It does not matter who decides to run for CC Mayor or even council. We want honest and good people who really care what happens to our city and not looking at getting themselves ahead for any political office or money. Nor, do they have to be of a particular race. The voters will decide who gets into office. These next four years of serving in office could be the roughest our city has even had to get through. We must build our economy and we must do something about the drain on social services. So, we need men and women who can put their battle boots on. If, you want to run for office, go ahead! The people will have their say and the winners will take their place. Illegal immigrants can not vote unless they fake it. We have less than 10% of the population that does actually vote.
I encourage all residents that are interested in running for office to just go for it. Let not go though another election cycle with the same old faces. Lets mix it up. New faces, new ideas.
Estelle,
I hear a lot of pointing out the issues, but no real solutions. I would LOVE to hear how you would solve the social issues you bring up.
Monday evening the Adams 14 BOE will be conducting a Special Meeting to vote on a District Resolution in Support of Senate Bill 11-126, In State Tuition for all Colorado High School Students. While the support of this resolution may cost me vote should I decide to seek reelection to the BOE this coming November I must stand firm on my conviction that no student should be hindered in any manner from a chance to further their education, I will vote YES on this resolution.
Cheo, you miss the point of writing a comment or an opinion on a blog. That, of allowing the reader to express or come up with their own opinion and/or solution as they see it. That's what makes us a democracy. Estelle
In 1787, the Thirteen States came together to write the American Constitution. Only, seven states sent delegates to the Convention of States. While in Europe, James Madison spent part of the winter before the convention "studying the Constitutions of ancient and modern confederacies and John Adams outlined the histories of the host of past states to find out the causes of their fall. History taught us there were three kinds of government - Monarchy, Aristocracy and Democracy." Aristotle said that to have a balanced government "each class in society must be given a check to protect its own interests." Every Democracy ended in class warfare between the rich and the poor. The same 10% of America's founding families still own 40% of American riches. Adams said, "There never was a democracy that did not commit suicide."
The delegates to the 1787 convention believed that "like every other state in history the American people would in time be without property." In the 2010 census, we are slowly losing our middle class and the majority of property and business owners to a majority of renters who pay a "use tax" and have birthright babies to get on social services. This is called - levelling. Democracy can not survive a two class system. Fifty-percent of the middle class can not support the other poor fifty-percent and the rich will not support any of us. What is so amazing is how much our forefathers did to try and keep us on the right path to Democracy and how much we are doing to bring about our own downfall. (The Making of the American Constitution, Merrill Jensen, Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin, 1961-64.)
A discussion is planned for Monday's Commerce City Council meeting regarding City Council's recommendation for the naming of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center. It has been reported that the proposed name would be something like the "Patricia S. Schroeder Visitor Center". City Council at their Monday, March 28, 2011 Council meeting requested staff to add this as a discussion item for the April 4, 2011 meeting. According to the Gateway News Opinion Blog the question has come up regarding the idea of getting money for Tower Road in return for supporting the "Patricia S. Schroeder Visitor Center" naming idea. The discussion can be heard live on Monday via the Commerce City website video center
No to Pat's visitor center. NO WAY!
A very nice tribute for a wonderful young man! I really do hope someone will come forward to give this family some closure.
Money for Tower if CC supports the Pat visitor name.
I have no problem with it. Call it the Mickey Mouse visitor center if Disney would give us money!
I am surprised that Commerce City council would get into such a Political issue with the center at the arsenal. I thought council was suppose to be non partisan. I guess not?
Council nonpartisan? So they are a Democrat until they get to the council chambers for a city council meeting? SO STUPID IDEA! Just let them be who they are. We already see it in there decisions.
Call me different, but I would have a issue if we need to support any idea to get money. NOT RIGHT!
Also not right is naming the visitor center anything to do with Patricia Schroeder.
I suggest the center should be named the Ronald Regan Visitor Center!
I vote for “the Teflon” visitor center at the RMA!
reciprocity is the foundation of the political world.
Boy! I guess so Pro2.0! I guess so
Pat Schroeder and Wayne Allard were the original cosponsors of the 1992 bill to authorize the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge.
Why not name it after both of them in the spirit of bipartisan cooperation?
City council is worthless, They don't listen to voting CC citizens. Most only try to please former denver mayor and his agenda.
Great Council Meeting. Good to see council getting back to their roots of fighting with each other.
great NO money for Tower!?
EVERYONE knows that Dinner Talk is not REAL decisions being made!
I vote for calling the visitor center Jeanette Lewis visitor center.
She has done so much for Adams #14, making it the best school district in all of Colorado.
I am on TEAM TRACEY! Jim is mean!
Tonight is a preview of 2012 HD 32 battle, Snyder v. Moreno
Should be good!
why is Buffalo Run Golf Course exempt from the smoking ban? I thought that as the jewel of Commerce City?
Got to love all of our wonderful politicians and politcian wannabes in commerce city trying to impress everyone with who has the most local history with the arsenal. Because we all know being a politican in good ole cc-town is all about them! God damn we need some new good people to run for some of these positions!
We really need to pay Commerce City council more then clown wages. Right now are we are attracting are clowns!
Watching Commerce City council in action last night was embarrsing. Really think the residents should hold elected officials to a higher standard.
Commerce city council has a lot of addicts to the limelight. When did politics become all about me, me, me? Or has Commerce City always been this way?
Same can be said for school board too.
Yep. CC council love the lime light but hate the sun light.
Hey Gateway,
Any truth to rumor that big hotel chain might be coming to Prairie Gateway in very near future?
I would like to personally shake the hands of any of the Commerce City Coucil Members who opposed this intrusive smoking ban. I have lived in the city for more then a minute and can not remeber a more invasion of privacy law ever.
Local government as well as all government need to STOP telling us how to live our lives.
Buddy,
Maybe you should get off the cancer sticks and think about others, like maybe the kids your effecting with your second hand smoke. Funny how people only get upset with the gov. When it effects them personally.
I love how some CC Council members have alibis for not being about the meetings in DC
Nothing at the RMA should be named after anyone. It is too big of a deal for a personal agenda, period
After listening to Tracey, I am confused. is commerce city in a "Deal" with the federal level for a naming of the visitor center?
Whole thing is very shady.
Regarding the naming of the visitor center at the Federal Reservation (Rocky Mt. Arsenal), A Commerce City recommendation would go A LONG WAY!
Only way a have a "recommendation" of the naming of the visitor center is by ways of Commerce City Council.
If Council decides to to listen to the citizens, which I would like to remind you is their job description, is entirely up to them.
The rumor that there is a pay to play for the naming of the visitor center at the RMA is purely false.
I dont care pro city! deal or no deal, pay to play.
NO NAME SHOULD BE PUT ON ANYTHING AT THE Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge
Did I just miss something or did mayor pro tem snyder just say she got phone calls from citizens about deal for name support for Arsenal visitor center?
I bet perlmutter is just thrilled with commerce city! Got to wonder how hard he will fight for us in the future?
The antics of jim benson against tracey snyder are one of the many reasons why commerce city is the laughing stock of the Denver metro area
Don't the people who smoke pay taxes on those cigarettes? And so shouldn't they have the right to at least smoke in a PUBLIC park!?
I do not think there is any proof that anyone is affected by second hand smoke outside!
Give me a break!
Just got my Commerce City recreation guide in the mail today. Since the new smoking ban on city property was passed last night with the big exception of Buffalo Run Golf Course, I was very surprised to see right there on page three the city promoting children to attend programs at the golf course this summer. Guess smoke hurts children at Pioneer Park but doesn't hurt children at the Buffalo Run Golf Course. More backwards logic from dumb old Commerce City. They can't get anything right ever I'm tellin ya.
I found this on the Amtrak Website under the Route Guide:
"Commerce City is a northern suburb of Denver known for greyhound racing and oil refining. Among the first establishments in Commerce City, founded in 1859, were cemeteries. Dick’s Sporting Goods Park is home to the Colorado Rapids major league soccer club."
Not very flattering. Not to mention not even true, since we no longer have greyhound racing anymore. Also, the date is wrong, isn't it?
It is on page 7 of this link:

Lionel,
I actually came across this earlier this year in a print version. I sent it to someone at Commerce City to take a look at and take some action about getting it possibly changed. I do think it has been changed from the version I first saw.
I will send it again to the new staff in charge of marketing. But, I think this might be the final version of it.
Thanks for your comment.
So Tracy ran for the State House a Republican last election - or was it as a Democrat - I can't remember - I just know she is trying the other side of the aisle this time. So Tracey after 4 years on Council you ran for the State House and lost miserably so you had to stay on City Council and now that you are term limited from City Council time to run for the State House again but for the other party - kind of sounds like you don't care who or what you represent just as long as you have the spot light.
Newsflash - The Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Area is a FEDERAL facility - CC has no jurisdiction whatsoever on what they do or don't call it - I also highly doubt that our City Council or City Manager or any of his right hand flunkies are so well connected that the Feds CARE what commerce City thinks.
Confused after listening to Tracey Snyder - however could that be?
Now that it seams we are are aware that our council are NOT representing the people, we need to get rid of them.
The people in the north need to either
1. become involved and aware of commerce city leadership.
or
2. Form a new city and install it's own government.

CC really puts Perlmutter in a tough position. You all should understand that these federal guys are constantly in campaign mode. The only have a 2 year term! What CC did by this talk about all these shady deals that are not even true. Really puts Perlmutter in a tough position. Thanks a lot CC!
Just a fact for all of you who think you know the history of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.
It was U.S. Representative Pat Schroeder who proposes accelerated cleanup of the Arsenal and conversion to a national wildlife refuge
Great Core Comments!
Lets get some money for Tower and then we can name it Pats Park!
Get money for transportation (like Tower) and rename Tower Road to Schroeder Road
The Commerce City’s General Fund revenue is not adequate to fund City operations and all the needed
capital improvements, which includes transportation improvements.
Therefore, trade-offs will need to be discussed in the future as part of the fiscal policies and strategies
presentation.
I suggest we get rid of Pro City 2.0 who is obviously a City employee and about a half a dozen other extremely high paid positions added by Flannery that weren't needed when things were booming so they for sure aren't needed now! I would estimate close to one million a year in salaries benefits and car allowances for his highly uneducated (in public administration), inexperienced and incompetent recent (last 4 years) Mc Broom has education and experience at least - new hires in the City Manager's Office. This would pay for some needed capital improvements wouldn't it? I bet you could build a lot of trails, parks or road or library/Recreation Center for a million a year.
so we have no gov. lock out and now no fishing. I say CC jumped the gun.
Besides, why couldn't the fed employees just suck up one day and volunteer a little bit of time. It was fishing for kids, not like a really working?
Take and take, no giving?

The 2011 Derby Daze celebration will be held Saturday, June 11. Save the Date!
Mugsy's is BACKKKKKK!
Mugsy's new location is 7191 Holly Street!
A real Statistic -
Place of birth - For Commerce City
Hispanic or Latino population - Foreign Born is 37%
Born in Colorado is 49%
Born in another US state is 14%
At this last city council meeting, it was interesting to watch the frustration of council members when they went to Washington, D.C. to request funding for an on-ramp for E-470 and Tower Rd. As, we have a falling economy, CC is sort of at the mercy of our Congressional representatives. Those that we voted into office at the Federal levels. Ms. Snyder was frustrated and angry because she was not at that meeting and received no information on what was said. Mr. Mc Eldowney did not go to Washington, D.C. and was frustrated as he was given no communication on the trip. The City Manager's office decided to take a month to issue the report on this meeting. Congressional elected officials wanted to rename the RMA Wildlife Center, which, they can legally do. It is interesting to see how emotional city council members get over their representative rights being stepped on. All, I can say, is welcome to the citizen level of frustration of doing business here in CC with nothing to say on important renaming matters (Victory Crossing.) and the giving out of bonus money and new home mortgages interest and payment free for four years. Now, City Council is experiencing the citizen's frustration. This is what happens when elected representatives leave the sovereignty of the people's wishes far behind the oath of office at any level.
In CC, we have as many Prairie Dogs as we have people. If, there is any kind of plague, we could lose thousands of animals on the arsenal and we know from the Middle Ages that this can be passed on to people and family pets. We are ripe for another Plague. We have been forewarned and must do something to control these populations of rodents, no matter how cute they may look.
Estelle,
I will admit I do disagree with a lot you say. But, your last comment made a lot of sense. I honestly do notbthink my entire block makes in one year what the Commerce City Council gave to the City manager for a mystery loss.
Estelle, Are you running for council? I'm hoping you're the replacement for Benson.

From Commerce City ED:
Our director is heading to the Airport Cities Conference in the morning - http://www.globalairportcities.com/about-airport-cities-20112
Where is there a airport in Commerce City? Anyone?
Got to hear last weeks council meeting on line.
First, thank you Dustin for starting this and thank you to the city for continuing this idea. Really help to hear the actual word of city council instead of someone trying to interpret in their own words, which always gets twisted somehow.
The meeting last week was pretty exciting. Why is it whenever the mayor leaves town the council acts like a bunch of kids?
I hope that more people will rum for commerce city council in november we have a lot of positions that will need to be filled.
Council was acting up last week, because they don't get food! Now that they are bring food back to them they will be less fussy.
Mayor being gone has nothing to do with Commerce City Council in-fighting. They have done plenty of this in the past with the mayor present.
Hey Commish Alice,
Your response is ridiculous. You only are responsible for 33% of the reason why your family got county jobs?
Nancy, Commerce City
I would hate to think the Grand Marshal of the Commerce City Parade would be chosen because of political reasons! They should have gotten the Public Input like they have in the past years.
Sad.
Pres. Lewis of Adams Fourteen School District to run for Mayor in November?
Why would members of Commerce City's council be on facebook during the city council? Please people pretend to pay attention ok.
Commerce City council meeting tonight says we don't have money, why don't we have money? Where is all the money going? Where has all the money gone? Somebody needs to be getting some answers really soon here. Gateway News, can you ask about the city's money? We used to have money in reserves. Where did it go?
In Commerce City there are a number of position on city council that are coming up:
Ward 3 and 4 (Tracey and Jim) Jim can run again and most likely he will and then 2 at large positions (Tony and Kathy) both are term limited.
Also, Mayor is term limited.
So if you really want to make a difference in Commerce City. I would encourage anyone to think about running for one of these positions.
Also, have a question about what it is like to be a mayor or council member? Contact your council member in your area or one of the 5 at large current council. Their information can be found on the city's website.
It is an important position and we need good leaders.
Good Info. pro city. Lets get some good people out to run! Not the same old players. It is NOT impressive to be voted into office (City or School or Water Board) by your friends and family. Lets push this city into a real city where the best person is chosen for the job!
Cheo,
Your right on. Commerce City has a long history of people getting into office because of their friends and mostly family. It really is a shame. Not at all what elections are suppose to be about. But yet here we are. City has a history of low election turn out and the same old tiresome individuals with the most friends and family to run it.
No one votes in CC because council does not speak Spanish.
Sorry but true.
Well!
I guess the cat is out of the bag on how to become elected in Good Ole CC.
Announce your going to run. Tell your friends and family to vote for you and your in!
Most Important ingredient, you have to be a townie.
Hello Mayor Protem Tracey Snyder - please do not ever speak on behalf of the citizens of the northern range again. I watched you last night and you do not represent people in the northern range and I wonder if you represent the people in the southern area either most days. And start doing the right thing, not the easy thing. Please take a drive around your city, the whole city and be honest about what people are having to deal with in their own lives every day because they live in Commerce City. Look at reality, not your jaded view of happy slappy lala land that everyone at the Civic Ctr seems to live in. Reality, murder, no street lights, no retail, no jobs, no hope.
My opinion: Everything that Jeannette Lewis gets involved in turns ugly and is full of controversy. Once again she wormed her way into the Memorial Day Parade. Shameful and self serving. She's already ruined the school district and now she's probably getting ready to run for city council so she can ruin the city too!
I say any resident that would rum for the mayor position will be good. I honestly do not know anyone who s even talking about running.
We need residents to start getting interesting in the future of their city.
This is a call out to all citizens, you can run for Commerce City Council positions. It does have a payment, it is not much but you have the chance to make a difference in your city's future.
The memorial day parade will NEVER be in the northern range. It make NO Sense what so ever!
So I learned that the people who live in the newlands by the golf course (the city money pit) are were uppity!
Too Funny that Alice Nichol in her response has to address: “my son-in-law,” “my mother,” “My cousin,” “my husband,” and “my cousins.”
A true Adams Family
Hey anonymous - you are right the uppity people who live around the golf course (that is a money pit that can't cover it's own cost) that the rest of us have to pay for the uppities to play on. I think everyone will find it interesting that I have heard from a credible source in the City Managers office that the person behind all the uppity activities lives in that area and is also a hi level staff in the City Manager Office (Deputy Manager) I guess the same uppity one that likes to drive his porsche to work we the tax payers bought for him. So development is OK as long as the uppities in the City Offices approve of it for their neighborhood and it is good for their property values (property value - joke of course) - this City could not get more corrupt and the City Council sits by and does nothing to restore credibility in the Manager's Office
The elitist from Commerce City Buffalo Chip Golf Course sound pretty stupid at council complaining about such petty crap when the core citizens are at the same meeting complaining about real issues like safe street lighting.
What a joke.
It is NOT Commerce City Buffalo Chip Golf.
It is the Commerce City Buffalo Run Golf Course.
Please call it by its correct name!
The elitism of the Greens is Commerce City has always been there, no one ever took noticed.
What they do not understand is that they should be happy that someone wants to build.
Get off your high horses and be thankful.
Any builder has the right to build what they want as long as the follow the rules.
The RULES, not some PREFERENCE!
That is the way it is!
About Senate Bill 11-233
Lets all just calm down for a second and take a look at what this could mean. Lets not just all jump the gun so quickly. Like what the small group had you all do during the last mayoral election with NASCAR.
This could be our second chance to grow that part of the city. If we could capture those gambler dollars it could be good for all of us.
At least lets hear it out. What do we have to be afraid of? People coming to Commerce City to spend money? What is so bad about that? Ask yourself, do we want to grow as a city or not?
I take offense of the surrounding CC golf course communities being called "elitist". All we want is for some standards. There is nothing wrong with a developing part of a city to have required standards in place. We are building for the first time in this area, it is not like we are telling a established area to change. We are simply trying to get it right the first time.
Maybe, if the city had some theme standards we would have a better looking Reunion Shopping area.
Why does the PON group have to have all of the official titles of the leadership. The president is Kathy Teter (Commerce City Council Member).
Is she representing this as a official Commerce City Council member capacity?
If not I think they should remove that part.
At least when Tracey was against the Benson seat tax she was there as a citizen and not in a Commerce City Council capacity.
SB 11-233 is a win-win for everyone. It will bring in revenue for city and helps out Education. why so much resistance?
PON - Protect Our Neighborhoods is NOT against the bill, they are dedicated to ensuring that casino gaming including slot machines, video lottery/keno machines, instant racing machines, poker parlors and Native American casinos is not extended beyond the three mountain towns where it is currently allowed without a prior vote of the neighborhoods that will be impacted.
Find out what a group is really about before you all start spouting off.
Don't really care about the actual bill. What I Care about is that it is basically a bill to be a constitutional dodge, and that my friends is not right.
SB11-233 would only benefit Mile High Racing and Entertainment. It will hurt the gambling mountain ventures.
It is kinda like the Jim Benson Seat tax that only benefited the Boys and Girls Club. Not fair and will most likely be killed
The Video Lottery Terminals bill would make it so Commerce City would have tons of unwanted traffic, tearing up our streets and causing chaos. And we all know where the real related tax revenue will go, thats right, DENVER, they will come and gamble then take off to Stapleton to spend their winnings. since Commerce City has no real place to do anything. Have we not learned our lesson from the Rapids stadium yet? A major headache and what does Commerce City get? NOTHING!
Lets call a spade a spade. "Bill 11-233 is nothing more then gaming interests hoping to exploit the financial desperation of well-meaning legislators." -Post
voters already said no to putting VLT slot machines at racetracks back in 2003 by a landslide.
I wish we could get this kind of a interest in local politics!
Hey pro city, this is about local politics.
I am tired of Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek getting all the revenue from gambling. Share with some other cities, like us in Commerce City.
I disagree that all will go to Denver to spend their winnings. I say lets take this opportunity to re-develop the Mile High Racing area. Maybe even turn the old Malibu event center in to a Boys and Girls club.
When is the big announcment about the Boys and Girls club?
I would like to comment about some of the things I have read on this blog about Tracey Snyder. Having known her for many years, I believe that I can speak about about her knowledgeably. Tracey has lived in the City her whole life. Many of us know that she is totally dedicated to taking care of the City. We seniors know that she cares about us very much. The meetings she runs go very well.
Yes, she was upset about the situation that happened in DC with the naming of the Refuge being discussed without her. She was right to be upset! The Arnsenal should remain named as it is! The fact that she stood up for the history of our town should be something we are all grateful for! Someone had to! It was obvious that she did not know what went on in DC with the DeGette meeting.
After breaking her back and almost dying, she came right back. Anyone who knows her knows she is in almost constant pain. But that doesnt stop her! I say good for her, and I hope she does keep going and wins the House seat! We someone just like her in there for the people of our City! Go Tracey!
Don’t Forget…
Officers and Victim Advocates will be at the Belle Creek McDonald’s this Saturday for “Coffee with a Cop”. We will be on site from 8am to 10am to answer any questions you might have. Don’t have anything specific to ask? Come enjoy a coffee with us and hear about the upcoming events for 2011.
Tracey has done an amazing job with her city council duties. You all need to remember that she has to constantly deal with Jim Benson. I would challenge any of you to do this impossible task without losing your cool every once in a while.
Heard rumor that HD 32 might be a Commerce City Candidate Fight. Snyder v. Moreno in 2012. Snyder has already said she was going to run, good for her! Moreno's ward 1 seat is not up until 2013 which means he would have to bail on CC one year prior to his term ending. I don't see this happening, he is too young and has plenty of time. CO HD 32 seat comes up every 2 years. I can see him in it, just not in 2012.
When is the big announcement about the Boys and Girls club?
GREAT QUESTION! We have only been waiting decades for this answer!
I have to agree with "In The Know"-
I have also heard rumor that Dominic Moreno may run against Tracey Snyder for the House District seat. Tracey is term limited and has worked really hard. Dominic is in his first couple years of his first term. He needs to finish his committment to the City that elected him, and gain some experience! I agree that he could be at the State eventually, but now is not his time.
Tracey Synder is one of the most beloved persons in Commerce City. She has done a consistant and excellent job. She is even tempered, well versed on every issue and has worked hard for the people of Commerce City. No matter what, she builds consensus and stands up for what she thinks is right for the people.
Moreno and Snyder can fight it out all they want in the election - it is not likely either would actually be elected, especially Tracy, Moreno in time maybe. Remember that running and winning are two different things.
I see Jeanette Lewis is trying to get herself another award! She continues her self serving, shameless self promotion. Doesn't she know that everyone knows she destroyed school dist 14?
Tracey is well spoken and has a very good handle on the issues both locally and regionally. Not to mention she would be great for giving Commerce City a voice in the House. I 100% support Tracey as the House District 32 seat.
Go Tracey, go Tracey, go Tracey .........
Dustin,
that photo of reunion is frickin awesome! I want it!
Hey Gateway, I would like you to find out if this is true.
I heard that Ms Snyder tried to get our state rep, Casso, to assist her with a special federal program that is available to help low income students.
Instead of cooperating I understand he was extremely rude & unprofessional in his response. Please advise us of the facts in this matter.
Elitist is the city manager of Commerce City and all his enablers, the mayor and city attorney and city council.
Interesting, I found Casso to be very condescending when I hear him speak. It would not surprise me that he is rude to Tracey
So, Commerce City is really going to give Carl's Jr. a business incentive?
Really?
To common sense,
The city can not discriminate when giving out ED incentives. It does not matter if they are a mom and pop operation or a national chain. They all have to be treated equally.
Cant wait until the GOP takes back CO HD 32 in '12!
Maybe Ed Casso was rude to "Ms Snyder" because she was asking for a fed program! Ed Casso is our state rep. NOT our fed rep. If "Ms Snyder" wanted a federal program maybe she should have asked Ed Perlmutter our fed rep. when she was in Washington. Maybe at that secret Dinner she knows nothing about!
New Brighton Adult Recreation Center? Come on CC, we can beat Brighton!
I would imagine that Ms Snyder is VERY well aware of who needs to be contacted referencing help for special programs.
If she contacted Casso, I have no doubt he would be the person she needed to enlist.
I also found Mr Casso less then helpful and rarely around to talk to.
Please Gateway let us know if this happened and the details.
Actually I spoke to Tracey- Ms Snyder- about this issue after I saw this blog. You are wrong-she is working on something that has a potential to be a great thing for the kids of Commerce City and Thornton! She said that since she was familiar with the schools in Commerce City, but not as much in Thornton, and Ed Casso is from Thornton(he is, after all, supposed to represent House District 32 which includes both cities) she thought she would ask him to assist her in finding out which schools in that area could also benefit from this. He was incredibly rude to her! I actually saw the texts messages he sent her! Very horrible that she would be treated so badly by our State Representative! It is unprofessional and downright wrong! So you see it had nothing to do with Washington or who is our Federal representative (and I think after 8 years on Council Tracey knows who to ask for what)!
Ed Casso had to be sensored by Terrance Carroll last year for his bad behavior at the State- and now he is treating our Mayor Pro Tem badly as well! Shame on Ed Casso!!
Not at all shocked that Ed was nasty to Tracey! He has been that way towards her for years now! Probably because he knows he didnt deserve to win, and that she has more heart for the people than he ever did or will!
I remember Casso being mean to Snyder when she first ran. He wrote a letter about how he was much more qualified then her.
Maybe Mr. Casso is more qualified then Tracey Snyder. This is not a little local TOWNIE Commerce City election we are talking about. It is not get your friends and families together to vote for you. It is based on what you really stand for and then the entire anonymous population makes a decision on the given information. DAY and NIGHT from a Commerce City Election!
Too bad about Tracey and Ed.
Ed being rude is nothing new. They don't call him Ed Ca**hole for nothing.
I hear that you have to be a "townie" to run for a Commerce City elected position. Well, our current mayor Paul Natale is NOT a townie!
No Natale is not a Townie, he was just supported by the city's biggest Townie Reba Drotar.
Tracey, like many past Council members really just want a high profile "job" that they can get elected to because they don't have the education, experience, skills or abilities to get one any other way. Most of them sadly find out that Council pays very little as it should because all they really have to do is show up on Monday night and approve the recommendations of the staff that at one time (prior to Flannery)had the appropriate knowledge, skills , abilities and experience appropriate to make recommendations. The State House pays about $35,000 for 3 months work - not bad if you can get it but you have to spend all your time kissing butts for the next election cycle. My suggestion for Tracey is to get a job that pays a little more and leave politics above City Council to those with some of the needed skills, education. experience and abilities.
I think that your comments show how little you know about what goes on with Council! There is a heck of alot more you have to do than just attend Monday night meetings! Please! Have you ever listened to the "reports" section of the Council meetings where each one of them tells about everything they did the week before? They make little money for a whole lot of work, so clearly they must not be in it for the money!
As for Tracey Snyder, who is a single mother, she has a full time job in addition to her Council position, has a degree and is educated. You obviously dont know a thing about her. She really is a good person who loves this town. We would be lucky to have her at the State House!
Archer, If you have ever tried to have a conversation with Casso, you would know right away he is not better qualified, in fact he is not qualified.
He got support from the dem party specifically Val Vigil.
He was believed to be the new rising star.
Instead he has not represented anyone, in fact he has embarrassed himself and his family.
He is leaving the state house and the party is most likely releaved.
The only thing Janette Lewis should have named for her is a port-a-potty at one of our community parks because that structure is filled with the same thing she is. This is one of the meanest, cut throats there is. She has totally forgotten about the children of the community that she was elected to advocate for. Mrs. Lewis has dropped the students of the community by the wayside in effort to win friends and influence people, but if you’re not someone of standing or if you’re not being paid by Adams Dist. 14 to be her “Yes” man, she could care less about you or your children no matter how concerned you are about an issue. She will throw you under a bus in the blink of an eye if you disagree with her or undermine her authority. She has ruined our school dist. But thank God, she’s finally on her way out! There may be a light at the end of the tunnel.
I am shocked that half of you even know who Ed Casso even is? I have been to a Casso open house and have only seen maybe 8 people there, and that was have doing a personal phone call to ALL of the Democrats to attend.
Doesn't matter Tracey and the GOP are taking it n 2012!
Ahhhhh, you might want to double check what political party Tracey Snyder is on these days.
how bad could Janette Lewis be? Didn't the name a building after her?
So I assume that we will have lots of candidates running for council positions in November with all of your opinions out here, right?
poor Tracey,
well if your in politics first rule is you need thick skin.
AMEN TO THAT, Thick Skin indeed!
Nice, Commerce City ED twitter a article that says: This article has expired, may be is not yet published, or you are not authorised to view this resource.
Well looks like our council and their wisdom did take us out of the picture when they said no to China.
Big article in the Post today."Wooing China"
"Local mayors & business leaders are promoting a plan that seeks to increase Chinese investment in Colorado"....initiative being put together by 40 member metro mayors caucus "
That headline should have been about CC, but our council had no vision. Mayor Natale started this and now we are left out!!
Monday night Council Meetings are all that is required - the other "stuff" is fluff and is optional - sorry but it is true, Tracey has a degree in what from where, please don't embarass her further by saying DeVry or Westwood or Phoenix or College America.....if she has a real degree in a real subject from a real college and is as smart as you say then she doesn't need Council or the State House to make her feel important or make extra money - she can go get that hi profile job that she wants - oh by the way what is her job that she got with her degree that requires her level of intelligence - and what does it pay ( a range for the type of job will do)?
You are really critcal of someone who spends a lot of time trying to represent the city in a professional way. You sit behind the keyboard doing what?? What is your degree?
How much do you make?
Just because Tracey Snyder wants to continue her political career, doesn't mean she is doing it for your reasons.
Gateway, could you please get a copy of the text messages between Casso and Snyder?
I would like to see the real stuff!!
Yes GN PLEASE get those Casso/Snyder text messages. I just read the Ed Ca**shole Comment and found it very very very very entertaining!
So true on so many levels!
Anonymous - great response to my questions about Tracey's qualifications - I see that you did not answer any of my questions, just as I suspected would happen.
I do not put a lot of emphasis on educational degrees. Lets all remember that both Bush and Obama are products of "Ivy League" schooling.
I will judge My candidate on how they carry themselves and a track record of honesty and integrity.
I do not know Tracey Snyder well enough to know what her education background is.
I do know that she has worked hard and has been approachable, loves this city and wants the best for it.
I also know that Mr Casso was/is a substitue teacher. He became so full of himself, that he ruined his marrage while being a rep.
He does not respond to phone calls, never shows up at anything (even when he says he will).
So you, tell me who is better qualified. It isn't always about education!!!
Great Discussion. I for one have personally experience of Casso not getting back to me on a issue that was important to me.
I would like to tell anyone who has an idea of running for any elected office. Remember you are supposed to be the voice of the people who voted for you. Not getting into office and pushing your own agenda and your own personal ideas.
I Disagree. Of Course you need to represent the people, but it is virtually impossible to make everyone happy. You need to have the character to make the good decisions for the greater good.
For House 32, Tracey would make a Great Candidate.
snyder vs. hoopes?
i take snyder anyday
I agree! Karl Hoopes is a nice enough guy but hasnt served even one minute on anything. He has literally zero experience. I have to say I am on board with Team Tracey! Look at everything she has been through, and yet she still goes on! Go Tracey!!
I have been watching these discussions on the blog and I think I can give a unique perpective on something I know about Tracey Snyder. Years ago I was suffering with terrible allergies. I was refered to an allergist specialty group that are quite good. I ended up having to take a whole bunch of allergy tests to find out what I was allergic to, and then I had to take shots. Who did my tests and then gave me my shots for months afterwards? None other than our own Tracey Snyder! Dont tell me that she isnt educated when a group of five doctors trust her to do tests and give shots that if arent done correctly can potentially cause you a severe reaction and even kill you! She was always kind and gentle, and very knowledgeable. Just like she is with our city. Tracey was in charge of the room where the shots are made, and she mixed thousands of shots that went to five offices. Some serious stuff!
Whenever she does something she goes all out! I say the people who are talking negatively meet her in person and find out what a great girl she really is!
I may not know Tracey as well as some of you do. But I do know that she will go the extra mile when it is something important. I find her to be attentive to details and most importantly be a listener. She is will to take on a issue no matter how difficult it is.
I am proud that she will be running for the House in 2012.
Jeanette Lewis did not have a building named after her. She and another person had a wing of a samll complex named after them. The persons doing the naming were the contractors who built the buildings. Lewis and the other person were board members who made the deals with the contractors to build the buildings. Unethical? A lot of people thought so.
Gateway-
What exactally did Casso say to Tracey?
She is a citizen in his district regards of her political position.
I'd like to know what was said.
I would LOVE to see those text messages that everyone is talking about.
FYI ya all,
It takes more then a pretty face to be a real politician like a Colorado House Representative.
You have to be articulate. You have to have a vast knowledge on a array of issues. It is not a townie election where you get your family and friends to vote for you and you bask in the limelight for 8 years.
Hey PRO CA**HOLE,
First off, you need to listen to our recent council meetings, the ones where Tracey Snyder is running them because our mayor is out of town. She runs them very smoothly and she is VERY well spoken.
And as far as a "vast" knowledge of the issues. DO you even know what a city council members has to deal with. They are actually in the trenches dealing with the people on a personally level. Tracey Snyder had to deal with Pit Bulls, Gambling, Major Development Decisions, Controversy with past and current city managers, Budgets in times of Good and in times of Bad. Hands down, Tracey Snyder has more "vast" knowledge then Ed Casso any day.
Whew, I feel better.
GN- love the earth day picture, and get those text messages, everyone I talk to is dying to see them.
Whatever! pro-casso
Tracey is very articulate and also happens to be pretty. What the hell has casso ever done for commerce city.
this city is proud to have Tracey as a HD32 candidate.
if she can get in, maybe for once it can be commerce city's time at the state level.
screw you CASSO LOVER,
Where do you get off being mean to Tracey Snyder. Have you even talked to her? She is a great political leader and has many great attributes. She has over come many obstacles both personal and politically.I am 100% in support of Tracey Snyder as the 2012 House District 32 Representative.
Pro Casso,
Have you ever heard him talk. He is not articulate. Go to the video archieves in the Gateway. He can't speak.
He never comes to anythink and has embarrassed his own party.
You should research before you make stupid statements. Sounds to me like you have something against Snyder, rather than have reason to support Casso.
I'd rather have Snyder anyday. Pretty is not the issue, representation and responding to the voters is!!
Anyone else notice the Gateways News is ignoring our requests to research the Casso text messages with Snyder?
If this involved the city manager, or dep managers, they would be right on it.
I call this selective reporting.
The Gateway News has contacted Tracey Snyder and left a message regarding the Ed Casso text messages.
As soon as we have the information we will release it.
I love the that no one knows if Tracey is running as a Democrat or Republican.
I remember Tracey saying she is now a Democrat. But she did run as a Republican against Ed Casso years ago?
democrat - republican
tomato - tomatoe
does it really matter?
why is there so much talk about an election that is not going to happen until next year?
why are we not talking about the city election that is happening in nov.?
I think it is because snder announced already.
No one has annouced for the Commerce City election. just a bunch of rumors.
Gina, I agree, but having said that, I sure hope we get some competent people running.
New faces, without the old ties, so we can not worry about the nepotism and "connections".
Please people, aren't there some business minded, honest, no deals people who don't NEED the money to support themselves.
Running for state house is not the same as running for city council. The big difference is party. State rep candidates are nominated by their own party and then run in the general election where there are thousands of voters and major offices – president, governor, senator, etc. Political party is a big deal, like it or not. Snyder lost to Casso a few years ago because she was a Republican and he is a Democrat. Now she is a Democrat, too? That may not sit well with everyone in the Dem party, and these are the voters who will actually nominate the D candidate. Was she a Democrat in 2008? Did she sit out the Obama/Hillary campaign? Does she support Obama now? Does she support Obama’s health care plan? Is she pro-union, including public employees? Where does she stand on public schools and education reform? Does she have the support of other party loyalists in Adams County? These are the questions her “fellow Democrats” will want answered. If he decides not to run again, it will be an open seat and there may be several Democratic candidates!
I am writing this to inform you of a new policy Community Leadership Academy has implemented. According to the letter sent home, it states that if any student is caught chewing gum in school they will be fined $2.00. If the student DOES NOT pay the fine they will NOT be allowed back into school until the $2.00 is paid.
Now as a parent of two children that go to CLA... I am outraged that they are willing to deny my kids an education over $2.00! I understand that they have to enforce certain rules, but I think this is taking it to far! It seems to me that they could keep the child after school or during recess to clean gum off desks or the floors or something else less extreme!
My 8th grade student was caught chewing gum yesterday on the 19th, however he was allowed back to school today. He was told that if he does not bring the money to school tomorrow on the 21st, they will NOT allow him back into school!
From my understanding, CLA has already lost one student to this rule! I guess we will see tomorrow if It becomes two! I refuse to pay, and will not stand for this!!
I have contacted CLA and asked them about the new "Gum Rules"...
We will report as soon as we get more information about this.
Adams County DA Quick decided to request the appointment of a special prosecutor for Alice Nichol case...

Anonymous - Finally some intelligent thoughts on Snyder. you don't just switch parties unless all you care about is getting elected. A Republican is very unlikely to win that seat and the Dem party is very unlikely to support her if she ran as a Republican - she has no credibility with them regardless of how nice or smart she is (and I believe she is). this is real politics not non party affiliated City Council in the old little town of CC ( nice but little) - sorry.
Maybe someone should ask Tracey Snyder why she changed parties? Novel thought! Perhaps she has a good reason why she made that decision. I doubt that she did it to get elected. Everyone knows the tide swings one way and then swings the other. Changing parties is no guarantee of being elected. The Democrats should consider themselves lucky to have her. If they dont get behind her just because she was once a Republican than they are fools! She is a good leader! I believe she is one of the few for "all" of the people-regardless of what party they belong to!
The republican party is known for not being supportive in Adams county of those running for office there.
I think they must believe there is little chance to win, so they invest their dollars elsewhere.
I can imagine that could cause a ripple effect of disenchantment for many in their own party.
***I am not saying this is what happened to Snyder, I have no knowlege of her situation.
I think the reason Snyder changed parties is obvious - she couldn't get electded as republican so she switched parties - it is about her not you or any of us - she will be or do whatefver gets her elected - why can't you see that?
I agree with you completely. Tracey Snyder was a great candidate. She out debated Ed Casso, out walked him, just plain ole out worked him! And she didnt just go away after one loss- she ran for her seat right after and kept right on going. Then she was appointed Mayor Pro Tem and has done a great job! She has spirit and a will to serve. Good for her!
heard cc is releasing citizen survey results, when was there a survey done?
Everyone if you MISSED the Commerce City Council meeting on the internet tonight, make sure you go back and listen on the city's website starting tomorrow or watch it on Channel 8. It is shocking, they actually know that it takes money to run a school district and that as population increases, demand for service also increases. BRILLIANT! Also, Commerce City stop trying, Brighton has us covered, retail, shopping, medical, library, new swimming pool, rec center. Its ok, give it all the the city manager and the high paid staff. Don't worry about the residents anymore, its ok, we get it.
Hey Commerce City, don't worry about fixing the roads either, I heard there is going to be a citizen zip line right over to Brighton from the northern range.
Seriously Commerce City, what are you paying your city manager for? His staff tells you that you need a plan and alternative forms of funding? Where is his plan and where are his ideas? The city council and mayor are to vote approval or disapproval of the ideas, plans and work that the city manager puts together. How did that get so twisted around? Someone please pray tell what is the city manager being paid for? Other than smoking cigars at the Brown Palace Hotel and sitting in his home office or over at the Bison Grill?
To the Northern Resident on the I love CC site.
The lights that are out on 104th should be turned into askc3.gov
I believe they are replaced by the power company, not the city, but in any case put in the complaint to askc3
p.s. I refuse to put this on the I love site....otherwise it will just turn into another blog rather than a positive one.
Most comments very nice, of course a few snide ones!! gotta love those!
At least Mayor Pro Tem Tracey Snyder speaks her mind and is not a "yes" person. I vote for people who vote and speak as their own person, even if sometimes that means I don't agree with them. Also, I vote for people that have shown that they appreciate and care for the people they are suppose to represent. The rest is all just a flip of a coin.
I was just reading the comment from the parent of students at CLA. You must remember that the immoral people running that school will do anything to make money. The Executive Director is someone that has manipulated his way in and takes over leaving no stone unturned if there’s a possibility there may be money under it. Maybe the Executive Director of CLA and Dist. 14 BOD pres. are related because their motives are to get what they want and "To Hell with the Students” Most everyone else would have conscience enough to realize that their actions could really hurt people, or worse, leave the students of Dist. 14 without an education. (That is a crime)
don't worry too much about the CLA just act like you don't speak English and they won't enforce any rules.
SD14 is no different than commerce city code enforcement, police, and on and on.
The comments made about the costs to run the two schoold districts was a presentation by the....ready? School districts.
They were giving the numbers that it costs to provide education and comparisons to other districts as to how much they receive.
It was not the council or staffs info.
I am glad Brighton has retail. The businesses don't care where the shoppers come from the include the whole area near by.
I still believe we will get ours, but then I don't live with a negative attitude towards our city.

On that same note, development has to pay it's own way.
walmart story is so sad. unbelievable.
Yes, Wal-Mart story is sad. But lets remember innocent until proven guilty.
NWSS potentially coming to CC.
WOW! Imagine the possibilities?
Commerce City needs a royal wedding
I'm very proud of our Navy Seals under the direction of our Commander and Chief President Obama, for taking out one of the most notorious monsters around. Good riddance to you OBL you won't be missed.
