Great report Dustie,
Looks like Commerce City was the wild west back in the mid 80s.
Are you going to do the stats for the city of Brighton?
Yes, I will post the city of Brighton and other cities in Adams County throughout the month of December.
By the way, thank you for spelling my name correctly.
Think you got the talent to be a Commerce City Deputy City Manager??? (Salary $114,479 - $135,000 DOQ)....
http://tinyurl.com/2cvp5eq
ALL RIGHT! I am going to apply and ask for a house and a car!
so does this mean Nanette Neelan is definitely leaving Commerce City? I was kinda hoping she would stay. I envisioned her taking over as city manager after Jerry finally leaves.
How come there is no mention of a car allowance?
I highly doubt that any of you have the qualifications to be a deputy city manager.
thought you only needed to be a friend, family member or have a fake social security number to be hired in commerce city.
Come on Dkeys can be the offical city whiner!!
hey dkeys,
you can't just ask, you have to negotiate.
I thought the city would just go without a second deputy city manager for awhile, the never replaced the director of communication Kim McCarl.
LETS all encourage Commerce City to hire a Hispanic individual for the open position of Deputy City Manager. It will go very far in this great town of ours.
just a simple question: if Commerce city is looking for the following?:
"is looking for a dynamic leader. Responsibilities include advising City Manager and City Council on the effective, efficient, and economical practices in general areas of management and assigned oversight of the Information Technology Department, Human Resources Department and Finance Department. Incumbent must demonstrate strategic planning and ability to provide sound recommendations on a variety of diverse issues concerning city and community activities. Requires proven ability to develop short and long range goals and objectives; oversee the development, preparation, and administration of the budget; supervise, coach, and evaluate the work of directors, and/or other assigned staff; coordinate activities with other City departments to ensure effective working relationships; and speak before groups on the plans, programs, and goals of the area of assignment."
my question is: What does the main city manager do?
I see cc is also looking for a senior ED person. is there really that much ED activity in cc to hire another person?
CHEO,
I am ALL for Commerce City hiring a Hispanic professional for the new deputy position. Great idea.
no hiring based on race: we really don't need to fill the position but if we do it should be only based on qualifcation. Race base hiring in maybe an ICE office in commerce city would make sense since mexicans account for such huge percent of the illegal immigrants entering our country.
Also: by even suggesting such a thing you demean people such the police chief who was hired based on "qualifications" who just happend to be a Hispanic American.

Really Pro City 2.0, you doubt that any of us have the qualifications. I have a higher education than the current city manager. As do a lot of people in the northern range. Flannery did not have any qualifications to be the city manager and you as mayor should fire him or if you are Flannery, you should quit in embarrassment. And it would be a great idea to start actually hiring folks who are qualified, I mean actually qualified, for the positions in the city of Commerce City.
Pro City 2
What do you base your comment on? And we are still waiting for your ideas on how to improve the city.
A hispanic person? Someone like Mizraim Cordero?
Why does the new deputy city manager have to have more qualifications then the actual city manager?
"Master’s Degree in Public Administration or related field preferred, however, extensive public sector experienced may be substituted for graduate education. EOE"
Commerce City's Police Department has done a wonderful job of reducing Crime in CC over this past year compared to the previous 8 or 9 years and considering that our population has doubled since 2000. In reading the list of statistics, one can see how volatile the incoming population was and how out hand it all became. Thank You, Commerce City Police Department for keeping us all safe during these times of high population and high unemployment.
Pro City 2.0, You are so disrespectful and hateful. This is exactly why people quit coming to city council meetings.
I love the Girl Scouts letter. We all need to not litter.
Brownie troop has a good point. A lot of that trash they are seeing is coming from the garbage trucks going to trash mountain. Wind is blowing it right out of the trucks onto the road sides. I am glad to see the Brownies tackle this issue.
To Just a Question
That is what the city employees would also like to know. Neelan ran the city because Flannery was off doing heaven knows what and Acre is incompetant. Just ask.
Commerce City so far this year has 231 residential building permits. That is 91 more then we had all last year in 2009. Commerce City is moving on up!
I've seen lots of trash being thrown from cars of some of the construction wokers too. When I called and complained to the city they said call the builders. Another reason I'm moving as soon as I can sell my home for at least what I owe. Seems like city staff doesn't care about the north either. Maybe I should get someone to call in spanish.
Anyone thinking of applying for Neelan's position - fughetaboutit! Jerry has probably already promised it to one of his recent hires that were not qualified for their current job let alone the Deputy City Manager Job. In case you don't know Acres never managed anyone or any department or city staff when he was promoted with no application process. The application process is just for show. Why is everyone so impressed with Morris - so far Cummins located here in our great City - did you all know they already had an operation here - kinda makes sense to be located close to other regional operations don't it? What else did she bring other than a few liquor stores or laundromats to the core City where there are already too many? Businesses locate somewhere because the market dictates it - incentives are just bonuses so liars like Flannary can take credit for it.
the new deputy city manager not only has to have more qualifications than the city manager but also the deputy that is already there. Acres had none of the qualifications listed in the job add when he was given his job.
Dustie,
Is it true that CC is looking for a senior ED person?
Yes, details:

The brownie girls sure know how to get the attention of the media!
I say they take on the store in the north issue!
I think the girls scouts are talking about recycling blowing out of the stupid little recycling bins the city gave us. I see it all the time.
Dustie,
are brownies and girls scouts the same thing?
Belle Creek, I agree that the bins given to each household are small. We put a piece of cardboard on the top of ours to keep things in the bin.
Since this a free service provide to us, I do not feel that the city owes us to provide the large covered bins which we can purchase.
Not everyone participates and the cost to us the taxpayers would be hugh.
So we make it work, maybe a little inconvenient, but ya, life isn't always convenient.
I would like to thanks CC for providing this service.
Pam Downs in ED passed away this summer. They are hiring to fill her vacancy.
To add some information about the Commerce City recycling program, not only is it free, but a lot of other cities don't even offer it.
Anonymous and pro city say: "Since this a free service provide to us, I do not feel that the city owes us to provide the large covered bins"
How is this program free? Is Waste Management (WM) doing this for free? I think not. Last I heard it cost the city around a half million dollars. And now comes they reality check, the city pays for this service with tax dollars. Thats right folks, the money that comes right out of your own pocket. 3.5% to be exact. Every time you buy a coke or a snickers bar you are paying money to the city. Even when you buy a gallon of gas from Suncor those taxes Suncor pays to the city are passed onto to the people.
Almost everything the city does takes money and that money comes from us the tax payers. Even the "grants" we get from the state of county or federal are from taxes.
So no, the program is NOT FREE!
I say thank you to the citizens to make this recycling program possible. It has NOTHING to do with Commerce City "giving" us anything for free.
good point belle creek.
What are all the ways the city makes money?
Some of the way commerce city makes money:
Sales tax
Use tax
Fees
Fines
Little on interest (bank accounts, jerry's loan)
Grants (yes, tax based eventually)
Sales from Golf Course, Restaurant
Commerce City Revenues include money from Taxes, Licenses and Permits, Charges for Service, Fines and Forfeits, Miscellaneous.
right dusty, so like i said before, money from hard working people, nothing is giver to us for free.
Well, you have to consider that many of the residents in the north give their tax dollars to mostly Brighton and Denver. So maybe with that consideration, the recycling program is free.
DAMN! Troop 4013 really have started a hot topic.
Who is with me in replacing Commerce City council with Troop 4013?!
Until people understand that yes, taxes do pay for gov. services, we will never get anywhere.
Your right, and if were not careful the costs for services needed for Commerce City are going to outweigh the revenue generated!
You all still think you can be a city manager?????????????
I think the original point was, unlike some cities CC doesn't charge for the service.
Unlike many cities CC doesn't charge for trash pick up.
Many cities charge and add it to the water bill, I know Thornton does.
Yes the city brings in money in many forms, but roads and their maintainence, police protections, snow removal, parks and their upkeep, the list goes on, isn't free.
No city runs without it citizens, but unlike the Feds, it can't just print more when it runs out.
All you racist need to learned spanish and shop in commerce city
My point is YES commerce city does charge us for the recycling program in the form of taxes, fees, etc.
No, it is NOT a "FEE" now, at least not yet, but it is still a TAX-Driven program.
I feel like I am going crazy trying to explain this.
The city does not run ANYTHING with out PEOPLE paying for it as part of taxes or fees!
City does not produce anything, they only take and then redistribute.
And of course they waste a lot too. Like printing 9,000 copies of a publication to northern residents that don't live in ADCO School Dist. 14. Or giving 72K to a city manager for some kind of a mystery "relocation" fee.
I do not know how to make this any more clearer.
I would argue that the city does produce. They produce jobs, parks, roads, rec centers, police protection, and the list goes on and on.
again, YES because of the people pay for it. One way or another. THE PEOPLE PAY FOR IT!
TAX - NOUN - 1. a sum of money demanded by a government for its support or for specific facilities or services, levied upon incomes, property, sales, etc.
2. a burdensome charge, obligation, duty, or demand.
city does have services that are legit fee based, such as passports.
Okay, take away all the sales and use tax from the city budget and see how many days they can survive.
Or better yet take away just the taxes from SUNCOR and see what happens to city "services"
I agree with what the Brownie Troop is seeing is most likely wind blown recyclables. I would hope that there would not be people purposely just throwing trash outside. If there is I would be all for a stiff fine.
Does Commerce City have a fine for littering?
Person involved in Commerce City roll-over accident on I-76 Thanks Public Help and Shares Story...
http://tinyurl.com/2e9umd9
dusty is there a chinese delegation in comm. city now?
hey belle creek, so obviously that is SUNCOR paying those taxes, NOT local residents.
Okay, fine Mr Anonymous, and you obviously do not understand how businesses like Suncor and BP get their money. Do you think they just print it?
Or just maybe they get it from you and me and just maybe they pass that tax obligation onto you and me.
I know that when you drive to the gas station there is only one price amount form whatever gas grade you choose to buy, but YES IN FACT the tax that the gov is charging is built right into it.
I am getting tired of trying to explain myself. Is this really that hard to explain?
Wanted to be the first post but let the first of the month slip right past me. Well good citizens of Commerce City it is now only NINE months until we get our full $450,000 back from Flannery. That is only 36 weeks! Then we also get to elect five new people to city council in November 2011. So next year will be a good year here in our fair city. Now who can run for those seats. We certainly cannot in all good conscience reelect anyone that is sitting on the current council, since not one of the nine have ever done anything to explain the $72,000 just given to Flannery of our money and not one of the nine have ever even made a peep about Flannery not paying one red cent towards the house, taxes, or insurance. And none of the nine seem to even care that no job evaluation has ever been done of the job (or lack of job) that Flannery has done over the last 3 years, no accountability. So people, start thinking about who should run and bring our city back from the disaster it is in now.
Bev and Bob Benzel are two of the most giving and loving people Commerce City has ever been blessed with and Russ Hensel is so deserving. Many congratulations to all of them for receiving the very special awards from the Commerce City Business and Professional Association!
Mr. Belle Creek Observer, maybe if you would spend a little time listening instead of sitting on your high horse of know it all, you might realize that what some of us are saying is.....
Yes taxes pay for the services, but some cities are unable to provide all of those services to their citizens.
Many cities have had to cut back hours of operation, jobs or just plain services.
Some cities do not provide services without an extra fee, such as recycling and trash pick up.
So yes, yes, yes we all get it that taxes pay for it, but the budgeting directs how that money is used.
Get it????
The clock is ticking. Jeannette Lewis, President of Adams 14 and Paul Natale, Mayor of Commerce City will be out of office in just under 11 months. It will be a new start for Commerce City!
Good, the city will get its 450 K back from securing the loan and then collect about the same amount of interest from the bank. Then what? – Continue to complain about the 72k your city government pleaded with Jerry to take to lure him to our inexperienced town?
It’s not an easy decision to uproot your family in an economic downturn.
That same city council approved the light that has slowed traffic to a crawl on the CC part of Tower Rd. I guess the phantom 72 K loss in AZ was like the phantom autos turning into and out of the parking lots.
Too many small town mindsets in this city and I wonder how many years before our leadership gets it.
I dont like the video of the flag football game, but I like the photo-stream. Very nice shots.
Ref: New start for CC in 11 months.
I pray it isn't more of the same old CC.
I remember the deals and dirt.
Proof of a new respect for our city is evident.
ED director picked for Hickenlooper's transistion team.
Mayor picked for transistion team.
Staff members picked for move up jobs (seen as well trained compitant employees).
I know some of you will put these comments down, frankly dear, I don't give a damn!
dont miss holiday event in cc tonight! at civic center
I'm not going to put your comments down, however "compitant" is actually spelled "competent"
:D
Does anyone know what Morris and Natale will be doing on the transition team? if anyone thinks that they will be getting paid and will be making high level decisions you are all sadly ignorant. "Transition Teams" are nothing more than pretending that the Governor's office wants input from around the State- it is just a PR move and they always have been, sorry it is just "fluff". The ignorance some of you exhibit is incredible.
maybe the mayor can do what he did on e470 and then tell Channel 4 all about it!
rumor is BM will write anger letters when business decide not to come to CO and RE-Name places in CO where they are struggling.
I would like to take this time to encourage the Commerce City Council to give their support in form of a resolution in Support the the DREAM ACT.
We should not have to pay the price for uncaring parents sneaking into and burdening another country.
Unemployment is too high and they’re hardly any jobs for kids of American citizens. It makes no sense to support a dream act or any other form of amnesty.
Hey OLD guard,
Leave the CC Mayor alone. He is a great leader, he is just surrounded by idiots.
Speaking of idiots. Benson got my one and only vote!
I will second that!
From the Commerce City ED Dir.
Presentation to the Atlanta Regional Commission a success! Audience very impressed with what we have done in Commerce City!
Atlanta Regional Commission?? Are you kidding me?
What have we done in Commerce City?
Atlanta is a far, far, far away from Commerce City. I would love to see a video of what our ED director said.
Did they read the walmart letter at the Atlanta Regional Commission?
Here is the question the citizens should be asking.
What are we doing in Atlanta? Do we not have enough problems here?
A new Walmart super center will open in Longmont early next year and the company plans to hire 200 workers. http://tinyurl.com/2awvfqn
And were doing so well in Commerce City!
wait a minute! Hey WALMART WE WERE FIRST! Didn't you get our LETTER!
(A new Walmart super center will open in Longmont early next year and the company plans to hire 200 workers. http://tinyurl.com/2awvfqn)
What the hell are the complaining about. We would die for a walmart!

How come Brittany Morris's name isn't on any of the reports that came out of Gov. Hickenloopers office today? Wasn't she representing CC on the transition team?
FYI,
Atlanta invited Commerce city ED dept to come, and paid for their stay...
do with that what you wish, I'm sure some jokes can be made, but those are the facts.
No Brittany Morris is not representing CC on Hickenloopers transition team.
She is on the team.
She is employed with CC.
She is not "representing" CC.
Team members were not chosen for the place they were from, but what they could add to the team.
Deal with it.
dusty, I would love to see a report on the attendance record of some of our Commerce City Council members.
Both their attendance at council meetings and events/gatherings they signed up for and did not attend.
Are they on city time?
Nice picture! Is hunting allowed in Reunion? Who needs a store!
funny! fresh DUCK for Christmas!
Looks like Neelan will be starting Lakewood just in time for all of their grand openings in Belmar! Good for her. Mean while, can someone tell me what exactly we have done in Commerce City.
City's Economic Director said "Presentation to the Atlanta Regional Commission a success! Audience very impressed with what we have done in Commerce City!"
What did she say, so I can be impressed too! Just remember I will go outside and verify!
Wow! Brighton builds recreational facilities in residential areas.
They must care about their people not breathing the exhaust from manufacturing plants, cars-trucks-tractor trailers.
There is so much land for sale near 2nd creek, why doesn't the city make an investment and buy and build on 104th Chambers. It can only become an asset for the city and even increase surrounding property values which translate into more tax dollars…
bottom line: I'm closer to Brighton than south cc so I'll continue give them my money so they can build nice things.
I WANT TO KNOW TO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
City's Economic Director said "Presentation to the Atlanta Regional Commission a success! Audience very impressed with what we have done in Commerce City!"
What did she say, so I can be impressed too!
I just finished watching the video: Commerce City Police vs. ACHS Eagles {Flag Football Fundraiser}
Those Cops are really tying hard. The facial expressions are classic.
Great Shots Dusty.
Brighton builds a new acquatic center. I'll just hang my head and wonder what happened to Commerce City.
So Brighton gets a water park and we get a bunch of ducks? Oh man!
I see the city has gathered all of these sad stories from some of us in the northern range about our trails of not having a close grocery store. My question is Now What? Do we bundle the stories up with the many petitions that were passed around to try and get a store here and mail them to walmart with a second copy of the famous city crafted walmart letter? Or was this just a ploy by the city to show us all that they are "working" on the situation. A situation that they already told us that was going to happen.
Truth be told!
Isn't CC going to get a water park too? I thought we were going to get one at Pioneer Park?
I hope they're not building more recreation in the south while the families in the north that pay a hell of a lot more taxes have nothing.
we need a city council person that will represent and fight for us.
A big thank you to Bill Becker for his years of service at Adams County Economic Development. His last board meeting was Thursday.
north pay more taxes as far as GID, but as far as property to city, it is nothing.
Hey! isn't AdCo Bill Becker in the Deal Breaker story some how?
Mr Becker,
Thanks for all your service in Adams County

It is my understanding that Bill Becker was the Industry Standards Consultant that negotiated salary levels and other incentives towards CM Flannery's package deal when he was hired for Commerce City. I believe that anyone involved in creating and negotiating this package deal had no idea who or what they were truly dealing with. Had Commerce City been in fact, a high wheeling, financially strong Adams County administration the story might have been different. For years, CC's budget was at $55 million with half the population and we had about $50 million in a surplus fund under Mayor Ford. Currently, we have too many people at the top of administration and on council that just don't understand the full process of building a city for the people and by the people. As with all governments, the citizens must be fully heard and those listening must act upon what the majority of citizens ask to happen. The citizens feel that Mr. Flannery should pay back his Bonus and that a fair settlement on the taxpayer's house needs to happen now rather than Sept. 2011. All it would take is a motion by council and a new amendment to his contract. Have a Merry Christmas!
Estelle,
Please don't speak for me.
I too am a citizen of CC.
I feel that even though the contract was overly generous, it is that, a contract.
Merry Christmas to you as well.
Anonymous,
You say that the contract is too 'generous', but you make it sound like their is no choice in the matter.
Contracts are not just something that happen and we can not control.
Contracts are not like the weather. And if you look at this particular situation, obviously they can be changed, re-changed and then again re-changed.
The contracts with the current city manager are both irresponsible and outrageous. Of course this is just my opinion and I am sure you disagree. If your okay with giving someone 72 grand for some phantom reason and to this day still has not been explained in any way that makes sense. Then I guess we just disagree and we need to move on.
YOU SAID IT WES! WE ALL NEED TO MOVE ON!
I don't agree with the 72K but a deal is a deal. I'll never return bonus money and won't expect anyone else to. There are so many hours worked without the knowledge of most. hourly wage employees get to go home after 8 hours and forget about work.
Incentives are there for a reason for exempt employees as overtime pay is there for the non-exempt. Get over it and get off your butts because elections are in less than a year.
You would never return a bonus? Maybe you should consider that this is tax payer money and not some private company that is successful. Commerce City is nothing but a governmental agency has not one, not two, but three over paid city managers and have grossly under delivered. Case in point is the Walmart that was suppose to come according to the 2010 state of the city address, we are now only 2 weeks away from 2011! Also, some kind of a city run Recreation Center in the north!
Wes,
contrary to your popular belief, NO ONE can force a business to build, we still do all live in America! On that some line of thinking NO ONE can force a city employee (i.e. deputy city manager)to stay either!
Just for your clarification: Commerce City does not have 3 city managers. Commerce City has ONE city manager and two deputy city managers.
Wes, I suggest that since you have so much understanding about government you should run for office.
I would also love a rec center in the north. I have lived here for quite some time. Yet I know that the cost for a rec center is VERY high, and no I won't accept the "don't pay the city manager so much and we can afford it, BS"
Taxes would have to cover the cost of a rec center and I certainly don't want that right now.
If you have such great ideas, as I said before Run for Office next fall. Get involved!!

For the second time in a month Pastor Darius Holland and the members of True Life Church in Broomfield reached out to the families and children of A14. Along with a number of Clasified Employees of the district they feed these families for Thankgiving and gave each gifts and food baskets.
Yesterday (Sunday) they returned and again prepared a meal for families in need and once again brought Christmas gifts for the children. Along with this act the shared the message of God's love and hope to those attending.
Again I thank you Pastor Holland and members of True Life and members of the Classified employees of A14 that made this possible, God Bless you all.
Congrats to anythink!
One can amend any contract and if a Bonus is given in error or based on a half-truth the ethical thing to do is to refuse to receive that bonus with a fair explanation. Flannery had enough information at that time to know that this Bonus was not based on fact. There is no reason council can not make a motion that CM Flannery would have to pay the taxpayers rental money for living in the taxpayer's house for free for these past three years and for these next twelve months. Only the President and Governor of Colorado get to live in a house for free. Council can also have Flannery's name taken off of the house Title and Deed, that is not in any contract. This is just my opinion, but, I feel, Mr. Flannery owes the taxpayers thousands of dollars for living in the taxpayers house rent free since 2007. Obviously, this is how Mr. Flannery does his own personal business and we can only expect more of the same in years to come. For those out there that think that if someone is dumb enough to give you money or a house to live in for free, you should just take it, there are ethical people out there that would set the record straight. We can not "move on" and let this wrong continue.

Absolutely GREAT NEWS. CHRISTMAS HAS COME EARLY!
are you serious!?
GREAT GREAT GREAT! very good news!
I think this is a better situation. If city can get a Kings to come then I would bet then Walmart will fall right into place.
I LOVE IT!
I would be happy if you are a resident in the north, but you need to be cautiously happy. It is just in the works. Don't get me wrong, I am happy, I just want you all to be NOT expecting. It is subject to change.
Thank you CC! kings news is wonderful. Saw it on facebook!
Looks like city was happy about it, they tweeted it twice! I am very happy. This is exactly what should happen. WAL-MART can wait. Grocery stare is a great start!
king soopers is way better then walmart anyway
A big congrats to cc staff & council. finally a step forward.
Awesome news about King Soopers coming. I say lets give the thanks to those who deserve it,like King Soopers and Shea homes. Our Council and City staff told us for years they have done everything they can to bring a store and they cannot force retailers to build but they will when the numbers are right, but now they want to take credit for it when it does happen. if you read something other than the Gateway (no jab to the Gateway) you would read that corporations are sitting on loads of cash. You would also read that King Soopers and Wal-mart are building new stores and remodeling old ones all over the metro area. How about Shea homes who did the land deal to make it happen because having a grocery store in Reunion must make it easier to sell homes in Reunion. You might also read that the economy is recovering and has a brighter outlook making investments by businesses more likely. All in all great news and I will be the first in line to buy my groceries, but please give credit to those who deserve it as I am certain this would happen with or without the City's "involvement". Let's hope Wal-mart follows close behind and may we even hope a sit down restaurant will follow near the King Soopers also. If you have not tried the restaurant at the Golf course (Buffalo something)I suggest you do it is very good and reasonable prices.
The announcement and appearance by Kings at last nights council, is proof that the city HAS been actively working on this for quite some time.
Just because the info is not out there for all to be aware of does not mean the city staff isn't busy spending hours trying to move us ahead with business.
Things like this don't happen overnight, but take months of hard work.
Thank you CC staff and council for this hard sought effort.
Now Kings, please follow through!!
I thought the cm only had a low interest loan. he's not making any payments? if not, is there interest and taxes accruing to be paid by him later?
KING SOOPERS coming to Commerce City is SUPER NEWS!
unbelievable news for the us in the northern range of commerce city.
It has been a long 8 years, but I would have never changed my mind about moving to the area. We are a community filled with good people and strong sense of togetherness.
I can not tell you all how thrilled I am about this news coming out of Council Chambers.
Thank you to the city staff and council for hearing us and not giving up. Good things are starting to finally happen in Commerce City.
if this really does happen, you will see other development quickly come. sounds strange but that is how it happens. it will put pressure on walmart to do something sooner rather then later.
Bottom Line: very good unexpected news.
I would actually prefer a King Soopers to a Wal-mart.
I was just pushing a Wal-mart because I wanted some kind of a grocery store!
If I had a choice I would pick a King Soopers!
I am so Happy! Great News! Great News! Great News!
ok so a possible ground breaking for Kings in CC north and a IKEA in Centennial?!?!?!?!?!?!?
2011 is going to be a FANTASTIC YEAR!
About the News last night from Commerce City Council:
I am happy for the newlands, but I am also happy for the city as a whole. This is going to be good for the residents of course, but the city's bottom line in the future.
dusty can you put this on the cover stories page too?
Due to the magnitude of this news. Not only did I put it on the Cover Stories, it is also on Gateway News Business Journal, and Government pages.
MAYOR PAUL NATALE HAS WHITE HAIR BECAUSE HE IS THE REAL SANTA CLAUS!
KING SOOPER NEWS IS THE BIGGEST CHRISTMAS REUNION EVER GOT!
I have one request. Can they make the store so it faces the right way. Not backwards to 104th like the business that are already there.
this kind of news is why the internet is so wonderful. it is all over facebook.
WOW comm. city is really excited about this King Soopers News. They have twittered the hell out of it.
ps: Dustie I love the feeds on the side of your webpages. Makes it east and convenient.
kings is the biggest news since the NASCAR fiasco!
Archer you are right 2011 is going to be a FANTASTIC YEAR! If this really happens.
I will hold out until I see dozers moving dirt.
Once Bitten, Twice Shy!
don't twist it I am very satisfied why this news. I am just one of those who will be cautiously optimistic.
Dustie,
Westword did a play on your headline "Gentlemen start your engines" from the NASCAR days. Too Funny!

$2 million package for Kings. I say give them $4 million.
I am elated about this news coming out of city council!
Made my DAY!
HA! Take that Brighton. We be getting a KINGS in Reunion!
I'm exited because it's going to be right off the trail; hope there’s lots of bike parking.
Good job!
Blah Blah Blah - Anonymous who said thank King Soopers and Shea Homes could not be more right. If you believe that they are building because of a mere 2m incentive package when they will be investing probably 30m to 40m based on 30 or 40 years of revenue please give us all your phone numbers because I have some ocean front property in Iowa I'd like to sell you. they are building everywhere and this is a natural place to build now that they have tons of dough and the economy is on the mend. to the anonymous who said give them 4m, please don't cry when you have no recreation center or parks or road widening. the fact is they would have built with or without the incentive package and as I have said before, the ignorance some of you exhibit is really comical but sad.
To the person who said this will be good for the City's bottom line, I hate to tell you we really don't pay taxes on groceries in Commerce City, so actually after the incentive, not really such a good deal to the bottom line. And to Curious in Reunion, I also have some ocean front property in Iowa to sell you like the other anonymous mentioned if you really think that huge national corporations like King Soopers and Shea Homes made the decision based on 2m in incentives (let's just call that a bonus)and because Mayor Natale was in a meeting or two - I bet you really do believe in Santa Claus.
so how long until POST and Denver Biz journal picks up this story?
Fantastic News! I preferred a King Soopers in the first place. The Market place is the new way to go. I would like to see the Northern Range have a huge family party at the new King Soopers when it opens just to show our appreciation to King Soopers.
On the question about the CM's interest and taxes on the taxpayer's house. The taxpayer's have paid all taxes and interest on this house and will continue through Sept. 2011. CM has not paid one dime towards the cost of living there. There was some mention that CM paid some kind of Insurance but, I wouldn't bet on that. It is not fair to the average citizen who has to pay for their place to live to have to pay this house. I would not mind living in a 1/2 million home for free for four years. The estimated cost of a rental would be around $144,000 for three years.
Anonymous blah_ create a site name so I can follow your posts.
A grocery store will help attract more home buyers to the area which will means mo money for everyone…
from the ancient Iowan proverb:
If you build it-they will come.
Some of the nah sayers are the same ones complaining that council and staff did nothing to get us a store.
I hate to confuse them, but yes even though Kings would only build when they were ready, the incentives DO matter.
This store will be unlike any other store in CO, according to Kings themselves.
This store will have other goods besides groceries.
The city will therefore get taxes.
(personally I am glad we don't pay city tax on food)
Shea, Kings and the city spent many weeks of negotiations to get this done. They ALL deserve credit.
Anonymous,
Your right on! The incentives DO MATTER, the matter a whole bunch! $2M is nothing to take lightly.
I am glad the city has agreed, mostly the current city council has agreed to this deal.
You will all see. Having Kings in the area will spark all kinds of great things.
Such a Wonderful past two days.
I LOVE IT!
from the ancient Iowan proverb:
If you build it-they will come.
from modern Commerce City proverb:
If you Build a Kings Soopers-Northern Residents can eat Ice Cream
KingSoopers can also get walmart to build faster at tower and 104th.
great news.
cant wait for the biz juoural and post to pick up the story!
here is another ancient Chinese proverb - don't go counting your chickens until they hatch
so the incentives do matter, I guess because you said so, really cogent argument, also if it took this long to get a grocery store in an area with a captive audience, then I guess all the other development that will bring taxes would have been in exactly the same situation, that being a captive audience with no other choices to serve, yet they did not come either. I guess we will be giving Applebees a 2m incentive as well to locate next to the King Soopers
All I can say is thank you Shea Homes, King Soopers, citystaff and council, for continuing to work to get everyone together.
Inspite of the nasty comments and negative people you continued the fight.
Now we have to pray Kings will do as "they" said.
Oh for a gallon of cold milk and hard ice cream!!
good year. we get kings soopers and mcdaniels is gone
I would caution you all. I think a lot of you should re-read the King Soopers information. We have to see where is will go. Not all written in stone yet.
negative anonymous comments makes some valid points and I think all they are really trying to point out is for everyone to use a little common sense and logic. Kings is great news and we should all be very excited. i think negative anonymous is only trying to point out the reality of the situation. As they pointed out we were told by the City and Council there was nothing they can do for years, so when the City and Council and others want to take credit or give it to them it seems a little hypocritical if you stop and think about it for a minute, especially when Kings is building elsewhere. Anyway I hope to meet some of you bloggers at the grand opening- YIPPIE!
I think is area that king soopers is suppose to go was where safeway was suppose to go about 5 years ago?
Remember Walmart was a done deal.
I believe the point that some have been trying to make is the city has been trying to bring in a grocery store.
Some have implied that they have been doing nothing.
The business certainly has the last say, they city can offer up loads of incentives, but until the business wants to come, nothing will happen.
Having said that, a few have implied that the incentives don't matter. I don't believe it.
Business knows it can push the deal for tax pay back.
Business can also see that we are very ready and that small business is doing very, very well on 104th.
Yes the timing has to be right, but the city and developer also have to be cooperative.
I agree with you all. Great News, but they still have to build it.
I wish we had the Kings Soopers for weeks like this week when I have 8, count them 8 guests, including out of state family in for Christmas.
well at least in this case Kings Soopers "big shot" came out in a public venue and stated their intent to build.
Everyone cross their fingers they follow through!
I love that kings is coming. wonderful news
I have a feeling that 2011 will be a good year for Commerce City.
city says "ground breaking could perhaps be as early as fall 2011 with a third quarter 2012 anticipated open date."
Mayor will be out with 4 other council members. So is this just something that they are telling us to keep us happy until new council comes on?
Duaty,
ANy takers on the Deputy City manager position?
Maybe someone like an actual city manager?
to anonymous....."mayor will be out 4 new council will be in....is this just something they are telling us"
Since King's representative and Shea's rep both were at the meeting, that would be a rather involved "show" don't you think, just to protect this coucnil?
We have been stung by businesses promises in the past, but with the companies coming out, I think this one will fly.
County court judges serve an initial provisional term of two years. Then, if retained by voters, they serve four-year terms with an annual salary of $123,067.
How much do our city managers get?
Food for thought, Commerce City
123K for a judge? But they only need a Juris Doctrate!
What education does our city manager have?
ohhhh, that is something we don't talk about.
I thought the Kings news would keep you all happy at least for a month!!!!!!!!!!!
gateway.
so i guess the only good city manager neelan is gone by now, right?
not only is the good one(Neelan) gone she was the only manager, the other two could not "manage" a church bake sale.
so when council offered a $2M to shea for a kings soopers, does that not then make the wal-mart letter look a little stupid?
KINGS for CC! Greatest News.
Good question Charlie,
So does this mean that if we donot hear back from Wal-Mart by Jan '11, we will not give Wal-Mart their incentive?
DAMN! Insightful questions! that is why I love this blog!
I'm seeing lots of homes selling in Reunion, how are the other areas in the north?
Knowing that wal-mart will not want anyone else to get money they could have I bet they'll start building at the same time or before.
you people could use king soopers-rancho librio or walmart already in core city while you're at the rec center or or one of our other recreation facilities here in the south.
I think the north coming to the south for city services and groceries is unrealistic.
2011 will good to get rid of this do nothing city council
I beg to differ. This current Commerce City Council has brought city wide recycling, Cummins, and possible Kings and Wal Mart. Not to mention one of the most Agressive economic inventive packages this city has ever seen.
Hey Commerce City, aren't you glad you jumped in bed with the Chinese?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101229/ap_on_bi_ge/as_china_peaceful_rise
There you go again Pro City. Cummins was coming anyway as they already have regional operations in Commerce City. Walmart has not come yet, King Soopers has not come yet, and again if you think national corporations looking to mine many many millions over many many years make their decision based on up front incentives and who is on City Council you are just ignorant. The aggressive incentive package is excessive giveaways to businesses that will locate here regardless if the market is right for long term revenues. No taxes from businesses then no roads no parks and no recreation centers or sports fields or other activities for us and our children up here in the wastelands.
BUT!!!!!!ward 2 rep IMO has done nothing to push our needs and has to go.
Commerce City incentive program has created 450 new jobs and generated about $33 million in capital improvements! And an estimated 210 new businesses joined the Commerce City community in 2010!
Pro City grow up, you cannot attribute all new business and jobs directly to the incentive package. Try reading something besides what the City and Gateway write. Business investment is on the uptick everywhere in the metro area. You simply cannot discern whether or not a company came because of the incentive package, it is very likely the business would have come regardless, again, because the market is right for long term profits.....a few dollars in incentives up front that might represent 1 or 2% of start up costs and even less of the overall projected revenue of the life of the business is not the critical issue, the incentive merely becomes an added bonus to the business. Please take off your rose colored glasses for just a moment and try thinking logically, like a business person and not like a City employee, which I think all of us have figured out that you are.
