The lack of ED is due to a number of reasons. First there was not enough occupied homes to attract ED without incentives. Second, 104th was not done. Third, the city was still trying to decide on land use codes. Add onto that the inconsistencies with the water policy and avaialibility and not knowing what council would or would not approve. The city is on their 3rd or 4th market study and have not followed the recommendations yet. Each item by itself may not be a 'show stopper' but add in all the council infighting and public fighting, name change possibilities, recall efforts, looking at being business unfriendly with the negative and very public NASCAR vote, forced annexation lawsuit, and the negative press that this city generates, along with an image issue (which is hopefully changing) and there is no ED. It has been several councils, including this one, that can share the blame.

Citizens Beware!

I was told face to face from a citizen that was running for office last city electing that the biggest news was going to be that the city of Brighton was not going to be able to provide water to the Adams Crossing Project, and South Adams would have to thus the IGA would take effect and that whole area would have to be de-annexed from Brighton and annexed into Commerce City.

Needless to say, none of this happened. Brighton was able to get the water and Adams Crossing is and will always be in the City of Brighton.

This individual seemed so sure this was going to be Commerce City’s deal he almost had me convinced.

It just goes to show, you really have to be careful of who you listen too.

Wesley, Commerce City

ps this individual is not currently on city council

Council not voting on this gun issue is just purely stupid.

I will never feel safe at council meetings.

You will not see me there ever!

Is the leakage of $300,000,000 a total amount or an annual amount? Thanks

Anonymous said...

Are the council norms going to be available to the public?

Can the leakage data be made available to the public?

Gateway News said...

Yes the leakage is annually, I have changed the articles on the pages to reflect this.

Thank you for the clarification.

I not only find rumors stupid, but vicious.
I can't help but wonder about the person who spred's them. Do they have no moral compass?
If they believe themselves to be of any major faith, I find it hard to believe that follows the teaching of their faith.
I have been on the receiving end of lies....it is not fun, but it taught me a lot about the person telling it.

Anonymous said...

** News flash, the chief eating a candy bar in council chambers!!**

.....Now for the REST of the story!
The person complaining about it, used to eat chips etc.in the back area of the council room, along with "friends". They would leave a mess of crumbs till the guard got tired of it and would not let it continue!
That's the REST of the story!

Travis said...

I understand the leaky ED concept, but isn't the money just leaking back into the companies own bank account. Why would King Soopers care if you shop in Denver or Brighton or Commerce City? And why would Best Buy care either.

ED team is going to really have a challenge in front of them. They are going to have to really look outside the box.

Travis

Anonymous said...

It figures it only takes one person to ruin it for everyone.

Thanks ALOT "active citizens" in the back of the room!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Retail Leakage Report to the public needs to have the following:

Community Strengths & Weaknesses
Opportunities and Threats

Anonymous said...

I agree with your conclusion Travis. I think other retailers might find the leakage info useful, but grocers don't care how far we have to travel to shop.
The real change will be when another grocer comes to the area, yes even Walmart.
When the convience of a closer store out weighs us going to Kings/Safeway,(taking away some of their shoppers).... then, they will build.
Thus my main reason that I wish the Walmart would come soon!!

Fred Alister said...

Until Walmart comes, then King Soopers will jump on board.

Any news on Walmart?

Fred A.

Hyde said...

Life would be so much easier if we had a safeway or Kings right down the road. I know it does not mean much, but Shea sales person told me and my wife that we would have a grocery store 6 mos. after we moved in, that was 5 years ago.

I know their job is to sell, just sucks!

Hyde, Commerce City

Anonymous said...

Interesting NEWS!

You can carry a concealed gun in National Parks now!

Anonymous said...

Jason annouced on his twitter!

Anonymous said...

Hyde,
Shea probably thought there would be a grocery.
Promises by the big two grocers have been made over and over. Even a handshake deal with one (that stimulated the 104th widening).
They have been offered tons of deals, including one developer who offered to build the store!!
They (the grocers) don't care. It is of no matter to them we have to travel 6 to 8 miles to spend our money. They get our dollars no matter.
Walmart comes....so does either Kings or Safeway!!
I too am sick of the drive, but they have us in their control!

Middle Ground

Prairie View High School has been working very hard towards a "No Hate" Award for the high school. But, the school missed an opportunity to practice what they said they had achieved a non-judgemental unconditional acceptance of their entire school population. A "No Hate" standard of interaction between the students and the administration.

An April Fool's Edition of PVHS paper poked fun at teachers, aliens and immigration on current topics of interest to both the student body and the general public (Parents). Any written spoof will contain some truths and the rest will just be made up from the student's experience at the time they are writing and the age they are at the time of that writing. A teenager does not write with the maturity of an adult. That does not mean this it is meant as mean spirited.

PVHS missed an opportunity to mediate the differences between how students view each other and find that middle ground that each can agree on. The administration took a completely one-sided approach which misses the meaning of mediation and tolerance towards all parties or a "No Hate" attitude. The English Teacher should not have been made to resign; The student writers should not have been made to feel ashamed of their creative writing; A professional mediator should have been brought in to help students to understand each other's viewpoint and the reality of the world we live in today. That is what a "No Hate" atmosphere is all about.

Hey Gateway, I have a question for you, can you verify.
I heard that there is a state convention going on in the mountains this spring.
I heard that the entire council is going. That really disturbs me since 4 will be gone in the fall, and 3 are term limited.
Why are they going when they will no longer represent our city. Wasted dollars or vacation??
I thought we had changed!!

Anonymous said...

$200 million race track would feature a 1 mile oval speedway, a 4 mile road course and a karting facility.

It would seat between 65,000 and 100,000 fans.

The proposed site sits on 1,500 acres on the TransPort property east of Peña Boulevard.

Paper says this AM that Aurora hasn't even been approached about this track, according to Mayor Tauer.
No monies have been allocated for this as of yet. It is another pipe dream that may come true, that is all.
Core Comments, just because YOU believe it should have been in our city DOES NOT make it so. Many of us FOUGHT hard to make sure it wasn't by our homes. Just because it MIGHT bring in money doesn't mean it belongs in our city.
What....did they promise you a job too??, like racetrack Rene and Sean "little boy" Ford?

Derby Wins Award said...

The Derby neighborhood was a finalist in the Neighborhood of the Year award through the Neighborhoods USA organization. The 34th annual conference is being held this week in Spokane. Derby has won second place in the Best Neighborhood Program for physical revitalization!

Derby neighborhood resident, Robert Romine took the lead in assembling a presentation to NUSA that outlined the vast efforts of multiple organizations and individuals that have helped to launch the physical revitalization efforts in Derby . The broad-based community development activities that are present in Derby were well received by conference attendees from around the world.

Derby, Commerce City, and Colorado have been well represented this week by a small delegation of Commerce City residents and business men and women.

We should all be very proud of this award. It is an acknowledgement of our hard work, dedication and commitment to Derby . And, it also creates a positive milestone for us to work from. Derby is just getting warmed up.

Anonymous said...

Doesn't matter how much Mayor Tauer is in favor of this project. It is to cost 150 million, the state has 50 million a year for all projects.
The governor hasn't even approved the 50 million, because of concerns the state can come up with it.
Anyone believe Aurora can afford to fill in the rest!!
To me it sounds like wishful thinking and hopeful P.R.

State Conference talked about in earlier comment is:

87th Colorado Municipal League Annual Conference, June 16-19, 2009, in Vail

The Colorado Municipal League is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that has served and represented Colorado's cities and towns since 1923. Currently, 265 of Colorado's 271 municipalities (representing more than 99 percent of the state's population) are members of CML and benefit from our advocacy, information and training services.

CML's mission is twofold: to represent cities and towns collectively in matters before the state and federal government, and to provide a wide range of information services to assist municipal officials in managing their governments.

Report to Gateway News that not all the Commerce City counicl members will be attending this event held in Vail June 16-19.

That's a very good point; I hope we're not sending term limited council members on these trips.
You know you're from Commerce City when... This was the old Commerce City that members of the recall committee, carz club and a few others were comfortable with and trying to return us to. There were very few voters they had to appease. Throw a few crumbs at the illegals like looking the other way for housing, criminal activities and immigration violations. You should travel to the northern enclave which fortunately has never been subjected to the ideologies of the good ole boys. They will never have a say in how things are managed in the north

It is no more correct to lump everyone in a race or ethinic group as "one type" of people, than it is to say everyone in CC is this type.

Thornton is a 2 to 3 times larger in population.
