Gateway News Disappointed in Negative Campaign Ad Using Our Video

Opinion by Editor Kathy McIntyre

This is not about this election or about politics really, it is just about right or wrong.
As we are all painfully aware, the airwaves are filled with negative campaigns from all sides.
Some candidates started out attempting to run only a positive campaign, but finally came out fighting when the blows were too much. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper appears to be the only one to stay the course.

I will get on with the real story here. Every year Commerce City holds the largest Memorial Day parade in the state of Colorado. It goes back in the city's history for decades, as they honor their hometown veterans and want to remember all their neighbors who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. They are very proud of their parade and Representative Ed Perlmutter always attends and always does cartwheels. Actually the only event he does cartwheels at in honor of the veterans in his district.

Our videographer was granted permission to be on the street during the parade and captured those Perlmutter cartwheels, the Commerce City Memorial Day Parade cartwheels. The Ryan Frazier campaign, without permission of the Gateway News, decided to use the footage of the Perlmutter cartwheels, in a very negative television ad. They never bothered to call us and ask if they could use the footage completely out of context from a parade honoring veterans, they just took it.

I am very disappointed in the Frazier campaign. I am disappointed that ethics seems to be lost completely, not only in this current campaign, but in our government altogether. Maybe people could think before they act and analyze what harm they are doing to others by only attempting to benefit themselves.

A child is a child in CC whether they live in the North or South makes no difference. Their needs are the same. Both parents must work to make ends meet in this economy. Children are hungry every day across this city. The drug, gang, graffiti and crime problems are the same North or South. There is no difference in discipline problems in schools.

The Boys and Girls Club of America would try to use fear in the South to make them believe it is their only answer. Which, is not true, when given the facts as to their low success rate over these past three years of how many children ( About 2.4% of Adams #14 school population.) they actually serve. The truth of the matter is that CC can not afford this $11,500,000.00 program for just a small handful of students in the South. This entire program is being used to prop up the Adams #14 poor academic performance record not for the welfare of CC students as a whole body of students. The Boys and Girls Club is using scare tactics on both the South parents and City Council. The City Council is trying to pass this program through as they did Pioneer Park before they leave office. The South does not need to stop this program they can continue to serve students for $100,000 a year which we can afford. We don't need a multi-million dollar building program to continue to serve these students.

The Boys and Girls Club is not our savior, we need more jobs and retail up North. How can, we even think of voting for this extravagance? It is time, for the parents in the North to make their voices heard by e-mail to council and by speaking out at CC meetings. For all of Ward 2 residents that have negative feelings against Council man Jim Benson, I urge you to stop thinking politics and start thinking Children's needs. It's time to stop this madness of the children in the South needing guidance more than the children in the North; they are all CC children.

Anonymous said...

For folks using the "poorness" of the south and its children to get grants to fund their own projects complete with high end salaries is sickening. For the boys and girls clubs and others to continue speaking about the "underserved" children of the southern part of Commerce City makes the children and families sound so pathetic. The ACSD 14 philosophy that constantly degrades their students by such low expectations and remarks is part of the reason why they have such low scores and grad rates. These children are ready to be challenged and respected. Its a crying shame!

But, I would ask that you put yourself in the city's shoes when you did the Wal-Mart letter video.

I see the two scenarios the exact same.

I do think the Gateway News does do some good for the community. I see that you post all of the city's updates and even have a direct RSS feed on the Gateway News websites.

I would ask in the future that you calculate the outcomes of your actions.

by the way I have 2 questions:

1. WHEN IS WALMART COMING?

2. New MONTH! SAME OLD QUESTION:

WHY DID THE CITY MANAGER GET $72,000 IN CASH OF THE TAXPAYERS MONEY FOR A SUPPOSED LOSS ON A HOUSE IN ARIZONA THAT HE SOLD FOR A PROFIT AND FOR A HOUSE IN REUNION THAT HE HAS NOT BOUGHT YET OR GOTTEN A MORTGAGE ON OR PAID A DIME ON? THERE WERE NO LOSSES SO WHY WAS HE GIVEN THIS MONEY???????

I voted for Ed Perlmutter as did a lot of my family and friends. If you take a minute to look at the 9News website and review their Truth Tests, every time Perlmutter tells the TRUTH or states an opinion, and every time Frazier LIES. So if anyone voted for Frazier, you voted for a liar, and it appears an unethical one at that. It was wrong to steal the Gateway video, plain wrong and I agree with Kathy McIntyre. And to the obvious city official Prc City blogging that tried to compare this to the Gateway Walmart video, are you nuts? The city did not have any video that the Gateway stole. That is an original Gateway video and the Gateway in no way altered the letter to Walmart. The letter is posted you can read it right there. Wish that the people who run our city would grow up and try to act professional, because obviously you are not. And start doing the right things and then the media would not have so much material to work with. And THANK YOU Gateway for uncovering the truth and for keeping us in laughter. Because that is all that is left to do is to laugh. Ten months - I wonder, bet we don't see a dime for that house.

Anonymous said...

The Gateway News is not negative, they are truthful! There are two concepts here, positive vs negative and truth vs lies. The truth about the government of Commerce City right now is very ugly and corrupt. That could be viewed as being negative for the poor citizens. When the government of Commerce City lies about itself, that does not make their lies positive, it just makes them look even more stupid. Grab a dictionary and look up the meaning of positive and negative, the meaning will not mention truth or lies. The Gateway is telling the truth, the government is telling lies. Anyone shocked? I am not.

I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT THE GATEWAY NEWS IS ENDORSING DEMOCRATS AND MAKING NEGATIVE REMARKS ABOUT OTHERS. IF YOU'RE A TRUE NEWS SOURCE, REMAIN NEUTRAL.

Gateway News said...

The Gateway News is not endorsing anyone, not because we didn't want to. It was merely the fact that we could not all agree.

Anonymous said...

All newspapers and many other commentaries and publications endorse the candidates they feel will do the best job. They do this nationwide. Check out the Denver Post. The Rocky Mountain News used to endorse candidates every election. Just because they endorse someone doesn't mean you should vote for them. Read everything you can, watch the debates, go to town hall meetings and meet the candidates. Every person is responsible for their own vote. We live in a country where your vote is completely secret. Now get out there and vote if you haven't already done so! Its your privilege, your right and your duty!

Anonymous said...

Anyone who thinks that the gateway remains neutral, doesn't really know them.
They have the right to voice their opinions and have no doubt they do.
McIntyre has even told people that she rights a lot of the blogs to get people going.
Guess that's her right too.
Guess Ryan Frazer isn't the only sneaky one.
I voted for him too, the ad meant nothing to me either way.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Gateway for the election locations, made it so much easier to find one today. And thanks for the info on the judges. Very helpful.

Dustin, Gateway News said...

To Anonymous,

If you think that you live in a county or city that is filled with people who do not have opinions about local government and are afraid of voicing them, you are sadly mistaken. The Gateway News has no need to "get people going".

The Gateway News hears the different sides and then will take the important issues and create sub categories. For example The China Plan of Commerce City or the city employees union idea.

It is true the Gateway News staff are humans (except for the 2 cats) and will by human nature form opinions.

But like anything else, usually they are from very different points of view. An example of this would be the Jim Benson initiative to change the name of Commerce City. We had vastly different views. Some thought that "Pioneer" would have been a good city name, I personally thought the name should never be changed.

The only things that we really agreed on recently is that the city logo of Commerce City is ridiculous, too expensive and should have been a Buffalo or Eagle. City Managers should not Drink and Drive in a city owned vehicle, and also Deal Breaker brings up major issues that need to be addressed.

I would invite you to re-read the comments being posted on the Gateway News and you will see that there is an entire array of opinions of all kinds on all different kinds of issues.

And of course your opinion is also welcomed.

Thank you to all who have commented and keep those comments coming.

Don't Think Your Vote Counts??? Consider this...

The 2010 Adams county coroner race is facing a possible recount. This will depend on the 2,172 provisional ballots and the 504 “cure” ballots.

Adams County Clerk and Recorder Karen Long reports that a recount could take place if the difference between the total number of votes for the top candidate in the race and the closest opponent is less than or equal to .5% of 1% of the top vote getter. That makes the vote difference needed for a recount in the 2010 Adams county coroner's race 254 votes. According to the "unofficial Vote Results", Candidate Broncucia-Jordan only led by 269 votes, that is only 14 votes ahead of a required recount.

Now comes the issue of the 2,172 provisional ballots and the 504 “cure” ballots. "Cure ballots are those with no signatures on the ballot envelopes, insufficient ID or signature discrepancies," Long said. "These voters have eight days after the election to “cure” the deficiency." Also, the overseas and military voters have eight days after the election to have ballots counted, provided they are postmarked Nov. 2.

So the 2010 Adams county corner race is not quite over yet. As soon as this is all sorted out, we will finally report who the candidate will be.

Anonymous said...

could someone tell me why a county coroner is an elected position? I don't really care but in my mind it makes more sense if it would be appointed by a non LE entity.

Anonymous said...

Could the incentive package be more of a joke? People they are using your tax dollars for the incentive programs and the only example they can give is the money they are GIVING TO MCDONALDS FOR A DIRECT MAIL MARKETING CAMPAIGN! I would think this was a joke if I had not read it myself. And actually that is a joke. We need direct mail from McDonalds! My God, they advertise nationally on TV. We need this like a hole in our head. This city is such a joke and Chuck Morris, Brittany Morris's father probably knows someone at the Denver Post, that is why the article is written NOT because anything good is happening in C Town.

Anonymous said...

I bet the petroleum products that were dumped were for a cheap garage.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

I find it difficult to belive that CC gave money of any kind to McDonalds. There are hundreds of businesses in CC that could use real help. I think this is just a rumor. Gateway, can you find out if this is true? Where did this rumor come from? Maybe it can be addressed at the city council meetings about rumors that are not true.

Archer said...

Gateway news, I will save you some time. It was straight from the city's mouth:

City Press Release Published on the Gateway News Business Journal:

"As an existing retail business, McDonald's franchisee Boselli Investments applied and was recently approved for the incentive program to help expand its marketing efforts for its Commerce City location at 104th Avenue and Highway 85.

"We want to be a member of the Commerce City community," said Rhonda Sebock, Vice President of Operations for Boselli Investments, adding that the company takes pride in being active in the community.

Boselli Investments continues to create jobs and employ local residents, and plans to use the rebate from their incentive package toward a direct mail campaign to market new products that will be offered at the Commerce City McDonald's location early next year."

I would still Love the Commerce City Staff to address this as a "RUMOR", it would make me feel a lot better know that we are not giving money away to a company that has a Advertising Budget bigger then our entire city budget and many fold.

CC first Lady, Kathy Natale, is going to have surgery and we wish her a speedy recovery. Both Kathy and Mayor Paul Natale are good and faithful people. My issue with City Council is the Sweetheart deal given to CM Jerry Flannery. It was just very poor judgment or misinformation on the part of some members of council. I do hope that Flannery is actively looking for different employment.

Council handed out certificates of recognition for a year's service by volunteers on committees to the city. What is so telling about the atmosphere on these committees (Old timers control many of the decisions made.) is that only 5 or 6 members showed up to receive them. Mostly, the long-term members.

Tracy Snyder said,"she would like to see Derby become the center of CC." Derby now has a beautiful tile plaza and landscaped area. During this construction project, my neighbor tiled a portion of his yard and the other neighbor beautifully landscaped his back yard after about 8 years of nothing but weeds. So, I think, that several workman have already benefited from the Derby renovations. I do eat down there, but, I would not shop there. I feel, so out of place in this Mexican setting, like, I am a walking target for who and/or what ever. If, you have ever gone to Mexico on vacation, you know exactly what I am talking about.

I wish these council people would get a clue. If we're going to be a success we need to bring the "center of the city" to the north area.
The south is our industrial area and should be marketed as such. Is this not the lipstick on a pig scenario? Commerce City has an opportunity to become a great family oriented community however if the council continues the pipe dream the north will soon become Denver or Brighton or Reunion.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous, I say to you get a clue.
Study more about the entire city. The stapleton, northridge area backs to our area and together they have much to offer.
NOT everything is REUNION, and personally I am sick of the elitist attitude that I constantly hear, from that area.
There are many wonderful hard working people in the core area as well as all of those who are now part of CC from the north.

The latest edition of Gateway News, Vol. 6 Issue 31, shows documentation and outlines in a progressive manner the alleged misinformation given by CM Jerry Flannery and City Attorney, Bob Gehler to City Council who in turn voted and gave permission to write out the necessary legal documentation to give Flannery a $72,000 bonus and $450,000 house to live in for free for these past three years. By anyone's sense of right and wrong this is a matter of mis-allocation of CC taxpayer's money. This article clearly exposes the fabricated lies and deceptions by Flannery and how Bob Gehler enabled Flannery to enrich himself at the taxpayer's expense. Great Job! Gateway News.

By saying I should get clue, are you saying south CC is considered a desirable place to live within the state?
It seems to me that people avoid CC and really want nothing to do with it. Those same people are business owners, persons in search of a home to purchase or investors.
The area is trucking, warehousing, cement/concrete factories, tires list goes on not to mention the tractor trailer traffic that comes along with it. It’s a perfect location for this type of usage with its quick convenient accesses to the hwy system. The city should take advantage of this; it’s the smart thing to do.

Update to Commerce City Criminal Trespass Theft Ring...

For Christmas, we spent about $1,000 and purchased a used, rebuilt, Security Camera System. Security camera systems are not just for businesses anymore. We have had vandalism to our house and cars at least once a year for the past four or five years. And, usually several of our neighbors on the same day. We went through the Internet and found security cameras with a full range of prices and many shipped free. With a steady increase in our area of home vandalism and invasions, it is time for home owners to start to protect themselves and each other. If, one or two houses on a block installed security cameras it would benefit the entire neighborhood. Remember, the police react to crime they can not prevent it.

We also have security covers over our window wells for about $700 and a home security system for $60 a month. We felt safe with our indoor security, until, three drunken people forced their way into our house when I answered the door late one night looking for a party. The lady was more than drunk perhaps on drugs and went right over the top of me. Her high heels just smashed my bare toes. I had expected my children and grandchildren that were coming to spend the night. The lady was fumbling with the door knob as the toddlers often did. That was just too close for comfort I could have been injured or killed. Now, we have cameras that are motion activated and connected to a computer 24/7.

At the Nov. 8th City Council meeting, City Attorney Bob Gehler said that he was no longer illegible for City Health Insurance since he no longer worked a forty hour week. He wants to do an Amendment to his employment contract by Dec. 1st, so that, the city can pay him the amount of his health insurance which means the Amendment will say that the city will still pay him the same amount for his health insurance and that he will have to pay taxes on that money, but, then, he would purchase his own health insurance from the money the city pays him. Someone, from City Council suggested that he look into Medicare. There are hundreds of city employees that would love to have an amendment written so that the city would still pay them money for health insurance even though they are no longer illegible, just like another bonus. The scary thing is that no one from City Council asked any questions about the legality of this amendment. Perhaps, this is new procedure that we don't know about? Gateway could you look into this and find out how Mr. Gehler can just write another amendment?

Gateway News Twitter said...

The Colorado Rapids advance to MLS Cup 2010! 1 to 0 over the San Jose Earthquakes! Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnn!!!

Anonymous said...

Estelle, since Mr Gehler is a contract employee, I imagine his contract if first discussed in a closed session.
Do not assume much of this wasn't gone over in that type of discussion.
Contract employess often get different "deals" as you call it, because of their specific job.
NOT everything is a lack of council involvement or a conspirousy

Kyle said...

Who cares if gehler gets insurace because of hours. The poor guy has poured his life into Commerce City. Let him have it.
Some of you don't have a heart.

Estelle Remington said...

Kyle, No one is saying that Bob Gehler has not been a well-paid, highly honored, faithful employee of CC for about 43 years. What you are saying is that he is a special case and deserves whatever he asks for. CM Jerry Flannery was called a special case and got everything he asked for in writing. Mr. Gehler signed his new contract without noticing it had no health benefits. If, City Council wants to give him health benefits all one has to do is make a motion and then write an Amendment to his current contract. But, then, shouldn't all other long-term faithful employees of CC under the city's EOE rules also be able to ask for health benefits while working a shorten week? Millions of short week employees must purchase their own health insurance. Why shouldn't Bob Gehler who at this point in his career should be able to afford personal health insurance not do the same thing? One can get Medicare and then for about $200 per month supplement it with AARP coverage.

Estelle,

Thank you for your explanation. I appreciate it.

Update Ch 8 Programming said...

I had the pleasure of catching some of the great programming on local channel 8 in Commerce City. You know, the one that our tax dollars are paying for.

I just have some questions. I thought the current mayor was Paul Natale and not Sean Ford. And who is Heather Grady (PIO). I thought our PIO quit and was never replaced.

hmmmmmmmm. I am so far behind.

PRO CITY said...

That was a video clip you saw on channel 8 in Commerce City is a old video of years ago.

The current Commerce City mayor is Mr. Paul Natale. The Person you saw as the "PIO" was Heather Grady and is no longer the Commerce City PIO.

We have 3 city managers and no PIO?

This does not seem to be right, does it?

To Wes: The city does NOT have 3 city managers. The city of Commerce City has ONE city manager and TWO deputy city managers.
As far as the Commerce City PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE. Those duties are being performed by current staff members.

Kathy McIntyre, Gateway News said...

From Editor Kathy McIntyre of the Gateway News.

All day today we have been receiving emails and attempted blog posts about a situation that is very vital to the welfare of Commerce City. We have made repeated attempts to gain verification or denial from city staff, city council and the mayor. As the current city council has stated that "communication" is one of their top three goals, this is a very disturbing situation. Obviously, they have forgotten their own goals, or they were never serious about them in the first place. We believe at this point that the city staff, city council, and mayor need to be reminded that they serve, yes serve, at the pleasure of the taxpayers whose dollars are being spent for their salaries, benefits and perks. Most every other city in the Denver metro area operates in a transparent manner as they realize that the dollars they spend and the actions they take affect their citizens, their taxpayers whose money is entrusted to them. In Commerce City, it once again appears that the city staff and council and mayor are preparing their "sugar coated" version of the truth before any information will be released. We want to thank the people who have taken the time to provide us with the information that they have and we know it was at great risk, even possibly losing their own employment, that they reached out to bring the truth into the sunshine one more time. We will keep you posted if and when any information is released, even the "sugar coated" Commerce City version.

Wow! that's the worst empty blog post I've seen. " about a situation that is very vital to the welfare of Commerce City"
either tell us what you know or we'll hear it first on one of Denver's outlets.

I agree, it is empty. I think I have an idea what it is. It is not that bad. It changes things, but it will not kill us.

Wes, northern range said...

Glad to see gateway is verifying before posting comments.

If it is what I think it is, it is not that big of a deal. Commerce City will be just fine.

Good to weed out the rumors.

"vital to the welfare of Commerce City"? I think Gateway News is just frustrated with amateur night down at city hall.

I am sure it is nothing that big of a deal to the rest of us.

hard time with communication with Commerce City. hmmmmm. I think I have heard this before.

CC SPIN is whirling now.

Anonymous said...

If you don't know what it is, you don't know how important it is. I think the Gateway is trying to tell us something but wants to make sure its true. Thank you Gateway News for not starting rumors, like the city of Commerce City did with the Walmart store in the north. Or the big China and Germany trips that panned out to nothing.

Close to the situation said...

It is hard to have communication when the Commerce City Communication Director walks out on the city.

I can hear the frustrating is the Gateway News words.

I am sure it is something more interesting then vital.

Anonymous said...

COMMUNICATION STUDY??? HOW MUCH DID THAT COST??? THAT SURE CAN'T BE TRUE???

Anonymous said...

Why don't we ever hear anything about other cities having problems like these? Why can't Commerce City learn from Brighton or Thornton or Northglenn or Denver or Aurora or Arvada or Boulder or Westminster or Lakewood or Golden? Is it so hard to do the right thing for the taxpayers?

Anonymous said...

Gateway is just trying to SELL the STORY. If true, yes it is News, if not it is just a waste of time.

I do applaud them for trying to verify.

Anonymous said...

Communication director walked out after the Mayor made her write the stupid Truth Test that was all lies. She did not want her career ruined. That was last spring, now its November, why didn't the city hire someone new? Maybe no one wants to work for Commerce City as PIO since they have to lie and fabricate facts to get a paycheck.

The Gateway is FREE last I checked. Did they start selling the newspaper? When did that happen?

I like the anaology about the gas and the matches.
The Gateway loves drama.
They love to show the city in bad light, and if you haven't noticed it's because you also want everything to be negative.
I can't imagine why anyone at the city would want to respond to another Gateway blog rumor.
Why give it breath. So many of the blogs are made up, much like the political ads on the t.v. One little piece of truth and tons of inudendos.
No the Gateway doesn't "sell" its "paper" it does sell advertising. The use readership as a tool....see any relationship to "good exciting rumors".
I highly doubt the Sunshine law has anything to do with this "newest" rumor.

problem with Neelan leaving is that she did ALL the work for the city manager, guess Flannery will have to hire someone right away or work himself which he would never do. bigger story is if Flannery is looking for another job, what the hell happens with the house? guess the taxpayers are out half a million dollars, and way more than that.

Anonymous said...

This week School District 27J Superintendent announced his intention to resign from his position at the end of the 2011/2012 school year. He wants a smooth transition because he cares about the school district and the taxpayers and the students. He knows he is needed and does a good job. Looks like Nanette Neelan wasn't really ever worth having in Commerce City because clearly she doesn't care what happens to the city or the taxpayers of the staff. She just must not be that important if no one even cares if she is leaving. Wow!

Anonymous said...

Dkey, yes this information is true, but many of the things on this blog are rumors.
Those can create problems, personal and private, but my feeling is people don't care.

Exciting rumors are not exciting for all. If you've ever been on the recieving end.

That was my point Dkey, that and nothing more!!

Now that the smart and qualified Neeland is moving on to work for a competent City manager will Flannery replace her with another incompetent and unqualified insider similar to the other deputy manager or will he promote one of his other very inexperienced newbies he created jobs for. Maybe there are some long term very experienced and competent employees that are committed to the city that could be promoted? Heck, maybe Flannery will actually do some work himself and we won't need 3 city managers and a "legislative manager". I challenge you to find another city of our size with a city manager staff that large - good luck?
