I have an idea: Let's stop spending our tax dollars on illegal immigrants and spend it for the children of American citizens.

Heard Boys and Girls Club supporters (maybe Lewis from Dist. 14) want big part of Pioneer Park given to them for club for south kids at Rose Hill School.

Excitement in Reunion. Wife stabs Husband. Found bleeding between houses wandering in Reunion Park.

Anonymous said...

Not only does it take money to build a Rec Center in the north, it takes land and cooperation form a lot of people including the residents.

Curious in Reunion said...

BLOOD in REUNION? rumor is stabbing went down? any truth?

Archer said...

Gateway News,

Do you know what happened in Reunion last night. Lots of cops and sirens.

Brent, Reunion said...

Why is there so much PD action in reunion last night? I don't think it was a stabbing, I think it was a domestic violence call? What was it?

Kathy Gateway News Editor said...

FROM KATHY EDITOR GATEWAY NEWS - I just spoke to Commerce City Police Dept. The information they provided to me over the phone regarding the "incident" last night, Sunday, October 24, by Unity Park is that it was a "medical call", "no charges are being filed", and that "they know everyone involved" so "people of Reunion have nothing to worry about". I will do a public information request for the actual police report when it is available and we will keep you posted as we receive any further information.

Curious in Reunion said...

What the Hell does that even mean?

I hear someone got hurt, not a medical call. So why is there no charges being filed?

Archer said...

what do they mean? They know everyone? What does that mean?

I would like to know why there would not be at least disturbing the peace violation here. Is it okay to get the whole neighborhood who is already on high alert all Nervous.

Belle Creek Observer said...

Medical Call my ass. You dont have a guy wandering around outside and you dont call in the Adams County Blood Dogs and you dont have smashed windows for a Medical Call.

Commerce City is just trying to once again brush the Gateway News under the rug.

Gateway News needs to ask for the police report if no release is given out.

Remember Commerce City, we the taxpayers are your boss!

Anonymous said...

There are calls like this all of the time, why is this one being singled out?

Erin NW said...

Can anyone verify that this was not linked to the trespassing we have had up here recently?

I think it has nothing to do with the break ins lately, it sounds like a medical call/ domestic violence.

I'm lost. did I miss something? What recreation center in the north? Is the city talking about putting in a rec center up here?

We recouped the $ with taxes from doughnut sales at 7-11 afterwards...

Just being cynical, really do appreciate what they do

Rogue said...

First of all, I do not think it is a knife situation that happened in Reunion last night. Hence the broken glass, I am sure someone just got cut. cut really really badly.

I am concerned that no charges are being pressed. It seems to me this is a perfect example of disturbing the peace.

I would hate to think that the PD would not press charges because of who the people were.

Now that would be a story.

WTF said...

"they knew everyone involved"??????

WTF??????

Anonymous said...

no city is not talking about a rec center in the north. It was part of a discussion about how much it would take to make a rec center in the north. Which is about 50 million dollars, therefore, we will not see one is a long time.

Via Email said...

Reunion incident was not that big of a thing. Sounds like a couple squabble that got out of hand. No big deal.

Commerce City Police Department said...

If you live in Reunion and looked out your window in the early evening around 8:30 p.m. you would have seen several officers from the Commerce City Police Department searching the area around Unity Parkway and Parkside Drive South.

Officers were called to 17272 Parkside Drive South on a medical call for an injured party. An intoxicated adult male was frustrated because he could not find his cellular phone. As a result, he broke a window causing severe injury to his arm. Prior to the police and ambulance arrival the male left the residence on foot. Due to the extensiveness of his injuries officers completed a search of the area. The male was located in the park lying underneath some bushes. He was transported to the hospital his condition is currently unknown. The on- scene investigation determined there was no Domestic Violence or criminal activity.

Archer said...

Thank you Gateway Mews for following up on this one. I think people will be more at ease.

Curious in Reunion said...

So, you can get mad and break your front window and it is not disturbing the peace. Not to mention you can do all of this Drunk and not get public drunkenness.

What a GREAT place Reunion is!

Archer said...

Why is he not being charged with Public Nuisance or Public Drunkenness?

Anonymous said...

No crime, huh? I guess tonight we should all get drunk and break our front windows!

I think they are not charging him because of what the Police said: We know the parties involved.

Just like the Perry deal!

Don't we ever learn?

"You people need to get a life"? Really, we had dozens of home invasions in Reunion, we have had dozens of our cars broken into, and now one of our neighbors is seriously injured, bleeding, running around the neighborhood, trying to get away from what we don't know, a plate glass window is busted out! Are you kidding me? It looks like someone either tried to kill the other person or someone is a danger to themselves. And we are living in the line of fire. Hey anonymous, shut up, until you walk in our shoes in Reunion. Guess you have no problems over there in River Run, am I right?

Anonymous said...

If he lost his phone, why would he break a window? If he wasn't scared, why was he running away? If he was seriously injured, why would he leave his house? He was supposedly intoxicated. But there seems to be more to this story and it is scary that the police will cover up crimes or ignore them completely. I hope this guy makes it and can tell what really happened to him, not just one person's side of the story.

Anonymous said...

If there are calls like this all the time, they are probably in the south part of the city. We don't have things like this happen all the time in Reunion. Sorry. We care about our neighbors up here a lot. And someone got seriously injured and almost died.

There's nothing for the kids in the north to do because Jim Benson's more interested in running the city and developement in the south. We need a person who will represent and fight for our interests in ward 2. Is it time for a recall?

Anonymous said...

A recall is very hard. Only 1 year till 4 people are off because of term limits, including mayor and Mr. Benson will have to run again to stay in office.

Anonymous said...

Pioneer Park belongs to all the people of Commerce City. There are a number of other great sites for the Boys and Girls Club.

gina, commerce city said...

I would have to agree. There is so much empty land around Commerce City. I would say there is better places for a Boys and Girls Club in Commerce City then Pioneer Park.

Fred A. said...

Is the plan to have the Boys and Girls club somewhere in the South. I am from the North and I was told that it needs to be in the south because of the Adams County School District #14. If this is true, that means it is a condition and can not be anywhere in the Northern Range because we are in a different school District (School District 27J).

Anonymous said...

Good Questions and Comments about a boys & girls club.

I know there is money sitting in a bank account that is for a boys & girls club initiative.

It will be interesting of where a boys & girls club will actually end up.

GREAT STUFF!

Anonymous said...

Why don't they put the boys and girls club in the old enclave west building? They are gone!

Anonymous said...

The city settled a controversy by agreeing to work towards a Boys and Girls Club in south. The land that was in dispute with a group of concerned citizens is the current Pioneer Park. Any land for a Boys and Girls Club needs to be in an area that is lower income and is accessible with transportation options for the kids. Personally the NW corner of 62nd and Holly would be a good alternative as is the undeveloped portion of Pioneer Park.

Anonymous said...

It is not a condition for the boys and girls club to be in the south. It is the preference of the the boys and girls organization. As councilman Bullock and councilman Morino said, the events center is unoccupied and there are also other places for it to be. It is only blocks from pioneer park, money from the people of the north was used to help build pioneer park. Also, the city owns a huge chunck of land at Havana and 104th.

Sammy, Commerce City said...

gateway,

Fred A. said...

so it is true that the boys & girls club will be in the south.

I don't have a problem with that. I understand that it is needed. I just was hopeful that there might be something for the kids in the north to do. The south does have a rec center and now it looks like they will get the boys & girls club too.

please dont twit my comments, I understand. I just wish there would be something anything for the kids in the north to have.

Anonymous said...

The city does need to be careful to balance the resources for residents of the North and the South. I know we are not suppose to think of the city as 2 separate areas. But we do need something in the north.

South has great pioneer park, a rec center and now getting a boys and girls club.

North has river run open space park and I think that is about it.

I see nothing wrong with the Boys and Girls Club being built at Pioneer Park. It would free up the city from having to complete it. This money could then go towards park projects in the north.

City Council meetings are on Channel 8, Thursday 7pm; Saturday 10am and Sunday 1pm. City Council continues to ask for citizen input and the citizens want nothing to do with CC because they have been ignored for years. Whoever mentioned committees was right, we do all these meetings and make all these recommendations and then the powers that be just do their own thing. For about ten years, now, the same eight or so people are sitting in the back of each meeting listening. I am thankful to them for sitting and listening to all that mess. Unless, they have something to say they can get as much out of these meetings on T.V.

At the Oct. 18th meeting, City Manger, Jerry Flannery, said that CC Administrative Staff was "bare bones." We are three deep in City and Deputy City Managers and we have a full time Lobbyist. CM Flannery wants to hire a Risk Manager for $100,000 + and that was passed by City Council. This Risk Manager would handle all injury and personal claims for Human Resources. We have about 6 to 12 cases each year. That second figure gives us concern because it has doubled in these past few years. Council person, Jim Benson, suggested we hire a person already on staff to handle this position during these financial times. If, we hired within our staff that person would be well rounded in the practices and policies of CC. But, Flannery thought that to be too expensive in that it would take 90 days to train another person. If, we hired from the top down that person would be trained only as a Risk Manager and would have no history with CC employees or people. Either way, if we hired from within or from the top down it would be a financial wash. Moreover, this new manager will take the claims process to a higher level of litigation in that most claimants will probably have to hire a lawyer to represent them.

Councilman Benson, discussed the Rental Property Task Force meeting on Oct. 28th at the Civic Center from 12pm to 2pm. He said, "We are in real trouble." I don't know what that means, but, no other City Council member added any comments. I don't know if the public is invited, but, it might be helpful to have some one listening in to these discussions, if, we are in real trouble. The rest of the council meeting was on donating a park bench, a card of condolence, a $100 tree for a competition and other social type things.

Belle Creek Observer said...

so Benson said "We are in real trouble."

What did he mean?, gateway Ask him.

Pretty simple way of getting the answer.

Don't worry council won't bite.

The graduation rate in areas where there is a Boys and Girls Club is higher than those without, especailly since Boys and Girls Club must use household inclomes and the number of free and reduced lunch kids to establish their areas. Which kids need more help right now- south kids or north kids? I support the Boys and Girls Club in the south!

Anonymous said...

The advantage to use Pioneer Park is the city owns it and could use it as their part of helping the Boys and Girls.
Since the Boys and Girls (BGC) is privately owned (not by cities) it also has major input. They are probably basing the location on need and factoring in that Brighton has one that the northern kids could use, abet it is a distance away.
The Mile High Events Center could be perfect if the purchase price is reasonable, then only some remodeling would be need. A much faster fix.

Anonymous said...

Belle Creek Observer-Benson said that in what context or reference??
I didn't hear it on the streaming.
Please claifiy-thanks.

Anonymous said...

Commerce City does have a Boys n Girls club.
It currently uses part of Kearny Middle School's bulding.
Good news/bad news, they have outgrown that space.
Thus the reason a new location is being looked at.

Anonymous said...

The government mandates that the state, will have to backfill any monies lost due to the property tax reduction, that we will be voting on.
Therefore the already pinched state budget will have to provide monies to the schools at a greater amount than they do now.
This means the state will have even less money to operate with.
Add the reduction in licensing fees, and basically no money will be availble to repair roads.
Along with the limitations on cities and counties to finance bonds ( 10yr max) most things we enjoy will come to a standstill.
You want snow removal, buy lots of shovels.
You want bridge, road, or highway improvements? Better buy stock alinement and tire companies.
Personal I hate the taxes and resent the "fees" but certainly have come to expect the benefits they provide.
There has to be a better way than:

101

Pioneer Park was supposed to have an outdoor swimming pool and water park for everyone in the city. It does belong to everyone in the city. It is not only wrong, but probably illegal to put a Boys and Girls Club there. Put it to a vote of the people and let them decide next November. And yes the children of the north need a Boys and Girls Club just as much if NOT MORE than the children of the south. And when are we going to quit using Brighton's resources, yes we pay them sales tax but give me a break. We need to build probably two Boys and Girls Clubs, one in the north first and then one in the south. How stupid do you think people are?

Belle Creek Observer said...

Hello??
Boys and Girls clubs are not run by or owned by any governmental organization.
They are privately owned and they try to partner with cities or school districts as they can.
They decide where to go!!
Who do you think has the money to just go build these clubs.
These take many dollars and many partnerships.
You must be one of the people that think the government can just print the money.
Its my taxes that you keep raising it isn't free!!
p.s. and no it wouldn't be illegal to NOT put the pool on that land. It would only take a council vote, that's what got it started not a public vote!!

I am constantly amazed at how some people want to bring out the negative, how nothing is good, enough that is.
Redoing Derby has been talked about for years, to improve it's appearance and hopefully bring in new business. A few years ago plans were developed. Now it
is finally beginning to look different. Will it immediatly change? Of course not. It will evolve piece by piece.
Some have such nasty comments about Spanish speaking there.
I find it biggetted and rude. You hide behind your anonymousness. You would never say these things in a public setting, because you know how really awful they are.
The city, businesses and citizens are really trying to improve the area. Instead of supporting the efforts for change, you mock and continue to make hateful comments.
Very sad.
Its time you take a hard long look at the man or woman in the mirror, you should be ashamed!

Still trying to figure out why we are all talking about a boys and girls club?

Did something happen that we don't know about. Moving into the Dog track event center would be a good move, the building cost around 3 million, most likely they could get it for 2.5, maybe with the right real estate professional.

But you need a champion to start it. A suncor, ups or fedex type. or some major foundation like taco bell, yum corp.

So I dont know I guess we will see.

Close to the situation said...

you can get a building pretty easy. I do think one of the "deals" would be that Commerce City pick up the tab at least a portion of the tab of the administration costs.

This is going to be a real deal breaker.

We still need something in the north, desperately.

Estelle Remington said...

In 2007, the council voted to give about $3,000,000.00 of the Northern Range Park Impact Fees to the Core City to build Pioneer Park. Which meant that the Northern Range's children did not get their parks, except River Run and Belle Creek. The Northern Enclave has about 3,000 residents with about 1,500 in Reunion. Which means that about 50% of the North's children have nowhere to go after school. If, we build the Boys and Girls Club in the South, the North will have nothing for generations to come. Also, in 2007, Adams #14 School District had a problem with school enrollment in that both core city parents had to work to feed their families. So, the older children had to stay home to take care of the younger children. State and Federal funds pay about $6,500.00 each year per student to attend their school of choice. Even, with 10 to 20 students that did not attend school that would be from $65 to 130,000.00 dollars in enrollment loss each year to Adams #14.

The Boys and Girls Club was asked to come in, in part, to provide an after school program, after school and on late Fridays as well as for the summer vacations. Along with that, Adams #14 began a free Federally funded summer feeding program for all students plus a reduced price for those over 18 yrs. When, the Boys and Girls Club first started they had about 100 students attend each day and after a period of about three years they have added 50 students each day to the program. That means that only about 2.4% of the Adams #14 school population currently uses this program with about 7% enrolled in the program after three years. (Using our last statistics of about 20,000 new arrivals and each household is estimated at 3.1 persons, which, gives a school population of under 7,000.)

The problem with the Boys and Girls Club is not that it is not an excellent program, which it is. The problem has always been location, location and millions of dollars to maintain after millions are spent on building. It was estimated that it would cost about $2,000,000.00 (Last figure given.) each year to maintain this program and that means that even though the North will not benefit from this program it will cost about $1,000,000.00 to maintain it. Contrary to council women Tracy Snyder, CC did try to pass an initiative to put a tax on Dick's Sports Center to provide $7,000,000 to build a Boys and Girls Club. In turn, they threatened to add that cost on to the price of your ticket for sports and music events. This city seat tax was over looked when the complex was built. When this initiative was being voted on, Stuart Middle School offered it's facility to the North for a Boys and Girls Club. It was refused by the Boys and Girls Club staff because they did not want to divide their program. I believe they were holding out for a new building. It costs $100,000 a year for the program at Kearney Middle School and would have added an additional $100,000 for the North and it would have doubled their staff. The reasonable answer to this question has always been two Boys and Girls Club programs one for the South and one for the North because of our physical layout, C, around the Arsenal. Now, the argument has always been that the South needs it more which does not hold true anymore as the Crime rate is increasing daily in the North. Truthfully, most of the children in the North come home to both parents at work. So, the answer from the Boys and Girls Club on that, is that, is not their problem. They just want their building and their money. We need to meet the needs of our entire community and building a multi-million dollar building for 2.4% of our students is not the answer.

I do enjoy your point of view.

They north has nothing for kids to do. So Sad!

Council Priority #1 should be grocery store, a real one

Priority #2 should be a community Recreation Center in the North.

I know it will cost a bunch of money. But it is needed in the north.
