GN: any truth to the rumor that Commerce City Golf Course (Buffalo Run) is already decided to be sold?

In the Know said...

I have a problem with Commerce City Manager words: “It’s encouraging to know that even with the economy slowing in the past couple of years, Commerce City has continued to develop”

Is it not a fact that Commerce City has been stuck in a rut at 45.000 to 46,000 residents since 2006?

Right before Flannery was hired?

If not mistaken, we were suppose to be around 65,000 to 70,000 by 2010.

I want to make a quick comment regarding the Commerce City Mile High Music Festival taking a "hiatus" in 2011...

This is really sad news. The MHMF was becoming a annual tradition for the city of Commerce City that it could be proud of.

It was becoming something to look forward too, not to mention it was a great advertising piece for Commerce City.

It created an environment of excitement that will be difficult to re-create.

I hope this event will return in the very near future... BACK IN COMMERCE CITY!!!

Archer said...

Nicely put Dustin,

Why did you say "I hope this event will return in the very near future... BACK IN COMMERCE CITY"

Do you know something we don't know?

Dustin McIntyre, Gateway News said...

Every year in the MHMF media area there is always has been chatter about the event possibly going to Denver or Jefferson County (Lakewood)...

Of course half the people in the media area also think the event was already in Denver. So that gives you an idea of how smart they are...

BUMMER NEWS about the music festival in Commerce City.

I guess this will not be in the state of the city?

In the Know said...

why can't jerry flannery write chuck morris a letter like he did to walmart?

Belle Creek Observer said...

Seems to me they could still have the Mile High Music Festival if they would just scale it back a bit. No need to have such a monster of an event. Any talk of maybe still having it, but making it much smaller?

Sammy, Commerce City said...

Lets all be honest, The mile high music festival was never Commerce City's.

It started in Denver by Denver people.

It just ended up there because of logistics.

If it does come back it should be moved to Denver city limits, the real MILE HIGH CITY!

Resident in Historic Commerce City said...

Dusty,
Easy for you to say the music festival was so great. That is because you don't actually live here. For those of us who do, the traffic was awful, the city never saw any revenue from it, the money was always filtered down to Stapelton, and the noise was awful. they pointed the stage right at the neighborhoods on 60th in 2009 and played to the early morning. I speak a a lot of others when I say GOOD Riddins!

Wes, Northern Range said...

Commerce City losing the MHMF is worse news for Denver then Commerce City.

Curious in Reunion said...

Dustin: Rumor is maybe they might still have it but in a smaller capacity? Any truth to that?

Lovely statement about the MHMF.
But it is not your job to promote Commerce City. Just be neutral.

SO it is all talk about how great the economy is and how we all are optimistic about the way the city is doing, until reality hits us right smack in the face as the Mile High Music Festival not coming.

People BEWARE! people will talk and talk and talk. Have the common sense enough to actually trust your gut feeling. Things are not going good.

There are so many things wrong here!

Pro City 2.0 said...

I would like to give the point of view, that the announcement of the Mile High Music Festival is not because on the economics of Commerce City alone. We as an entire state are recovering. Yes, things are getting better, but we still have a ways to go. We need to try to stay positive and work together. It is unfair and uneducated to say that because the Mile High Music Festival is not coming this year, it is the only fault of Commerce City economics. Simply NOT TRUE. Many, many factors went into the decision of canceling the event this year.

Q said...

hate to say it, but I agree with Pro Spin City 2.0 (new and approved)
music festival only had people from Denver attend. I would be willing to bet not a lot of Commerce City residents actually went. It has more to do with the overall economical situation and not just Commerce City.

Whoever made the comment that this announcement hurts Denver more then Commerce City is right on target.

Anonymous said...

rumor: festival could still happen, just smaller?

GN, can you confirm?

Dustin McIntyre, Gateway News said...

From Commerce City: "No discussions for a festival this year – it’s on hiatus due to the economy. AEG indicated to the city they are optimistic that the festival and other events could return to Commerce City in the future – they continuously promote the venue to acts."

Anonymous said...

Why does the people of commerce city care about the mhmf? you don't get much from it. Denver makes all the money and your taxes have to clean up after them. The advertisers lists it as in Denver. Hotels and restaurants are booked in adjacent cities. Oh, the major news outlets makes fun of you for it.
Congratulations to the person from last month who sold their home and moving elsewhere. So many of us wish we could sell.

Anonymous said...

I find it so weird that when the first year of the festival was announced the mayor and Flannery and City Council gave us all the impression with their comments and behavior that they were somehow responsible (we all know they had nothing to do with it) because they originally wanted to have it in Denver City Park, but Denver said no. Denver recently changed rules that now allow for profit events in City Parks - I wonder where it will go if it comes back at all? So if they take responsibility for it coming to Commerce City why don't they take responsibility for it not coming - from a core City dweller- I am glad it is gone because it never caused anything but trouble down here and the City never made a dime.

Wes, Northern Range said...

sad stat of affairs when people are happy to move out of a city.

What incentive does AEG Live have by having this event in Commerce City?
I do think it will end up in Denver eventually, if it even comes back at all.
I think AEG Live is really busy getting acts into the event center on highway 36.

So Morris says no MHMF because of economy?
It has absolutely nothing to do with Dick's not being a destination spot?
I for one am NOT optimistic that it will ever come back to Commerce City.

here we go again...Flannery and Morris will tell us and City Council how "they" brought the 2014 World lacrosse championships to Commerce City.It surely has nothing to do with the stadium and the surrounding 24 fields - it will all be because of the efforts of staff and City Council. Flannery better get some development going at Hollow Victory Crossing by 2014 or the great event he will claim to have brought us will cost the City instead of make it money given all of the players and spectators will be spending their money in Stapleton hotels, restaurants and shops - just like the Music Festival that no longer exists. Does anyone want to bet me that the advertising for the "World" Lacross Championships will say - DENVER?

Why does Lacrosse have to meet with City? Dick's doesn't need to get blessing or permission from the City to hold a tournament whether it be soccer, lacrosse or extreme frisbee. They can do whatever the laws allow for the property.......Mayor and City Manager always have to make it sound like nothing happens in CC unless they say so or were directly involved - get real Mayor your job is to smile and read the proclamations declaring it National Hamburger Day and not much more than that.

Anonymous said...

Gee if Flannery and council could wave a magic wand, and make restaurants and hotels appear (overnight no less) some like you....would say they had nothing to do with it. They again would get no credit and only more complaints.
It really gets old, that there are some in this city who like to always try to point out something negative.
I swear, if Christ himself came down and said something good about the city staff or council, you would say it too was a set up.
I remember the old city manager who did have to buy our awards (that was the only way we were recognized in a positive way).

we have to be smarter voting for a mayor this go around and hopefully we'll get some good candidates.
The last mayoral election it was more a vote for or against nascar. As a result we got stuck with a ward 2 person who fights for ward 1 and a mayor who ignores and fights against US citizens.

Wes, Northern Range said...

Can't help but wonder why the city is suppose to provide kids "something to do".

What are rec. center for? What are parks for?

City is suppose to provide a safe, healthy environment where people can flourish.

Maybe if we had more things for the kids in the North to do, we would have people who would actually want to be here.

Estelle Remington said...

At this last city council meeting, the Director of Parks and Recreation presented a request for about $11,000 to have the original architect of the twenty year old Rec Center develop a plan of action to bring the kitchen area into compliance with current standard requirements for a commercial license for the sale of food to the community. The kitchen at the old rec center was never designed to actually sell food for community members to eat. The topic of discussion was a senior birthday luncheon. The CC Rec program currently caters this event at a cost of $15 per person and charges seniors $6 to 7.00 per person to eat. Which is about what it would cost to go to lunch at a local restaurant. Staff at the rec center have known since 2007 that this kitchen area has been out of compliance and that's why they currently use a catering service. Other cities around us use catering services or some have spent the money it costs to get a commercial license. Staff estimates that it would cost between $400 to 500,000 dollars to bring our kitchen facilities up to commercial standards. It was also suggested that it would cost thousands more to up grade kitchen plumbing to be in compliance with South Adams County's water standards. This plan could also include an expensive addition to the old rec building to house the new commercial kitchen. As a taxpayer, I do not want to pay out another three-quarters of a million dollars just to build a kitchen for senior birthday lunches and cooking classes. If, there is a need to build a commercial kitchen in an addition to the old rec center, I would like to see that kitchen built in a new recreation building in the Northern area and we could save thousands of dollars and meet all Seniors needs. One more time, this plan pours money we don't have into just one area to meet the needs of half the city. Pay these architects the money and develop a plan for a small recreation center and commercial kitchen up North that we can build onto as we grow and just continue to cater functions at the old rec center. Staff did not say how many seniors attended this birthday luncheon.

Anonymous said...

hmmm. that is interesting. I think I agree with Estelle. Sounds like a LOT on money for little benefit.

Archer said...

The city of Commerce City ALREADY owns a kitchen! Don't the OWN the Bison Grill. You want a senior Birthday, take them up to the Northern Range to the city owned restaurant.

Just make sure you get the food your going to cook down in the south. We do not have any grocery stores up here now.

From Denver Post article
Colorado tax break intended for struggling farmers enriches developers, investors

In Adams County, Denver sports mogul Stan Kroenke's real estate firm owns 54 ag parcels in Brighton near Interstate 76, ranging from less than an acre to more than 500 acres. The tax bill is $3,200.

But the plans for Kroenke's land don't include crops. The land is part of the massive Prairie Center housing, retail and commercial development.

My family in Kentucky brought this to my attention. The city of Lexington, KY hired Angelou Economics to create their economic development plan. Angelou was also hired by Commerce City to do their economic development plan last year. Angelou was caught “recycling and plagiarizing their old plans” by some vigilant citizens and now Lexington wants their money back for the plan. One of the recycled plans is the plan from Commerce City. Angelou has been doing this for awhile and now it is in the news. See for yourself:

http://www.progresslex.org/2011/03/03/angelou-economics-recommendations-are-oddly-familiar/

and:

http://www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/Questioned_raised_about_accuracy_of_economic_report_meant_for_Lexington_117438004.html

It looks like Angelou cannot create a new economic development plan at all. How good is our ED plan and how much is copied from other cities? How much did we pay for this unoriginal plan? Who from the city signed off on this? Maybe we should ask for our money back too.

Anonymous said...

Here we go with the Spin Cities. I am sure there is no way that the absolutely brilliant Flannery and Morris could have been dimwitted enough to pay over $100,000 to Angelou for a "stock" plan that just had minor modifications from plans produced for other cities. Hey Gateway why don't you find out for all of us -I bet they were dimwitted enough given their relative lack of experience in the jobs we taxpayers and our "representatives" have bestowed upon them for reasons unknown. Having been a citizen somewhat involved with the City Comprehensive Plan I can assure the plan was very specific to Commerce City because the Planning Department made sure it was,but they are experienced people in their fields not liars, shmoozers and butt kissers who will do and say anything to get a job or a promotion like those in the City Manager's Office and those he hired or promoted.

Archer said...

From Commerce City Angelou Report SERIOUSLY:

"RECOMMENDED NICHE TARGETS

Venues for dining and entertainment
In addition to elevating the quality of life for Commerce City residents, eating establishments and entertainment venues are a necessary amenity for today’s corporate culture. Many businesses in Commerce City are international companies that often host collegues and clients who are visiting from abroad. International and local businesses alike need venues for entertaining guests; because Commerce City does not offer these kinds of services, residents and employers are spending money outside of the city to meet these needs. Commerce City needs to expand hospitality options to capture this revenue stream and at the same enhance the business climate for area companies.

Hotels
Closely related to the need for food & drink and entertainment venues is the need for accomodations in this area. One need within this category would be business class hotels, which offer basic amenities such as in-room internet. Hotel options, from basic to business-class, are important not only to for business travelers, but for
potential tourists and residents hosting friends and family as well. With the offerings at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park expanding to include large music festivals, Commerce City will be missing out on tourist dollars if visitors must look for accomodations outside of the city.

Sports and health related retail
When taken in combination, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, the Rocky Mountain Wildlife Arsenal Refuge and the Barr Lake State Park constitute a wealth of sports and outdoor amenity and activity options. Retail that specializes in sports and soccer apparel and equipment would be a good fit as many soccer enthusiasts are entering the city for events year-round."

Please tell me that we did not spend more then $100 on this BS Study! Did we?

Protest Planned said...

When? DENVER: Saturday, March 12, 2011 1:00 p.m.
Where? SE corner of Lincoln and Colfax (near Capitol building)
Bring: Signs, water, snacks
`
Spread the word! Grassroots protest together in support of the protests in Wisconsin, but also to:

* Protest GOP efforts to subvert our democratic and legal insitutions (Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin)
* Protest union-busting legislation – now in at least 17 states
* Protest tax breaks& bailouts for Wall street & other rich corporations
* Protest budget cuts to education, medicaid, and other essential services
* Make it clear that we stand for worker’s rights
* Let the GOP know we won’t tolerate them passing bills illegally and subverting the legislative process

Here are some facts, in case you aren’t aware:

* Wed. March 9th, Repub senators in Wisconsin took all fiscal items out of their “Budget Repair” bill and rammed through their union busting provisions. Less than 2 hours notice was given for the special committee meeting in violation of WI Open meetings law AND they passed it while a Democratic legislator was telling them the meeting was illegal. Let’s send a message this is not OK, in WI or anywhere else!
* GOP is giving tax breaks to corporations at Federal and State levels while cutting education, medicaid, welfare, housing subsidies for the elderly, etc. Why give money to the rich when the rest of us are struggling to get by? Why balance the budget on the backs of our kids?
* Wall Street C-level executives continue to get huge bonuses and salaries even after the bail-out — with our money!
* In Michigan, on 3-10, Repubs passed a bill that gives the governor the power to declare a state of emergency ANYWHERE he chooses, and abolish unions, contracts, even ENTIRE ELECTED TOWN GOVERNMENTS. Gives him the power to designate one person to run that area — and the GOP rejected a Dem amendment that would limit that person’s salary to no more than the governor’s ($159K/year). How is that about the budget?
* In Arizona, a bill is on the table to give the Governor the right to set up a militia FOR ANY PURPOSE SHE CHOOSES

The Republicans are moving across the nation to steal your civil liberties, and send your money to the rich. Tell them: WE’VE HAD IT!!!

Estelle Remington said...

Anonymous, you are so right, one vote doesn't do much on city council. For example, different council members are forming agreements to push expensive projects through that benefit small groups of people before our next elections. Like, the purposed new commercial kitchen and public room for the Rec Center for over $500,000. The political balance of city council is very important. We need to get people on council that are not self motivated or support just half of the city. There are several good qualified individuals that would like to see changes come to city council and I hope as we begin this next election process that voters can get these people into office. It feels useless to go before council and voice one's opinion because they are promoting their own agenda.

Anonymous said...

Estelle, do you realize your friend Mr. Benson, is the big proponent of the kitchen remodel.
It is his push that has directed this.
Yes, this is not in his ward, but that is of no suprise.

Anonymous said...

FYI Estelle,
I agree that we need some new faces on council.
Having said that are you aware that some of the "old" movers/shakers in the city are trying to go backward and bring previous council/mayor members back in. That will return us to the black sheep city we were.
Come on new blood, we need you!

Estelle Remington said...

Thank you, for allowing me to comment on Mr. Benson's support of upgrading the Rec Center Kitchen. What Carolyn Keith presented was a need to meet Tri County Health's requirements for using the current kitchen which was addressed in 2007 by the Rec Center Director. At that time, it was decided to just cater the few senior events rather than pay a lot of money for an upgrade. Now, Carolyn is asking that the kitchen be upgraded so that seniors can cook and retail for their own events on-site. Mr. Benson is supporting the idea of a kitchen upgrade. Asking that bids be taken and given to get the work done as cheaply as possible for the seniors. He has not supported the idea of paying for an architect to design a new addition. However, if you watch this presentation over again and take notes, like, I did. Other council members want to "teach cooking classes to children of all ages." This would require: a culinary kitchen to be built, a public room for classes, expensive cooking equipment and perhaps hiring a chef to teach culinary arts. This is better left to a vocational training school. The Rec Center has about 1200 classes to support. This would be a very expensive project if we intend to provide culinary training. Mr. Benson was only supporting the upgrade of the kitchen so that seniors could cook for special activities which should cost as little as $100,000 or less which I would also support. But, my first choice would be to take the seniors to Bison Grill and let the professionals cook for them. Other council members are saying that we would have to do a complete renovation of the 1987 Rec Center. It sounds like the right decision was made in 2007 and we should stick to it.

In the Know said...

Bison Grill sounds like a great idea. Also, if kids want to learn to be a chef, I thought the new Adams City High School had a complete culinary teaching Kitchen. Why can't they utilize that route?

"old" movers/shakers in the city are trying to go backward?

Are you Kidding? What forward progress have we made in the last 4 years?

No development around City Hall, No Development in the Newlands, A top heavy staff that is costing us dearly. Foreclosures Galour in the newlands.

We are not in a Golden Era in Commerce City now! Quit trying to fool the residents. They do see what is going on!

When people see the city in a dead rut, they will go back to what was good, and yes that would be good past council members to right the ship that has been badly commanded the last 6 years.

I welcome the old council members, If they decide to run, I am not saying any are, I am saying if they decide to run.

Archer said...

I am not so sure going back to past council people is such a good idea. Not saying they were necessarily bad leaders. "New Blood" as you call it, is always a good idea.

You getting these people who make being on city council a lifetime job is just asking for trouble. That is why term limits are GREAT and should always stay in place.

The BIG problem with Commerce City is that the citizens are just not interested in run for elected positions.

Maybe the council pay needs to be evaluated.

Too bad this issue is such a taboo that one that current council is too scared to touch it.

Something should be done to make this endeavor of being a elected official WORTH WHILE!

Forget a CC Council pay raise.

The real issue that the city will face is eventually all of the AT-LARGE council members, the mayor will be from the northern range!

Not right! Change is needed!

Unforunately, Mr Flannery chose to stick his thumb to his nose at city council and the residents of this city by appointing Mr McBroom to deputy City Manager. Commerce City does not need another 100,000+ salary position for a city this size, all the while Mr Flannery is no where to be seen and has no interest in managing the city.

Right the ship???
Get real, core comments.
So now the entire economic downturn, a national crisis, is this councils' fault.
We have gained respect in the last few years, in the metro area.
The laughter and snickers about the inside deals, family meals, limos etc, paid for by the taxes, are no longer a reality.
One of the past council members, provided the numbers, basically wrote the contract and worked hard to convience the council to vote for the city managers contract. Then skipped out when time to vote , so they could say they didn't vote for it
. That "type" of "leadership" we don't need any longer.
I say please, we need new faces with fresh honest ideals.

Anonymous says- "We have gained respect in the last few years, in the metro area. The laughter and snickers about the inside deals, family meals, limos etc, paid for by the taxes, are no longer a reality."

Well, the REALITY now is that Denver Metro area is laughing and snickering about the "out in public" deals like giving the city manager Jerry Flannery $72,000 for a house that he made a profit on.

There is NO wal mart in the north as promised in the 2010 state of the city. There is car allowances that are OUT OF CONTROL!

There is Top Shelf staff that are over paid and do nothing but hold meetings and tell each other how great they are.

There is NOTHING going on around the new civic center.

We spent a lot of money on out side consultants that gave us information that we already knew.

We have a economic incentive program that is nothing more then a prime example of Desperate times call for Desperate measures.

City Government is suppose to provide services and protection, that is it, not become a incubator for Staff to "Develop Professional" so they can leave us high and dry like Deputy City Manger Neelan did!

I say we are damn lucky that the population did not hit 70,000 resident as once projected. We simply do not have the budget to handle that type of growth.

Bottom line, the last 6 years have NOT been a GOLDEN ERA in Commerce City. We have been out maneuvered by both Brighton and Denver.

We are the BLACK SHEEP Adams County.

You want to continue with tell yourself that the Emperor has Cloths go right ahead, but I guarantee that you are in the minority.

One thing to add:

One has to ask, did Mr. Flannery hire internally for the deputy city manager position to quiet down the comments about the city always hiring outside talent?

Just a question for you all to ponder.

Council also will advocate for a locally preferred transportation project – the final ramp of the Tower Road/Pena Boulevard interchange – to ensure improved access to and from Denver International Airport.

Hey city "leaders" did you ever think that just maybe the residents of the city know what they are talking about? You are so smart but yet you get nothing done. Yet when a citizen dares to attend council and tell you what is wrong and what you should do or attend a business summit you put on and take the opportunity to complain about what is hurting their Commerce City businesses, you do NOTHING but tell them thank you, go sit down and shut up because the city "leaders" are so immature that none of them can take criticism. It will be a happy day when all of you are gone and we have real professional people on city council as our mayor and as a city manager. worried about unions? the solution is simple - hire a City manager who does not waste money on office remodels in a new building, shortly after arriving promote incompetent and inexperienced staff to high level positions and hire other inexperienced people for positions that he dreams up so that he doesn't actually have to do anything all day. Hire a City manager who has integrity and one that wouldn't cheat the tax payers out of 72,000 by LYING about his house sale in Arizona. Hire a City Manager who does not do and say discriminatory things that requires the City's legal staff to spend their time defending him and the City from Federal Lawsuits instead of actual City legal business. Hire a City Manager who would not pay a consultant thousands of dollars for a prototype ED Plan. No Flannery - No Union _ I think the staff (I am related to one by marriage and I live in the City)) is afraid that they are at the whims of this guy who obviously to the staff at all levels has no idea what he is doing - that is on the rare occasions the staff (those employees who actually do something of value)sees or hears from him or one of his many other inexperienced or incompetent members of the MASSIVE City Manager Office staff. The truth hurts, but it is still the truth.
