.
I also think too much money has been spent on the plans for Derby. Let's put some money in to fixing it up!
Having said that, didn't the council have to approval those expenses? So why now the shock and questions about the amount?
I think that all the shock came out of the blue. I really do not think that anyone has been paying attention until now. Citizen Robert Romine brought up this subject about 2 or 3 weeks ago during the citizen communication. The actual Dollars have never been discussed until now and we still do not know the actual dollar amounts, just some numbers that are not verified. I challenge any of the council members to bring up the actual dollar amounts and what exactly Commerce City got out of it.
I want to comment about the seat tax (video of Tracey and Jim). After thinking about this for a long while, I think Commerce City should hold off. If by passing this seat tax will not get events such as the mile high music festival or that we will not get any cooperation from kronke regarding economic development, well that just doesn't make any sense. Thank you for letting me voice my opinion, concerned citizen
Are you kidding me! SERIOUSLY, city council just put this “seat tax” on the ballot just recently, what the hell is the difference. I think the council is upset because they won’t get the money directly, but rather it will go to a very needed program in Commerce City, which is a desperately needed Boys and Girls Club.
Since there appears to be a good representation of all areas here: I’m new to this state and city. In reading the beacon newspaper so many people that live in the older part of C_City is so bitter that so many people moved to the northern area and changing how the city is viewed. In the last election the guy that lost was bitter that most of the winning votes were cast by new residents in the north and printed a nasty comment. I’ll never vote for him or the others that make covetousness comments like that. If a city grows we would naturally expect some sort of paradigm shift.
Who cares if the Mile High Festival comes to Commerce City. The city will get nothing out of it, what are they going to do, go to churchs chicken! There is nothing in Commerce City for all these people attending the festival, are they going to stay at one of our fine hotels?! GIVE ME A BREAK! My suggestion is to make nice with kronke and continue to working economic development in the area!
I disagree, Commerce City will get a LOT out of having the Mile High Music Festival! We will be "put on the map" as a place worthy of having such a event. It will be golden for our image. Which in my opinion should be our number one concern. This is my second comment, I think this can be too addicting!
I agree with the comment about the south being upset with the north. The majority of southern residents I don't think really care, but the ones that do, really do not like the new northern area. Everyone is trying their hardest to mend this and become "one" city, but this challenge will be almost impossble, this would mean that you are going to have to change the way people think and we know that this is virtually imposible. Lets all of us (both north and south) get register to vote and let the demcratic process decide who will shape the city for the future.
I am surprised that there is comments on what seems to be both sides of each of the issues discussed. I would like to say congrats to all would have participated and thank you for keeping it interesting and very intelligent.
Core Citizen of our great city who recently relocated to the new northern range.
I visited the cenntenial area and the new orchards area in westminister. They are beautiful and I wish that Commerce City could have our city look like those area. Too bad Quebec is setup as a straight shot to all of the new economic development to Denver's stapleton. One does have to question the thinking of commerce city of why Quebec was setup this way. All mile high festival goers will head straight south on Quebec to Denver. And Denver will be laughing all the way to the bank!
When is Commerce City going to stand up to its bullies! First Denver, now Brighton, and now Knonke. Denver with DIA and now stealing all our sales tax with Stapleton. Brighton is trying to screw Commerce City on who pays for roads. and now kronke doesn't want commerce city to gain anything from having his stadium here. I say go for it Commerce City, lets pass this seat tax by a land slide! What is kronke going to do? Move his stadium! Not build on the prairie gateway, which he is not already doing! Everyone talks about one city! This seems like the perfect issue to all rally behind and unite!
So let me get this straight. Stan Kronke does not want Commerce City to have any monies via a seat tax, and Stan Kronke has control of all of the economic development in the area around his stadium on the praire gateway? Which he is more likely using as a huge tax break as a losing venture. And I do not see any plans of anything out there anytime soon. If what all I stated is true, then I say that this is a damn shameful situation. DAMN.
A citizen of Commerce City that is becoming more concerned by the minute!
Lets all just forget about becoming a resturant/movie area like those of Stapleton or the orchards! We are Commerce City and lets just be who we are and that is an industrial area. lets just embrace what we are. Lets go to conventions that promte bring new industry to our city. We need to do something. If we are not going to grow as a city, then we are just going to stay in this same rut forever. Lets get more manufacturing and industry here in Commerce City, we are who we are. One citizen even suggested that we go to a rather large las vegas convention where there is a bunch of industrial business there and we promote commerce city. Well, I for one agree with that citizen.
I disagree, I think the ideal forumla for any city is 1/3 residential, 1/3 commercial, and 1/3 industry. We need a good mix, and not put all of our eggs in one basket. Further comment: As far as getting a boys and girls club, I think at over an average of $4.00 a gallon for gas and record profits, Commerce City's biggest business SUNCOR should kick in and just give us a boys and girls club. Making Kronke upset may not be the smartest thing in the world to do at this point in time. Just becasue you can do something, doesn't mean that you should do it. A very good rule for everyone to learn.
Citizen for a better community
Commerce City Citizens for Recycling will be conducting a citizens communication at a Council meeting on Monday, July 7th at 7:00.
WE NEED you at the City Council meeting to show Council members you are not just a mailing list but 1200 community members interested in a curbside recycling program! Please show your support at the Council meeting on Monday, July 7th. As Trudy Smith reads her statement she will ask all those in the audience supporting curbside to stand as she presents.
THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY
Count me IN! I think there has been a curb side recycling movement in this area for quite some time that has little or no success. I know everyone is busy, but I urge all residnts of Commerce City to help with this venture and lets finally start acting responsibe as just basic humans.
Long time recycler, and new resident to Commerce City
Let me start off carefully here, I am for recycling. But with that being said. It comes down to dollars and sense. I do not think that the city has the budget to start a city-wide recycling program. If I am correct I do believe that the city of Commerce City take care of all of our trash pick-up and even that has been discussed by some individuals as a major financial burdern to the city that should be cut. I would be very interested in what the city staff of Commerce City project as what it would cost to start a city-wide recycling program.
I never said that a city wide recycling program would be cheap or in that fact easy! But if done correctly, recycling can actually be a money make for the City. Lets not just follow the herd on this one folks. Lets be the first to really embrace this issue and watch other cities take our lead. Remeber folks, see you Monday July 7th, lets make the NASCAR crowd look small!
I can't beleive people are even talking about cost when it comes to a issue like recycling! It comes to when do you just do what is right?! I support a city-wide recycling program and think it is a idea that is long over DUE!
Isn't that always the way. Let's not talk about the cost.
Well then what are you willing to give up the needed traffic light, new roads, snow removal? We as a public are so willing to say what we "want" or "need" but with no plans to pay for it.Everything costs.
It "ain't" free!! If we are so supportive of recycling, then WE should ante up the extra to cover it or risk loosing our trash pick entirely.
I agree that recycling should not be forced upon the city. It will only waste more of city councils time if enacted and one of the old guard was not appointed to oversee the program. I’m supportive of neighborhood recycling managed by either the HOA or metro districts. Let’s move to a metropolitan mindset; you don’t see residents of the Capitol Hill neighborhood trying to dictate what’s implemented in Cherry Creek. The areas of Commerce City are very different and have very differing needs.
I agree with the last statement, besides I think that Commerce City has a recycling center off of state highway 2. People need to not be so lazy and collect and take their recycles to the recycling center. Not everything can be so easy and convenient. Instead of trying to convince council to take some kind of action that will cost lots of tax dollars, the citizens need organize their neighborhoods and have some kind of system to collect and transport the recyclables to the recycling center. It goes hand in hand with the whole plan by the city of the neighborhood empowerment program. Of course this is just my opinion, but after I re-read it, it is pretty damn good.
The mayor of Commerce City annouced at the last city council meeting that his trip to China will be millions to us and we got a good deal, because the city only spent $600 to send him. I seriously doubt that we as a city will see one red chinese cent. I know I sound negative, I just think that as far as the mayor's trip to china, we need to ask for our $600 dollars back.
Resident of Commerce City
Okay to be completely honest I love to jump to the comment pages of either the beacon or the gateway news. I love the crazy rants that some citizens or even some of the local editors have. I think the stories are fine, but I really love the opinions of others. It gives me a sense of being alive when I read something and I completely disagree with to the most fullest extent that is known to mankind. I have had this feeling numerous of times by reading both the gateway and the beacon. Needless to say I LOVE this comments page. It is hard to grasp why the gateway news would throw such a place where anyone can leave any comments that they want. I have read everything and we have the full spectrum of ideas and comments all in one place here. I have for sure learned one thing, Commerce City does have some educated citizens when it comes to city issues. I really do not know how the beacon is going to survive if the gateway news continues to re-invent themselves and constantly push the envelope.
Keep those comments coming people, we are listening.
Honestly, what’s $600.00 when it comes to getting the word out that our city exists. Unfortunately we are known as the place where the stinky refineries are and rusted vehicles adorn the lawns of homes. We are now much, much more than that and growing. We need to send our elected/appointed officials to more events that may bring commerce to our city. I think my taxes last year were roughly five thousand dollars so I‘m assuming that’s about average so multiplied by thousands I think we can somehow create a travel budget. (Holiday Inn not the Westin
The mayor was able to go to China and meet fairly high up individuals and promote the city of Commerce City. This was all done for no cost to Commerce City except for a small $600 reimbursement. I think it was a golden oppurtunity and I am glad that the city was smart enough to grap it up.
Dustin McIntyre, Gateway News
Whatever, I still think that Mr. Natale is crazy to think that his trip would bring any economic development to Commerce City. I do believe that your mayor said that it would bring millions to the area. But I guess only time will tell.
Looks like old c-town wants to change their weed agenda. Looks like from the video I saw, we are going to go from illegal 6 inches to illegal 8 inches and 20 feet from the curb. Only question I have and yes it is a good one, HOW IS THE CITY GOING TO FAIRLY ENFORCE THIS STUPID LAW?
Citizen of Commerce City, Colorado USA
I have been in business meetings with companies and government and the new found respect for Commerce City is evident. Having lived through the "put downs" this is refreshing.
From the conversations I have heard, I have to attribute a great deal of that to the mayor.
You want an image change you had to start at the top.
I think the invitation alone to go to China says a lot!
I agree with the last comment. Commerce City I believe has come a long way since even 5 years ago.
I am glad that I live in a city that has so many different ways to get information. It is nice to have 2 newspapers. If you don't agree, think of this: Elvis/Beatles, Apple/PC, Honda/Harley, Football/Soccer, fender/Gibson, Bud/Coors, get the idea. Lets embrace both of these newspapers. It keeps life interesting.
I know that this has been said many times. But I think it needs to be mentioned again, As far as the Commerce City weed law, it is no different then the posted speed limits. We have to have a cut off black and white law that can hold up in court. That is why city council has this worded the way it is. At least that is what I think. I hear people and even a council member state that don't have this law because you can not enforce it? Well then lets just get rid off all the speed limits. Just common sense folk, just common sense.
I wonder if Mr. Jim Council Member Benson will be out on the fourth of July bothering citizens to get his signatures for his "lets get kronke mad" campaign.
I really have to say that the city of Commerce City has learned a lot from the past firework shows. These current ones are just getting better and better. Dustin, I LOVE THE VIDEOS. Please keep up the good work.
A BIG CONGRATS to Commerce City for having the biggest Fireworks Displays in the State! One more thing that will put Commerce City on the map.
Yes, the city needs to be congratulated, but the really congratulations really needs to go to the HARD WORKING Staff of the Commerce City Parks and Recreation Department. THANK YOU GUYS for a wonderful good that you do, year after year!
Gateway, NICE JOB on the firework story, and the videos are great. Keep up the good work. You guys have created a little Commerce City TV station that is just a wonderful thing for all us residents, both new and old.
The Biggest Fireworks Display in the STATE! Take that DENVER, and Brighton. What some come get some!
I was reading the comments left by others and did my own research on The Jim Benson seat tax. I can understand why he wants to do it, but I really do not agree that this is the way to do it. It will make Kronke upset. I think the boys and girls club is very important, especially in this are, but there are many other ways of accomplishing this task. Brighton has done the exact same thing with the help of the Taco Bell Foundation. Just topics for thought.
I GOT IT! The name for the "seat" tax that is trying to get on the ballot, Drum Rolllllllllll....
THE BENSON ASS TAX.
Yes, Yes hold your applause.
Does anyone know what the propsed percent is for the seat tax?
According to the Initiative Petition it states the following:
THIS ORDINANCE IS TO IMPOSE AN 8% ADMISSIONS TAX TO BE USED FOR THE PURCHASE OR LEASE OF LAND, CONSTRUCTION, MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION OF A BOYS & GIRLS CLUB. THIS ORDINANCE WILL EXPIRE WHEN A MAXIMUM OF $7,000,000.00 HAS BEEN COLLECTED FROM THE ADMISSIONS TAX.
Dustin McIntyre, Gateway News
I just heard about this meeting, I will be going for sure: On Thursday, February 10, State Representative Mary Hodge (D-Brighton), hosts a town hall meeting addressing the increasing price of gasoline and what consumers can do to save at the pump. She will be joined by a panel of experts and elected officials.
Fireworks video is really impressive, GOOD JOB Commerce Ciy Parks and Rec. Nice job!
I am a Japanese Citizen. I have been watching Dustin's website since he first started it. I have seen many different events. But the fireworks display that your city and the professional soccer team put on for the citizen is truely impressive.
Kenji from Osaka Japan
I was just browsing through the comments and see a lot of talk about the Mayor, Mr. Paul Natale. There are both positive and negative things said about him. This can only mean one thing and one thing only. The guy is doing his job perfectly!
A resident that is older then most of you on here. Commerce City, Colorado.
just saw the fireworks video. GREAT JOB TONY and CREW!
I dont know who his Tony guy is, but man can you put on a show! Very nicely done Commerce City.
Resident of the Newlands on Commerce City
I really like the fireworks display, I was not to crazy about the video and pictures that the Rapids crew had on their big display in the stadium. It really did not match and really had nothing to do with the fourth of July at all. At least most of it did not have anything to do with the fourth of July.
LOVED the Fireworks, but HATED the music.
fireworks were great and Rapids beat New York 4 to 0. All in all a very good night. Good job Commerce City staff.
Thank you to Tony and the rest of the parks and recreation staff for a job well done. I don't know any other city that can actually put on their own fireworks show. Once again, good job guys
Video is very good. Fireworks were nicely demostrated. All done by the city staff? Very Impressive.
Fireworks were great. Message from Paul Natale was nice touch. Commerce City needs all the good events for image changing that we can get.
just saw the fireworks video, very nice! I was not able to make it to the display at the rapids stadium, so it was nice to see the finale.
I hope that on July 7th, which is the next city council meeting, someone tells city council how ridiculous their new so-called "weed law" is.
How come the city on Commerce City does not use the usual website address that most cities us. The typical city.co.us?
It is my understanding that the city does own the usual city website format and if you type it in, you will get the the same website.
Why is the new proposed weed ordinance "ridiculous"?
Because there is no way that any municipality can enforce such a silly law!
So I guess speed limits are stupid too. I was just listening to city council and just heard a group of citizens complaining about speeding in Commerce City.
I consider them completely different. No one is going to die by not pulling weeds. Speeding can kill and if we are not careful, one of our children is going to end up dead.
Project: Lets Pull Together
The weeds on our own beautiful new Quebec Parkway have taken over the natural prairie grasses! Let's take this opportunity to "pull together", and do something about it ASAP! Will you join us in pulling the weeds on Quebec? Let's stop measuring weeds, and let's pull together to get rid of our weed problem and let everyone know we've got unity in our community! We'll be there will you? Call 720-250-2627 for more information.
Just saw the fireworks video from the gateway news. A very very good. They are taking news delivery to the next level. Impressive.
xzebvTo those who think any type of weed ordinance is silly. May you have a self centered neighbor like I have lived next to, who doesn't care how tall his weeds grow. How much it affects my yard or home values or how trashy it makes our block.
Almost every law is written for the few that must be forced to use common sense and consideration for the whole.
Many are not easy to enforce, but by having them we have something to regulate by.
Who’s pushing the weed agenda?? I’m sure most of us think it’s rude to let weeds grow on your property that long without being addressed. The city SHOULD be harsh in their enforcement of the weed ordinance. They should fine you each day until you get rid of them. Have some pride in the property you own or rent.
I agree with the last comment and I think the key word is rent. I think there are too many absentee land lords that dont care about their rentals and just let them run down. I would like the city to take charge and make them keep up their properties. Some of the properties in Commerce City are just down right shameful.
Just the word on the street, but I think there was a petition pulled to recall Mr. Paul Natale.
Yes there are numerous properties that do look shameful, but all in all I really do think the city looks better then it has in the past three years. And yes some of those shameful properties are in the New Northern Range.
As far as the Paul Natale recall, yes I have heard the same thing. I don't see how they are going to convince citizens to recall him, whathas he done that needs action as a recall.
Citizen on the Northern Range
I just got back from talking to a person from Thorton and we got the the whole name of the city thing. At the end of the conversation, I was asking myself, why would anyone name this area Commerce City. I think I have come to the conclusion that it was a self serving purpose to those who started the city in the first place. Does anyone agree with me?
I have been reading most of the comments here and there really is a nice spread of opinions. I for sure thought this would be all pro north and pro reba and paul. Thanks everyone for the nice surprise. This is my first comment but plan on leaving more.
What has The mayor Paul Natale done? Well lets first start by how he got elected. Only the North part elected him into office. It was not the choice the city as a whole and that is just the beginning. I have other reasons why which I will get into later.
You have to be joking! That is what a democracy is all about! If a certain area does get out and vote then as the great band RUSH says, you have still made a choice! People are ridiculous!
I also heard about a recall being started and good on race track rene is involved.Sounds to me like a bunch of sour grapes.
There used to be intellegence used when it came to recalls. They were used for breaking laws. Not popularity contests. I have seen this city in action. Your my friend, oops now your not. I like you, now I don't. Some of them including our representatives act like High School students, no I take that back, Jr High students.
As far as Natale's votes. He got a lot from the north, but he also got a good number from the south. If you don't like a politition, for crying out loud don't vote for them!!
Would it not it be true to say, every mayor we elect will have the majority vote from the north? The southern areas are decreasing in individuals that are eligible to vote and the northern areas are rapidly expanding. What matters is who received the most votes and not where they were cast. Would you feel more at ease if people living in the north drove to the older area to cast their vote? The outcome will always be the same. Since taking leadership Paul Natale is doing a great job for the entire city. If you are unhappy with the particular area in which you live your city council person is where the disgust should be directed. ….my opinion as a tax paying, voter registered property owner….
I happen to agree with the last comment, further more, why is only the mayor being singled out here. What about the rest of the council, or even better yet what about the city manager. Paul is only one vote. What the hell did he do that was so bad?
I thought that the initial recall was going to be Paul, Reba, Jason and Tony, why all of a sudden a change to only targeting Paul?
I have a problem with the lets pull together announcement. I think that it takes a dig at the gene leffel group (the carz group) club. The reason why I think this is because it makes the comment, lets stop measuring and start pulling. Anyone else agree with me?
What has Paul Done? Well for one he hired that new City Manager! ANd look what a great smack up job he has done. Our budget is going backwards, we have a bunch of newly annexed citizens that are all up in arms. He is the mayor and is suppose to be leading us forward! Dont get me started on the citys consultants!
I have to say, on the outside the city really looks pretty good. The council get into minor scuffles, but that is to be expected. Why is there all this talk about a recall?
I got a call about this comment section just today and was told that I should check it out. So here I am, First, I am shocked that the Gateway News would have such a section! Who knew that they had it in them to allow anyone say anything they wanted. I am a regular reader of the Commerce City Beacon and have been for many years. But the Gateway News, who is much much younger then the established Commerce City Beacon has gained a new respect from me. One thing is for sure and I can not believe I am going to say this, but the videos are really a out of this world experience. I have actually read articles in the Beacon and then listen to the video and get a completely different perspective. Guess I will have to read both papers and then watch the videos for the truth.
Long Time Commerce City Resident
WOW! Someone else knows about the infamous consulting debate. Well, not to give too much away, I will just say two names. Mathis and Danielson. Go on crazy people, go do your homework and report back! by the way, great job on the fireworks video, gate way news.
I am not sure if I amdoing this correctly. But I am so impressed with the firework video that the Gateway News has on its website. I did not know this website was on the internet until my kids showed me. I plan on coming here much more often from now on.
Patty Gilpin, Commerce City
I LOVE THE FIREWORKS VIDEO!!!
Gee Mayor Natale has a lot of power!!
He hired the city manager-guess no one else got to vote. (I heard it was unanimous) Flannery should have been able to turn the entire city problems around in one year, with the mess he was left with drunk Vandeventer and the crooked old council.
Consultants? No doubt too much money has been spent in the last few years. I do believe they should be looked at case by case, not all are a bad deal. Lets not throw the baby out with the bath water because of a few STUPID rumor mongers!
Hot Rumor! over heard two people, talking about city council maybe taking a second look at the current Pit Bull law that is is Commerce City. Law is setup now to ban all new Pit Bulls, but had about 20 to 30 grandfathered in.
I seriuosly doubt it, but only time will tell.
I sure hope pit bulls are not allowed into the proposed new dog park. Most of my experiences with that breed at other parks have not been positive. The dogs had obviously been raised/trained to be a "tough" dog and the owners were just uncouth. Spoke to and treated the dogs harshly. (You can bet they’re not insured) Every now and then there's a group at the park in Brighton. Most people now just leave when they come. I’ve seen a few that were sweet family pets but the breed has those crushing jaws that makes me feel too uncomfortable around them.
People quit being so nice about Pit Bulls, they are damn mean dogs when they wan to be.
Dont think that pit bull rumor is actually a rumor. I know that city council will be visiting the pit bull ban in Commerce City. It is just a matter of when.
Hate to sound like a broken record but it needs to be said loud and clear: IT IS NOT THE BREED, IT IS THE OWNERS!
So I guess that means that we have to trust the owners to be good people. I don't know about you, but that is a lot to ask for, especially when we are talking about children being a potential victim.
When city council did the ban a couple years ago, the majority of the people that were protesting were not even from Commerce City. They were the BSL movement that really started when Denver did their ban.
I think that when Denver did its ban, the effect was that a bunch of the Pit Bull owners started to move to the Commerce City and Brighton areas. These area became dumping grounds for the Denver Pit Bulls.
Why is it always Pit Bulls that get the media attention. I heard that the worse attack on a child that was recorded was actually a Sharpie.
Today Pit Bull Tomorrow it will be rots or doberman or labs. If the city wants a dog law, maybe it should just be a generic vicious dog law.
Voters, we all must make contact with our city council person to let them know how we feel. NO PIT BULLS IN COMMERCE CITY! Let them move back to Denver.
Pit BULLS!? I know a cat that should be banned that lives in the northern range.
Love the comments here. I have a good one. The city has refurnished its top staff with a ton of people that all cost a whole bunch of green to keep on. I take that as these new top shelf employees should have the skills to handle any kind of situation that is presented to them. SO here is the question-Why do we even need outside consultants? Why can't these new top "talented" HIGHLY paid employees or "cream of the crop" indivduals handle the city situations? I am not talking about city engineering issues, I am talking PR, ED and issues like that. By the way I have done some reseach on the 2 names that were given as possible Commerce City Consultant and I need to verify some info. BUT, it is unreal. Will post again when I have more concrete information
Once again I got a call that I should see this comment page. At first, I thought it was just someone trying to start trouble. But, I made a couple of phone calls to some people that I can really trust and there really might be something to this rumor of the current city council taking another look at the pit bull ban in Commerce City, Colorado. Looks like I will be paying more attention to this page after all.
Just saw the video on recycling in Commerce City. First I want to say thank you to the Commerce City Gateway News for letting me here the word directly from the recycling movement. I want to state that we and I mean ALL of the citizens need to back up this movement with everything we can. The time as come when we have to start doing the right thing for the enviroment.
Resident of Commerce City (The Newly Developed Area in the North part of town)
I AM SO GLAD THE CITY COUNCIL IS TAKING ANOTHER LOOK AT THEIR STUPID BSL RULE!!!!
Help stop BSL! Breed-specific legislation (BSL) is designed to place restrictions on ownership of certain breeds of dogs. Typically, the restricted breeds include pit bull-type dogs (usually vaguely defined), followed by Rottweilers. Other breeds may include German Shepherds, Chow Chows, Presa Canarios, Dobermans, Cane Corsos, Huskies, Boxers, and mixes of these.
City Council Please Reconsider your current Pit Bull Ban. The media and the inexperienced would have you believe that these breeds are vicious and should be prohibited. However, these very breeds as a whole have proven their stability and good canine citizenry by becoming Search & Rescue dogs, Therapy dogs working inside hospitals, professional Herding dogs and family companions for years.
Proud Dog Owner and resposible citizen
To the City Council of Commerce City. I suggest you contact the American Kennel Club in New York and ask for their draft version of a dangerous dog law. This law has been enacted in several states and provides the general populace ample protection from dangerous dogs while still permitting the people who properly train and socialize their pets to retain them.
I know this is not the popular thing to say here, but I am actually in agreement with the current Pit Bull Ban that is in effect in Commerce City. I have 2 small children and I do not trust anyone to control this dog that is basically train to attack and win at all costs. Everyone blames the media, but if it did not happen so often, we would not hear about it so much. Unless the news media is making these dogs attack, which I hope is not true!
All dogs are dangerous under certain circumstances. Only when the owner or custodian of the animal does not properly train and confine his/her animal, does that animal pose a potential risk to human safety. A common ingredient to the dog personality is to guard and protect its owner and property. ANY dog with that personality can become a problem for the public, if that dog is allowed to run loose and is not responsibly supervised. The key word here is responsibility (Websters definition of responsibility: "Being legally or ethically accountable for the welfare or care of another."). To say certain breeds of dogs are dangerous is not a complete statement. All dogs can be dangerous if in the hands of an irresponsible owner.
To the elected City official of Commerce City: The plain fact is that there is no relationship between the type of the dog and the number of incidents. If your town has 100 German Shepherds and 1 Poodle, you'll soon learn that the German Shepherds are responsible for 100 times as many incidents as the Poodles. Does this mean that German Shepherds are intrinsically vicious? Of course not. Please let the rumor be true and review your current Pit Bull Ban in your great city.
If the rumor is true or not I want the city council to take another look at the current City-Wide ban of Pit Bulls in Commerce City. I find it horrifying when a person is maimed or killed by a dog, especially when the person is a child. However we rationalize our reaction to the incident, we must remain rational enough to place the responsibility for the tragedy directly on the people involved, not on the animal itself. The circumstances that make a dog bite a person vary with the situation, training, and/or environment which the dog encounters or lives in. This stark fact remains: all breeds and varieties of dogs can, will, and do bite.
Everyone wants to blame the media for the unfair coverage of Pit Bull attacks.
Here is a thought, No attacks, No Coverage. Commerce City, keep your ban is place and strengthen your vicious dog laws.
Irresponsible owners should be targeted, not a breed. Negligent owners already violate many dog laws, so enacting BSL would likely not faze them. However, responsible owners who are diligent in their duties - and whose dogs are good canine citizens - will bear the brunt of further restrictive legislation. The goal should be to enforce laws and increase penalties for violators (something that is undeniably currently not being done, or else animal control departments would not be so overwhelmed). BSL will simply add to the burden that responsible owners, shelters, and animal control officers must bear.
It has been reported that of the 32 fatal dog attacks in the United States during 2007, literally half of the named breeds were pit bulls. Nine of the victims were children ages 2 to 11. Five of the victims were elderly, ages 59 and older, including 90-year-old Celestino Rangel from San Antonio, Texas, who was killed by two pit bulls that had broken into his home and attacked him.
These are not examples of these dogs being "singled out," but the hard truth that they are dangerous animals. No other breed attacks adults nearly as often as they attack children, which pit bulls do. The breed also attacks without warning, and often without provocation.
Combine the number of attacks with their enormous jaw strength, which the dogs developed over years of selective breeding, and their "lock and shake" trait, which causes severe bone and muscle injury, pit bull owners have a very real ticking time bomb in their homes.
Why take that chance? Why do people choose to put themselves, their children and their community members at risk?
I just watched the Recycling Video "movement" on the Gatewaynews.org website. First, I do not want to pay anymore money as far as taxes for a city wide recycling program. These days, with everything sky rocketing, I do not need another expense to worry about. It will cost the city more money to start a city-wide recycling program. If anyone does not trust me, then do you own homework and report back. If you want to start a recycling movement, go to your neighbors and collect and take all your recycling materials down to the HWY 2 recycling center. Don't force it on me, especially when it is going to cost me money out of my pocket.
I wanted to say Thank You to Dustin McIntyre, he is the indivdual that provides us with all the videos that I have personally learned actually more then I wanted to know about this great city I live in. Please keep up the good work and keep us informed!
You got to LOVE the tree huggers! I am glad that they have a ton of left over money in their bank accounts to pay for a city-wide recycling program. Which I guarentee will cost the city. What, did everyone forget that a city-wide recycling program is going to take a raher large effort to collect and "recycle". And last I saw gas slightly higher then it has been in recent history. So a message to all the tree huggers: Organize and start programs in your own neighborhoods and leave and my wallet out of it.
I seriously can't get over how cool the fireworks video is! I also Love the BMX riders at Pioneer Park! Please more cool videos and less Politcal Videos!
I am too all for recycling, but at this point in time I do not think that we need a city wide program that will cost the citizen more money. Made in 2009 when and I am being hopeful here things start looking up.
I have done some research on my own and yes there might be some concern within the boys and girls club organization on the Commerce City effort of bring a club via a 8% seat tax. I really think that the group that started this effort should have really been in touch with the boys and girls club in the first place. Sounds like amateur night to me.
I know that it has been said before, but I just wanted to say what a great job the city staff did on the fireworks at the rapids stadium. I look forward to next year!
Raising a Family in the North part of Commerce City
I am reading the comments that were left on page and I really am impressed at the content left here. Some of you guys really have an inside track on a lot of the issues discussed. Just to verify a couple of things. First, yes I have also heard that the current city council was going to re-visit the Pit Bull ban that is in place in Commerce City and yes, there is some concern that the boys and girls club is being in a way used in the context of a seat tax that is strongly opposed by kronke sports. Lastly, I seriously doubt that the city will start a curb side recycling and it is not because they are against recycling, it comes down to basic economics AKA there is no damn money. Keep the comments coming and I will keep verifying. SO FAR SO GOOD.
Just read in the paper that there is another Investigation of contaminated soil at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Why did the school district allow the high school to be placed out there! I think it was one of the most dumbest decisions ever.
The last comment is true. This is from the press release= An area of odorous and stained soil with fragments of clay pipe was found while constructing the Basin F cover. Crews were prepared to handle this discovery. The area does not pose a risk to the public, was covered with six inches of clean soil and no offsite odors were detected. The U.S. Army, Shell Oil Co., U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Tri-County Health Department and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are investigating the nature and extent of the contamination, and are developing a path forward.
I can understand the concern about the High School, but with every agency that is keeping an eye on the arsenal, I seriously think that we will all be okay. I think a lot of individuals want to make the arsenal a bigger issue then what it is. Yes there is bad things out there, but I am confident that our agencies will make sure that we are safe.
FYI: the areas that still have possible contamination are the areas that will remain in the Federal Government closed control area. They will never be opened to the public.
The final cleaning is what is bringing these to the for front, which is exactly what they are to do.
The area the high school is in as well as the stadium and city hall, never were in the area the soil was dirty.
Has anyone heard any news about what’s going on in Reunion: Specifically the area on 104th, east of Tower? I thought I read that a Wal-Mart was coming this fall? Fat chance! I would have thought this would be the perfect time for a large box grocery store to open in the northern area. I’m tired of driving to the surrounding cities to shop and am sure many are. I realize the economy is down but there’s still money to be made especially since construction materials and concrete are cheaper.
Money to be made by groceries?
New money or the same?
Meaning you have to shop at a grocery now. They don't really care if you have to drive, they still get your money.
When there is competition and risk of losing customers at their stores in Brighton and Thornton etc.to someone else, say Walmart, then they will build.
Seat Tax Comment: Fine pass the seat tax and get your 7 million dollars from kronke, then build your building and then WHAT?! You need a bunch of money to run the thing and you have already pissed off the guy that could have helped you in the long run. What the hell were you guys thinking. I completely agree with the comment posted a while ago! It was for sure Amateur Night! Nice Job Seat Tax Committee!
It was just stated last night that the Starbucks in the northern range is on track to being one of the most successful in the area. So why can't the city get some kind of large box grocery store? Is there not enough demand or is it the roof top thing again. I have to agree with the individual that said that they were tired of driving umteen miles just to get my groceries.
Yea! The city should MAKE a grocery come in! They should force a company like Kings or Safeway and tell them they have too build or else!
When the developers are bending over backwards and the city is offering great incentives, it then is up to the grocery companies to make that leap.
When they think they will lose our business at other locations, then they will come!
I just did a internet search of consultant Bill Mathis and Associates.
The information I found, was that many cities have used this company and had recommended them as highly effective and positive in helping cities gain their direction.
I am confused as to the earlier blogger, infering that they were negative or subversive in nature, had some terrible "hidden background" or agenda.
It appears this is a case of; if you say something negative, enough people might believe it rather than find out the truth for themselves.
I think that we all in the north should ban together and start a boycott of the grocery stores in the surrounding area until they build closer to us. Well, at least wish we could, but I get hungry really fast. Oh well, I guess it is back to be patient, AGAIN!
Baseball stadium in the North? and we get a recreation center to boot? why not? it could bring us a kings or Safeway or maybe even make Walmart build sooner.
For some reason the old guard thinks we should be happy to drive way down south to the rec center, library….I believe that if the city approved a new rec center and library in the north there will be up in arms. That’s an area where we need to push city council to do something. Who is making location choices ie…dog park, baseball field.? Those locations are horrible. There’s more thought in pleasing the old area instead the residents of the north who’s generating all the tax revenue. Gosh, will we ever move forward.
The tax revenue is not generated by homes. The amount of money the city receives from homes does not even pay for the trash removal the city provides. The tax revenue is generated by business and industry. The oil refinery is a major contributor.
As far as the baseball field that is being pushed by a developer who wants their land used for that purpose. The city doesn't own land and must use the few pieces it has for the best use.
Some of the south may not "appreciate" the north and as a northern person I too would love a rec center, but purchasing land is expensive. Contrary to popular belief the city cannot take land or demand what is put there, there is something called use by right. As voters we can contact the powers that be and tell them what we'd like, but financing that is another story, unless you want to pay more taxes!
I would love to see a one time 100.00 investment from the home owners in the north. Five thousand homes = 500K. We could form some sort of consortium to purchase land and build something like a bowling alley with an adjoining outdoor ice skating rink. With a good bar and concession area this could generate decent returns and entice further development. What does everyone think?
Did anyone see a recall petition was started in the south? Clearly there's a bit of serious political jealousy taking place with bullock. I can’t believe that guy is still so bitter about losing the election. This is a slap in the face to the citizens of the city who vote in elections.
You know the $100 investment might be that bad of an idea. At least you are thinking outside the box. I live in Reunion I would be willing to give that a shot. What does anyone else think?
Well, I think that we in the North are going to be having a lot to think about for November. Like life is not hard enough these days. I think the Baseball Stadium maybe a little too risky for my taste and besides nothing is going to come to us for free. Don't we need to still build a bunch of schools still?
Wait, Why do we have to come up with "investment" money to bring some kind of revenue producing venture in the north? Isn't that the city's job. Damn, we have to pull our own weeds on Quebec, and now bring in our own economic development? Why are we standing for this?
Baseball Propsal is going to bat a lot of these residents right out of town.
About the comment of $100. I would do that in a second. I think it is a great idea. Shoot, $100 is nothing, I spend that in gas in a week.
The $100 is a great starting point idea. I'm personally afraid that won't be a drop in the bucket for what land alone costs up here.
I have heard that the developers want SO much money that it is hard to cover the price of rent on the places that are planned.
Recall Commerce City mayor Paul Natale! Mr. Natale has been irresponsible with the tax payers money, and dose not treat all the residents equally, he has also violated the City Charter. Join us in the effort to recall Mr. Natale. Sign the petition starting July 18, this Friday by calling 303-287-6747 and talk to either Rene or Debra.
rene, you lost the election; You are unhappy that your political career has gone nowhere. Why are you wasting our council’s time? The people do not support your recall. What is this? The forth time you tried this. We must remember this in future elections. The people of Commerce City did not and will not choose you as our representation. The City has grown immensely since Paul Natale took office. The city's image has vastly improved. The people are happy.
Rene, you were 3RD not even 2nd not even close. Your lies don't cut it for anyone but a few who don't look into the truth.
The city has grown past your way of doing things your history says it all!
The recall reasons sound very vague. I wish they would come back with specific issues. At least elaborate.
I agree I think Mr. Busby was the second olace winner in the last election. Can anyone verify?
I was reading some of the last comments. I really like the idea of the lets all chip in $100 and invest it. Not that I think it is a good idea, but because it shows that the residents in the north are really positive people. When the going gets tough, instead of whinning and crying, they actually come up with some ideas. Just a thought. Well, I am proud of you guys up there. Dont worry 104th will be done someday soon
MAN! A recall with no really good excuse. And here I was getting all excited that our Mayor was caught up in some juicy shit. It turns out it is just some dude that has a personal grudge. I have an Idea, the dude with the grudge, go and create a dart board with the mayors face on it, put it down in your basement and whenever you have a hate urge, go down and start whipping darts at it. Then you dont have to waste all of our time. I will NOT sign any damn recall list!
I am new to Commerce City. I really only get my news from this website, I really do not like the paper and ink of traditional newspapers. I really want the gatewaynews.org to interview the recall effort to see where they are coming from, maybe they know something that we dont know. But I will not sign a recall effort without some kind of solid evidence that someone did something wrong.
This is hilarious! Debra Bullock was at King Soopers just 3 years ago try to stop a recall because it would cost a lot of money, now I bet she will be at king soopers trying to start a recall. What a joke!
You really have to know the issues to understand why the recall effort is even being talked about. The city is not in good shape! We have virtually no new economic development, they have fired everyone, ED director is gone. The city staff has increased by leaps and bounds. I think that we shouldd at least hear what the recall committee has to say.
Some numbers of our great city: From the year 2006 to the year 2007 total revenues are down by $11,205,083! and it gets better, total expenses are up $9,814,671! We are still in the positive as far as revenue over expenses by about almost 12 million, but that is a long way from where we were in 2006 when revenues over expenses were almost 33 million. Why the huge jumps? bad decisions? bad economy? High gas? Global warming? What is it?
Well from my memory the mayor was elected in April 07. So that doesn't explain the drop in any revenues being his fault. It very possibly has to do with the building being down so much and the economy slowing as a whole. The espenses going up related the same.
I would love proof about the staff numbers being so elevated and how the mayor is responsible by himself for all of these things. We have a council of nine and last time I looked they all have an equal vote.
Just saying these things and pointing fingers doesn't make is true.
Usually shortages in finances (if these are real) are caused by previous misspending. Which meant the council before was at least partially responsible.
I think we’re just seeing the cost’s of cleaning up from the last administration. Poor project planning, misleading bookkeeping, and overall city management. Had so much corruption then. City manager with a possible alcohol addiction. Law enforcement fixing tickets and protecting those in their good ole boy system from criminal prosecutions. Hiring people with the only qualification being friendship or bloodline. Now things are getting done and the city’s future looks great. We’ve had so many new residents moving in wanting to raise children here. As the overall economy improves more and more companies will move in. I wonder how many companies we lost due to the past administration.
It's really a good laugh that Rene and his wife want to say the mayor is misspending the city's money.
I was fairly new to the city when Byran Moss did his investigation on Commerce City. I remember Rene being involved with extra trip expenses. Someone should look that up.
I remember that! I think it was drinks in Hawaii for the past City Manager. Of course he is no longer with the city because of some personal issues, like hitting cars under the influence.
Paul is but one vote, why are not all of the city council being recalled? They are all involved with the dollars of the city. This recall is really a downer. We need to start concentrating on moving forward. Lets get some business here.
The lack of the city revenue can really linked to the basic overall economy. The city is heavily reliant on sales and use taxes to support governmental operations. The sucess of local businesses have a major impact on the Citys revenue streams.
For the individual that wanted to verify the mayor totals, they are as follows: Natale was 1037, Busby was 879, Bullock was 822 and last but not least was Toavs with 126. So, yes Rene did come in third.
Sales tax revenue decreased in 2007 approximately 4.8 million dollars that is a 13.6% decrease. Decrease in consumer buying within the Citys limits is the reason for blame for this.
lets not all forget too the residential construction dropped off big time in 2007 for Commerce City. In 2006 there were 819 housing permits and in 2007 there were only 469! Why? well, no ED, city image is not a wonderful thing. Just another FYI, it stated in the recent past at a lunch I attended that all of the Commerce City Parade of Homes are vacant. Which I do think is true, I took a drive up there and everyone but one had for sale sign attached to them, oh and yeah, the yards all look like shit, except for one.
Concerned Citizen of the South
To the person who left the comment about the Consultants that the city has hired for whatever reason, you have to do more research then just going to the actual consultants own website. Those who so their homework will win any debate! I will be reporting on my findings when I can verify. I will also be submitting my findings to all three of our local papers.
So again the same question. Didn't the whole council vote on the consultants, and was this awful information given to them by anyone before the vote or even now?
It's so easy to make decisions from the quarter back sofa vs really be in in the game.
I was the one who did the research on the consultants. I did not go to their website, but to others who had used them.
No doubt anyone can find something negative about another if they did deep. I could probably find negative things about you if I tried.
In other words hints and rumors aren't enough, you even admitted you haven't verified anything.
Why do some people try so hard to keep our city in an ugly image.
Let's build it rather than tear it down.
Business won't ever want to come here with people who always make us ugly!
It’s very clear that this is some sort of personal vendetta this rene person has against the mayor at the costs of the city. Someone mentioned he’s done this 3 – 4 times in the past? Can the city go after that guy financially for abusing the system? I guess he’s having a hard time moving on.
Rumors, innuendoes, gossip, false accusations…
I wonder how people can sleep at night.

2 You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice.
I love the bible guy! Anytime you can quote a book that has that much corruption in it, you should always do so. But I will still not sign a recall list until I hear some real evidence of the mayor doing something wrong.
I have a question, if the city recently lost thier director of economic development, who is in charge of ED? No wonder we have nothing going on in the city.
Concerned Citizen who is sick of eating at sonic and subway (but still does LOVE the $5.00 foot long deal)
A simple Hiekue
Racing Rene Starts a Recall of Paul.
Successful will it BE?
Need some real reasons and we will SEE?
The effort will be hard and long.
At the end will we all need bongs.
South Lawn in the House!!!
LMAO, now pass that bong...
I was really interested in where people are getting all these facts and figures from. So I called a city council member and spent about an hour just talking. It turns out that pretty much all the figues on this comment page are surprisingly accurate. At least people are checking their information before posting. That is a big relief for me. I do not want to be leaving comments about facts and figures that are not accurate. Thank you to all and keep up the good work.
Citizen and Verifier of Stats and Information
I LOVE THE hiekue guy PLEASE POST MORE!
Correct figures are certainly important, but we must remember that statistics can be made to read how ever they want.
Watch any political campaign to see how the numbers can be manuvered to try and blame someone or elevate someone. In either case they have not had anything to do with it.
I say more hiekue!
To clarify; this passage was for those MAKING the false accusations about the mayor.
Rumors, innuendoes, gossip, false accusations…

Lets start saving tax dollars. I would really like to know how much money is being spent printing everything in spanish. This is an english speaking country and I don't want my tax dollars spent on it. The format makes everything unreadable and it goes right in the trash. That's a waste of money.
It maybe a English speaking Country, but you live in a Spanish Speaking City. Go to Derby and try to buy a Coke! It is what it is. Besides and correct me if I am wrong, English is not the official language of Commerce City or should I say Commerico el Cuidad.
I Love the Take it to the Track Program that the law enforcement in involoved in. Brighton and Adams County and it looks like Denver and Lakewood and Jefferson County all endorse it. How come Commrce City does not?
SO today is Friday, July 18th. Has anyone seen Rene and group out and about?
According to the State of the City of Commerce City, King Soopers Colorado Real estate group plans to develop a new store at the NW corner of 104th Ave and Chambers Road. The 125,000 square ft. store will modeled after a market place, the companies largest store. No Dates are set for sure.
There never are firm dates. with the economy and the lack of residential, what are we paying for this new King Soopers? I heard King Soopers demanded $5,000,000 up front to bring a store here. How long before Commerce City would make that back in sales tax?
SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!!!
CAGE MATCH AT REC CENTER
Jim "the law dog" Benson versus Jason "can you hear me know" McEldowney! You'll pay for the whole seat but only use the edge! But if the seat tax becomes a reality then you will have to pay for the whole seat at least as for as the tax part.
*this is not a real event so please dont show up at the rec center.
Is Kings really coming to 104th and Chambers? My God, maybe they were reading this blog!
Just talked to the high ups. Kings Soopers is a good possiblity but the details still need to be worked out. No dates have been set. But it does look very good for all of us in the North. Good reason to celebrate.
Maybe the Reunion area should ask Brighton to annex them in.
KING SOOPERS AT 104th and Chambers. DAMN! Call off the RECALL!
Brighton Annex Reunion? Only in a perfect world.
It seems a little coincidental like 2 recalls back. Anyone else remember the phantom Safeway and Walmart stories that came out around the last recall and the last election? 104th Avenue was supposed to give us Safeway in a year. Walmart was a 'sure thing' for the last election.
No sign of Rene at least in the Northern Area I don't know about the Core City. I am sure we will see a bunch of them this weekend. I don't think I will sign it, but I do want to hear them out.
Reunion is split now too! We have Core Reunion and South Lawn (New Comers) Jim vs. Jason, issue seat tax. I think I will support Jason, as long as he does say the word "kudos" anymore!
I like the idea of take it to the track. I have noticed a lot of the younger adults racing their motorcycles on Toewer Road. I think Commerce City should endorse this program.
