Should Commerce City Invest in a relationship with China for Economic Growth here?
Background: Chinese investors are pouring money into new construction, new factories, new businesses, and joint ventures. Chinese consumers are buying up goods like crazy. Retail sales are soaring. Loan growth at Chinese banks is still on fire. Now, even the rural areas of China are exploding higher with economic growth.
Common sense answer: yes
I can understand why some would want to recall Jim Benson, but we need to stop being so recall trigger happy here. Looking at the Angelou report, seriously at this point we need to concentrate on making our city better and not scaring anyone else off with a recall attempt.
I still believe that recalls should be last resort and used for such crimes as embezzlement or gross malfeasance.
Tim Dalton
I think it is funny that people are making predictions. The popular combo is leffel, serna,McEldowney,Hahn.
I find that hilarious.
All you who have not voted yet, you have until 7pm tues. Drop it off at the commerce city hall or other locations.
hey ccSpeaks,
you forgot, NO on 1A!
yes on 1a and yes on 2a, vote for mceldowney, trull, serna, and moreno so we are not humiliated in washington dc, in 27j vote for morales, kniss and krisman
someone educated from the north part of the city
adams county is reporting only fifteen percent of ballots have been returned, it is monday folks, the election is over tomorrow, PLEASE VOTE, take it down to city hall in commerce city or in brighton
NO MORE RECALLS IT IS OVER NO MORE RECALLS LETS ALL ACT LIKE ADULTS OR AT LEAST TRY OK
who is going to run for south adams county water and sanitation district board???? that election is coming up very soon in April 2010. we will never have any real growth in the north part of Commerce City until we get rid of the current corrupt board and turn the water board over to the City of Commerce City. News Flash City of Brighton owns and controls their own water so maybe that is the difference. Duh?????
Yes lets work with China. Maybe they have water!!!!!!!!
Commerce City attorney Bob Gehler just said that the city had won the lawsuit with Enclave West the S&M club in Commerce City. If we won that lawsuit, why is that club still open in Commerce City?
I am listening to City Council, Commerce City Attorney Bob Gehler is saying that the city needs the medical marijuana ordinance passed because he does not want the same situation that the city had with the sexually oriented businesses a few years back. City had to go to court then, are we just afraid to go back to court?
I think that the City of Commerce City should have more security outside city council chambers since some of the candidates are so volatile. After election everyone should be very cautious.
Reba Drotar left her last council meeting?! What the HELL!
Drotar really loves the city, she just said she wasn't going anywhere, she just left the council meeting?
Damn!
council norms!!!
Jim Benson should get the whole story first. If the pay raises are for the little guys. I say NO PROBLEM! Just goes to show how well off our city really is!
I don't have any issue with issue with staff getting raises, but council getting health insurance is a little odd, they still are part time, right?
Jim Benson is a handful, kinda feel sorry for the new guys coming on.
If any of the citizens had a issue with council getting health issues you had your chance to address it with council, about 2 weeks ago. You missed out!
everyone without medical insurance should run for city council in commerce city as the city is going to pay for insurance for council members, your tax dollars at work
No Walmart in Reunion anytime soon it sounds. City Manager said that there has been no news but they will lose incentives if they don't make decision in near future.
Reba should have left. Scott and Orval should get up and leave too. What a disgrace for the city council to allow the 4 members of council going off to say a few words in less than 15 minutes and then the Mayor says"If anyone would like to get up and make any comments you may do so and the rest of you can go to the back and get some food" Well 200 people getting food and people talking is totally disrespectful. Mayor Natale your actions speak louder than words and I just hope that all the people that you don't want on Council get elected so you can be put in your place. You are totally arrogant and rude and an embarassment for the city and a slap in the face for all the people who came out to pay their respects for the 3 people that have just spent 8 years of their life for the city which obviously you don't give a damn about. You should be ashamed. Maybe you should have thought this one out a little better.
Looking at the agenda, I thought that the first 20 or so minutes was to honor all of the outgoing council members, not a Reba Drotar reception.
I have known her a long time and for someone who pretends to be humble, she really loves the attention and limelight.
I am glad the time was limited (too bad Drotar took up most of it) or the meeting would never have started!
p.s. she used to talk soooo bad about the CARZ club, what a change.
I am shocked that Debra Bullock was unhappy with the mayor. Here I thought she would have supported him!!Ha Ha
Debra the other writer was correct. This wasn't suppose to be an on going meeting about those that have been on council.
It was a scheduled recognition for them. You are certainly welcome to hold a party for them yourself.
If Reba hadn't gone on and on others could have talked, she knew that amount of time that was set aside, but chose to continue to talk.
The other council members realized this is still a city meeting.
They were considerate of the citizens, not Ms Drotar!
The COUNCIL MEETING, had 20 min set aside to show thanks for the outgoing members.
Drotar used up 15min , the mayor extends the time to 45min.
There still was a meeting planned right?
I just thank God Reba didn't get started on the arsenal, or we would still be listening!
I bet the only ones upset by this time limit was the Drotar entourage.
Their friends and family can honor them as they wish.
Besides isn't this the first time something really special with food etc was planned for the out going members?? When is enough enough?
We need to vote for those who don’t mind us parking on our lawns. I can have junk cars and trash in front of my house because it’s my house. We don’t need those north people using them fancy big words because they went to college. We want Commerce City to stay as it was. We don’t care about improving our image we lived here for over 20 years.
LET’S PUT A STOP to this advancement crap and vote for Bullock, Lefel and Romine.
My house is still worth what I paid for it over 20 years ago so the good ole boys know what they’re doing.
Mr. Droll
whoever was in charge of the meeting was so disrespectful to the council members going off, they should have been given the courtesy of having citizens come up and give communication like any other council meeting.
I am glad Reba Drotar left in protest!
why would whoever planned the meeting last night have people talk during people eating.
So disrespectful!
If you all remember rightly,
The mayor said to have people go out of the chambers and talk. Not anyone's fault.
Wes
I want to wish all of the candidates GOOD LUCK today.
Good Luck to all the candidates,
May the best man OR women win.
less then an hour left, last chances to get out to the drop off locations and cast your ballot
In 6 months we're recalling bullock, can't believe people in the north didn't vote and the people in the south are so stupid.
Way to go candidates. Surprising!
Serna gets 11% wonder what the 2 eds think about that
poor gene, he had 4 years to campaign, congratulations Dominick
who is Jadie Carson. very Interesting.
so Romine got over 700 votes, that is just about how many signs he had
Rene and Paul, gateway get camera ready
weird combo!
maybe pocs lost because he doesn't believe henderson didn't exsist
FUNNY STUFF
WOW! Great Stuff Gateway Thanks for the Breaking News
what a strange turnout! good job Gateway.
RENE!!!!!! WON!!!!! Got First!!!!!!
WOWOWOWOWOWOW
take that Mister Eds!
Dusty
get you video equipment ready
one at large from the north and one at large from the south
I am pretty happy
low turnout, typical c town
Congrats to all the winners,
and thanks for the race, to all of us allso rans.
Thanks to all those who took the time to Vote.
Now lets all get behind our Council and keep CC moving ahead.
Mac
Those are some good looking babies MAYOR!
I want to know what people were thinking when they voted. I respect the vote, but just was wondering if people would be willing to share what they were thinking.
I think entire city is surprised by vote. May need some time for people to really take it in.
I will be honest. for at large I wanted balace. We had how many candidates running out of Reunion. Need balance and now we got it
I voted the way I did purely because I did not want all the at large positions filled by people from the north.
I was thinking people voted the way they did to send a message to the mayor. Why else would people vote for the person that wanted to badly recall him?
Karen Long says people werent aware of election. I find that hard to believe when we all got our ballots in the mail and I think I saw a couple political signs out there!
rene bullock will bring balance to this council.
I vote for Mr. Serna, not because Ed Casso told me to, but because he was and is the best guy for the job.
I guess I am in the minority.
Rene will keep Paul on his toes.
So is it the idea now that it will be a tag team effort from Jim and Rene to attack Paul?
mayor is in for a couple of tough years ahead.
I Hope New Council can focus on the issues at hand and not get personal. ED should be number 1 on the agenda
I would even go as far as requiring weekly updates on the CC ED situation
Curious how Rene is going to handle the consultants that were already approved and working on current projects like Angelou. Then again, a LOT of good information did come out of the Angelou study at the end.
I voted for Guillermo because the 2 eds told me too! I guess I should have listened to the voice in my head
Rene will balacne out the mayor and other council members
at least we got 2A right
BUMMER FOR PAUL! he becomes a grandpa the same day that Rene get back on counil. talk about a roller coaster ride
Just keep bullock off any committee that has to do with the north. He clearly only represents the south. I'll sign the petition if it ever comes around.
Anyone know where I can get some "big signs" really cheap? ;D
Congrats to the winners: now let’s move forward and make this a desirable place to live, work and raise a family by today’s standards.
C_City Voter
"Balance", that thought is such a joke. I think Colette is right this is a plan for Benson and Rene to tag team to go after the mayor.
Now Rene will have to watch HIS P's & Q's.
He won't be able to do his sneeky little plans, nor hit the city up for his personal benefit.
For those of you that voted for him, I can't say that I respect your choice, but I do respect your right to vote.
I do believe things happen for a reason, sometimes those lessons are painful.
For those that didn't vote...shame, shame, shame!
Mr Douglas, you may not realize that you were used to split up the northern vote. The group that encouraged you to run, never thought you had a chance.
Now I've heard you and Bullock are buddies.....so maybe you DID know you were set up to split the vote!!
I smell another BEER SUMMIT!
Right off the bat Gehler should sit down with Rene and Paul and get a truce in place!
three things we learned form the 2009 election:
1. Signs are good, but excessive signs are bad.
2. attend the forums, no matter how stupid or little they are.
3. get out to meet the people in your ward, ALL the people in your ward.

11/04/09
Elections are over. If you voted, congratulations! If you did not vote, why did you make that choice?
Congratulations to all who won, and thank you to all who made the journey.
I am so proud of the many citizens who took the time to run in this election. The time, money and energy the candidates expended is very commendable. A new city council will be seated soon. I encourage all our citizens to attend as may council meetings as possible. Get involved. Our community is growing. The council needs direction and input from everyone.
I would be remiss if I did not congratulate and extend a big thank you to the outgoing city council people. Reba Drotar, Scott Jaquith, and Orval Lewis have served our community well for a number of years.
I have one last request. Please pick up all the election signs quickly.
L. Charlene Jaramillo
dustie,
word on the street is that there is already a group that is trying to recall rene bullock?
confirm?
confirm.
the first night the new council is seated the BIG ELEPHANT in the room is going to be the recall attempts of Mayor Paul Natale by the Newly Elected at large council member Rene Bullock.
These two guys really don't like each other.
There has to be a way that they are going to have to sit down like 2 adults and at least get to the point of getting along to have a professional functional relationship. NO DINNER, NO BEER SUMMIT, just simply I AGREE TO DISAGREE.
recalls never work. how many attempts have we had in the past? like 5 or 6?
the people spoke. Rene got more votes then even the incumbent. that tells you something!
tells me people only like to see fireworks.
It tells me that we traded Reba and her family, for Reba's buddies, Rene and Deborah. I can't understand why Deborah wasn't pissed off that REBA and FAMILY & FRIENDS were the only ones that got to speak, no wonder everyone tried to talk over them. We're all tired of QUEEN REBA, the only one that's ever done anything good in good ole Commerce City.
Commerce City is quickly becoming the city of second chances!
same old cycle, election-recall attempt-election-recall attempt-election-recall attempt-election-recall attempt-election.
stupid. let it go. the people spoke.
I can't stand Rene, but unless he does something that is illegal or immoral than we need to let it go!
This isn't suppose to be a popularity contest!
Talk about letting it go.
Why doesn't Drotar leave it alone.
She is being seen all over the place contacting the new council people. Apparently planning to direct them from the sidelines.
Just when it looked like we would have a fresh start with most some of the new people!!
ATTENTION SOUTH ADAMS COUNTY WATER AND SANITATION DISTRICT CUSTOMERS AND TAXPAYERS
You might want to attend this meeting where an increase in both your water and sewer rates are being discussed. Since the district does not actually publish their legal notices in your local newspaper, we are not sure how you would know about this or how you could ever voice your opinion at a public hearing you were not aware of.
We were told in a phone call to the district that they covered their minimum legal requirement by posting this on their website and that usually most public hearings are poorly attended.
They did acknowledge they should do a better job at outreach. They use the Northglenn Thornton Sentinel as the newspaper to post their notices, a newspaper that is not home delivered anywhere in the city of Commerce City.
I am withdrawing from the race for Mayor of Brighton. The campaign was a positive experience for me and I hope for the community. Clarification of runoff rules by City Election officials lets me do this with a clear conscience knowing the city will be well run by Mayor McLean
Dick Hodge
Honestly, i'd rather recall Jim Benson more than Rene Bullock. Bullock gives comfort for the older people in the city that may or may not be afraid of change. Benson was elected to represent ward 2 which he's NOT DOING!
Kathy @ Gateway, can you post here when the meeting is and the address.
Talk about walking the legal line, by stating they cover themselves by posting on their website.
They are not well attended, in my opinion by design!!
Apathy can kill us all!!
Nice that Dick Hodge saved the tax payers of Brighton a bunch of money. And by tax payers of Brighton, I mean the Northern Range of Commerce City.
dustie, are you going to report on the recall attempt of newly elected rene bullock?
Congratulations to the winners of the recent elections.
It's really sad to think Mr Bullock can give comfort to the older population of our core city.
If the truth of what he has done in the past was really widely known, it would be embarrasment and shame, that they would feel.
He got their votes out of fear and lies. Those savey enough to know what is going on, didn't vote for him.
In the end, it is what it is and he has a right to sit on the council.
gateway
are you going to report on the recall group for rene?
We will publish all the prudent news, that is fit to print.
I am impressed with all of the Commerce City candidates.
I really don't see any more political signs out and about.
Thank You.
dusty,
can you post orval, scaott and reba, goodbye talks on your website?
Is the mayor a marked man with these election results?
I think it tells a lot that a guy who tries to recall the mayor comes in first for at large.
Rene Beat Jason by only 16 votes.
Yeah but jason only barely last.
It's not about being recall happy it's about getting people in office to work for the people and not to be self absorbed with their personal agendas. In my opinion both benson and bullock are distractions we don't need. I will support and sign a petition for either.
It's too bad that Commerce City will not have this type of community asset- thanks to the old council!
http://www.denverpost.com/ci_13744381
Now that the election is over there seems to be a lot of those who dont like the fact that Rene Bullock was elected. To those who are makeing these negative comments about him I say to them.
WHERE WERE YOU WITH YOUR COMMENTS BEFORE THE ELECTION?
Most of those makeing these comments sign it anonyomus. I did not vote for him because I didnt think he was the right person for the position and made statements to that fact.Well now he is there and will be watched very carefully as to see if he does a good job or not.
Those of you who write comments about him at least have the gull to give your name. A coward uses the title anonyomus.
Adams County School District 14 Board Member Vashaw says he wishes that the district had more money for students. How about having Jeanette Lewis spend a few hundred thousand dollars less on legal expenses? Tell Jeanette Lewis that when she is upset about something she could try talking to people instead of always SUING everybody with the students money.
yes I agree that the taxpayers of Brighton are the northern range Commerce City residents, there is a traffic jam from Reunion to the Prairie Center every day
Salty dog I think you are soooo wrong.
The north had way too many running, some were used to make sure Rene got in.
Many voted only for Rene to make sure their votes protected him.
He will be there regardless, only good thing is he won't be able to pull the crap he did before, he will be watched.
I'm sure he and Benson will try because they are of like kind, I just wonder how things will go when Benson trys to change the name again or some of his other stuff.
to the person referring to the denver post article.....
if you had attended or listened to the meeting about the boys and girls club, instead of supporting what was tried to be brought in so quickly, you would have questioned as did the council.
That was a pig in a poke. No one was being told the what, where, how of the "deal".
Deals like that can backfire and cost the city tons of money and problems.
Get your facts straight, Salesmen will try and sell you anything if you aren't wise enought to question.
A Humble Thank You to Brighton Voters
Brighton, CO – I would like to extend a humble thank you to Brighton voters for your amazing support over the course of the recent mayoral election. With a mayoral race that involved five candidates, your votes granted me an unprecedented lead after votes were tallied last week. It was not expected that any one of the candidates would garner a significant lead… your votes proved otherwise!
I would also like to thank Dick Hodge, my friend and colleague, for conceding the race after a run-off election that would have cost our community an estimated $25,000 was announced. Initial election results reported that I was shy just five votes from winning the majority vote as outlined by our current City Charter. Although I had a 25% lead over Hodge, the second place candidate, and had garnered over 49% of the total vote our City Charter allowed for a run-off election if fifty-percent of the votes plus one were not achieved. So even though I had the majority, Hodge had the ability to proceed with a run-off election in an attempt to win the mayoral race. By conceding, Hodge ultimately saved our city $25,000 for a run-off in an election that was certain to have ended with the same results. Thank you Dick Hodge for doing the right thing.
I cannot begin to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the citizens of Brighton for the opportunity to continue to serve you. I am honored and proud to serve as your mayor and will work diligently over the next four years to continue leading our community in the right direction. Thank you Brighton!
Sincerely,
Dick McLean
d#14 making it very clear that they want to go to a school district and not a district of schools.
No more special treatment for certain schools or students.
Interesting stuff!
I guess the city was going to take 4 guys all from the same area, REUNION!
You are right, there were too many candidates for the at large position.
Mayor is NOT a marked man
Rene and Steve are the ones who gave the city staff a really low score. So is this going to equate into action now?
bullock and natale! this should be very interesting
27J needs to take care of this situation ASAP!
I guess I have the same burning question as everyone else.
What is Mr. Bullock's plan after he is sworn in?
Are Mr. Bullock and Mayor Natale going to be able to work together?
How is this all going to play out?
I think 27J jumped the gun a little here. They need to have a sit down talk and not get judges and lawyers all involved.
Zooey, 27J parent Commerce City
Vikki,
We will have to wait. But if I know Rene, he will only do what is best for the community as a whole.

Good to hear it from the horses mouth
In-State Tuition
At a recent meeting of 140 parents and community members of the Adams 14 School District, both Robert Vashaw and Adrian Schimpf "stated their support for in-state tuition for all students, regardless of immigration status." Currently, even returning veterans can not get in-state tuition. Adams 14 School District currently has a 77% Latino student population. Each school year, Adams 14 suspends 27% of it's student population due to discipline problems. Out of a total school population 140 parents and community members or about 2.4% of Adams 14 members expressed an interest in in-state tuition or about .035% of Community members. The Adams 14 School District is the lowest rated school district in the entire state of Colorado. This school district has failed in it's mandate to educate the children of Commerce City. Even though, taxpayers pay the same rate of tax dollars as the rest of Colorado and Adams 14 receives the same rate of $7,000 per student per year that the rest of the other school districts receive. It seems as if Vashaw and Schimpf are throwing out a "plum" offering for immigrants in the form of in-state tuition for continued support of a failing school system. (Gateway News, Nov. 6,2009.)
It is time to reorganize an entirely new school district in Adams 14. How long can Commerce City taxpayers allow precious educational dollars to be thrown away each year? Let's look at some numbers: If, we have a total school population in Adams 14 of about 7.000 students per year and take that times 9 years (About how long we have been below standard.) that equals 63,000 enrolled students over that period of time. If, only 42% of those students graduated that would be about 26,460 students. Which means that about 36,540 Commerce City students have failed to graduate in these past 9 years. These numbers are a disgrace to any educational community. Adams 14 needs to close down and reorganize a completely new school district. Then, if we figure the Adams 14 budget per year is about 62 million dollars times 9 years the cost of a failing school district just goes out of sight. No group of taxpayers should be forced to support this kind of poor education for our students. Let parents have some kind of voucher! For those parents that worry their children will not graduate. Go to another school district of choice and ask for open enrollment. Any Commerce City resident can use open enrollment for their children. But, hurry only a few slots are currently available. Other school districts will be full by 2011-12.
Estelle Remington
Great stuff. Congratulations to Commerce City for recyle of the year!
Let's keep it Green!
Youtube has more then just that one video of Rene. We are in for a very interesting 2 years to say the least.
Yuri
Commerce City should be recycler of the year. GOOD CHOICE! Brighton doesn't have curb side recycling. Commerce City is on the cutting edge.
I am going to miss Reba Drotar. She did a lot for the kids of Adams County School District #14.
Thank you for all you have done Reba!
Annette, Commerce City
gateway you going to let us all know what happens in court?
Yes I will.
27J and Brighton Collegiate CRAZY STUFF! Never heard of this before.
Hyde
New Council members should all read a copy of the new council norms before then even come to the council chambers on monday.
interesting point of view Estelle, but I think it is easier said then done. It will take the parents getting involved.
good points, just easier said then done.
I hope this council is now ready to get to work and get this city on the right track
Heard last nights council was pretty straight forward and positive.
Sorry Gateway couldn`t have streamed it.
I think Commerce City Neighborhood Services should get some kind of an award for having to deal with what many are saying the most difficult Political Signage year ever.
GOOD JOB CC Neighborhood Service
I would like to thank the departing council members for their years of hard work moving our city forward.
I want to thank all those candidates that were not elected for running good campaigns and also for removing all of their signs in a timely manner.
Remember that you all showed your interest in the city and that is a sign of a living and exciting city.
I want to welcome the three new members of council who were sworn in last night. I look forward to working with all of the council to continue on our forward movement to make us a trend setter for great government and an example of a great city to the metro area and beyond.
To Jason. I never doubted that you would be back. Your future is bright.
To Tracey thank you for accepting the pro tem position. We will be a great team.
Paul Natale
Stephen, I heard most of it was, although Mr Bullock had to try and make a "statement" reference the mayor's position. He made a point of telling the audience that the mayor's position is a weak mayor and that the council had 9 votes all valued the same.
Funny thins Was he the one blaming everything he thought was wrong with the city, on...you got it the mayor. Interesting how his one vote was more valuable then.
So he is starting the little jabs right away.

Hello to you all, My name is Kenji Sato, I will taking over this blog until Dustin is able to get back to it.
There have been some comments that may have been deleted earier this week. It was entirely my fault and was a accident.
If you do not see you past comment, please resend for posting. Sorry about this mistake.
Sata,
Thank you for helping out while Dustie has more important things to focus on!!
thanks mr. sato, so what do youthink of our city?
Hello Kenji Sato,
I am glad you told us this. I did have 2 comments that were not published.
I will send them again.
Yes please send all comments again. I just have to get used to Dustie`s process. I would ask that please no more comments that contain racism about hispanic population.
just some quick background about me. I live in Osaka Japan and went to school with Dustin. I basicall do the samething Dustin does at the Osaka Shimbun Newspaper, I have been watching the stream of your city council every week. I also talk with Dustin all of the time about the political climate of your wonderful little city. I do have to say that it is part entertainment and part my love for city gov. I am a big fan of the city mamnger/mayor format. I have watch all of the videos and know all of the current players. The most fasicating is the personalities of the city council members. The inteaction is better then most television in all of Japan.
So I bring a new outsider looking in type of perspective. I look forward to reading you comments and answering any questions about my opinion of your wonderful city of Commerce City.
ps Englis is my second language, so I am sorry if I use it in a incorrect manner.

Happy Birthday Kathy Mac....we love you!

Good Luck Dustin

Does anyone know of other sites, forums for Commerce City? It appears this is becoming censored to the point where real issues can't be discussed.
Concerned!!
Dear Anonymous "concerned" you sound like the typical complainer.
People work this web site for the usefulness of the citizens.
NO pay and often NO thanks!
I've been told they only censor hateful or racial things (anything anti someones kids)
Now Sato is helping out Dustin (who has much more important things to take care of....so get over yourself!!
I will be working on this blog about once every three days, so if you dont see your comments please be patient with me.
Sato
anyone know what happened with the tea party that had a court date on the 16th?

To answer the question about the other forums, you live in America, I would suggest that you start your own blog. I would even go as far to say that you even promote it here.
You can never have to many opinions.
Gateway is getting around 5000 to 8000 hits per week according to the analytical data. So please start your own blog, get involved in your community.
