It does not matter who decides to run for CC Mayor or even council. We want honest and good people who really care what happens to our city and not looking at getting themselves ahead for any political office or money. Nor, do they have to be of a particular race. The voters will decide who gets into office. These next four years of serving in office could be the roughest our city has even had to get through. We must build our economy and we must do something about the drain on social services. So, we need men and women who can put their battle boots on. If, you want to run for office, go ahead! The people will have their say and the winners will take their place. Illegal immigrants can not vote unless they fake it. We have less than 10% of the population that does actually vote.

I encourage all residents that are interested in running for office to just go for it. Let not go though another election cycle with the same old faces. Lets mix it up. New faces, new ideas.

I hear a lot of pointing out the issues, but no real solutions. I would LOVE to hear how you would solve the social issues you bring up.

While the support of this resolution may cost me vote should I decide to seek reelection to the BOE this coming November I must stand firm on my conviction that no student should be hindered in any manner from a chance to further their education, I will vote YES on this resolution.

Cheo, you miss the point of writing a comment or an opinion on a blog. That, of allowing the reader to express or come up with their own opinion and/or solution as they see it. That's what makes us a democracy. Estelle

Estelle Remington said...

In 1787, the Thirteen States came together to write the American Constitution. Only, seven states sent delegates to the Convention of States. While in Europe, James Madison spent part of the winter before the convention "studying the Constitutions of ancient and modern confederacies and John Adams outlined the histories of the host of past states to find out the causes of their fall. History taught us there were three kinds of government - Monarchy, Aristocracy and Democracy." Aristotle said that to have a balanced government "each class in society must be given a check to protect its own interests." Every Democracy ended in class warfare between the rich and the poor. The same 10% of America's founding families still own 40% of American riches. Adams said, "There never was a democracy that did not commit suicide."

The delegates to the 1787 convention believed that "like every other state in history the American people would in time be without property." In the 2010 census, we are slowly losing our middle class and the majority of property and business owners to a majority of renters who pay a "use tax" and have birthright babies to get on social services. This is called - levelling. Democracy can not survive a two class system. Fifty-percent of the middle class can not support the other poor fifty-percent and the rich will not support any of us. What is so amazing is how much our forefathers did to try and keep us on the right path to Democracy and how much we are doing to bring about our own downfall. A discussion is planned for Monday's Commerce City Council meeting regarding City Council's recommendation for the naming of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center. It has been reported that the proposed name would be something like the "Patricia S. Schroeder Visitor Center". City Council at their Monday, March 28, 2011 Council meeting requested staff to add this as a discussion item for the April 4, 2011 meeting. According to the Gateway News Opinion Blog the question has come up regarding the idea of getting money for Tower Road in return for supporting the "Patricia S. Schroeder Visitor Center" naming idea. The discussion can be heard live on Monday via the Commerce City website video center

Just got my Commerce City recreation guide in the mail today. Since the new smoking ban on city property was passed last night with the big exception of Buffalo Run Golf Course, I was very surprised to see right there on page three the city promoting children to attend programs at the golf course this summer. Guess smoke hurts children at Pioneer Park but doesn't hurt children at the Buffalo Run Golf Course. More backwards logic from dumb old Commerce City. They can't get anything right ever I'm tellin ya.

I found this on the Amtrak Website under the Route Guide:

"Commerce City is a northern suburb of Denver known for greyhound racing and oil refining. Among the first establishments in Commerce City, founded in 1859, were cemeteries. Dick’s Sporting Goods Park is home to the Colorado Rapids major league soccer club."

Not very flattering. Not to mention not even true, since we no longer have greyhound racing anymore. Also, the date is wrong, isn't it?

It is on page 7 of this link:

I will send it again to the new staff in charge of marketing. But, I think this might be the final version of it.

Thanks for your comment.

So Tracy ran for the State House a Republican last election - or was it as a Democrat - I can't remember - I just know she is trying the other side of the aisle this time. So Tracey after 4 years on Council you ran for the State House and lost miserably so you had to stay on City Council and now that you are term limited from City Council time to run for the State House again but for the other party - kind of sounds like you don't care who or what you represent just as long as you have the spot light.

Anonymous said...

Newsflash - The Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Area is a FEDERAL facility - CC has no jurisdiction whatsoever on what they do or don't call it - I also highly doubt that our City Council or City Manager or any of his right hand flunkies are so well connected that the Feds CARE what commerce City thinks.

Anonymous said...

Confused after listening to Tracey Snyder - however could that be?

Now that it seams we are are aware that our council are NOT representing the people, we need to get rid of them.

The people in the north need to either
1. become involved and aware of commerce city leadership.
or
2. Form a new city and install it's own government.

I suggest we get rid of Pro City 2.0 who is obviously a City employee and about a half a dozen other extremely high paid positions added by Flannery that weren't needed when things were booming so they for sure aren't needed now! I would estimate close to one million a year in salaries benefits and car allowances for his highly uneducated (in public administration), inexperienced and incompetent recent (last 4 years) Mc Broom has education and experience at least - new hires in the City Manager's Office. This would pay for some needed capital improvements wouldn't it? I bet you could build a lot of trails, parks or road or library/Recreation Center for a million a year.

At this last city council meeting, it was interesting to watch the frustration of council members when they went to Washington, D.C. to request funding for an on-ramp for E-470 and Tower Rd. As, we have a falling economy, CC is sort of at the mercy of our Congressional representatives. Those that we voted into office at the Federal levels. Ms. Snyder was frustrated and angry because she was not at that meeting and received no information on what was said. Mr. Mc Eldowney did not go to Washington, D.C. and was frustrated as he was given no communication on the trip. The City Manager's office decided to take a month to issue the report on this meeting. Congressional elected officials wanted to rename the RMA Wildlife Center, which, they can legally do. It is interesting to see how emotional city council members get over their representative rights being stepped on. All, I can say, is welcome to the citizen level of frustration of doing business here in CC with nothing to say on important renaming matters (Victory Crossing.) and the giving out of bonus money and new home mortgages interest and payment free for four years. Now, City Council is experiencing the citizen's frustration. This is what happens when elected representatives leave the sovereignty of the people's wishes far behind the oath of office at any level.

In CC, we have as many Prairie Dogs as we have people. If, there is any kind of plague, we could lose thousands of animals on the arsenal and we know from the Middle Ages that this can be passed on to people and family pets. We are ripe for another Plague. We have been forewarned and must do something to control these populations of rodents, no matter how cute they may look.

In Commerce City there are a number of position on city council that are coming up:

Also, Mayor is term limited.
So if you really want to make a difference in Commerce City. I would encourage anyone to think about running for one of these positions.
Also, have a question about what it is like to be a mayor or council member? Contact your council member in your area or one of the 5 at large current council. Their information can be found on the city's website.
It is an important position and we need good leaders.

About Senate Bill 11-233

Lets all just calm down for a second and take a look at what this could mean. Lets not just all jump the gun so quickly. Like what the small group had you all do during the last mayoral election with NASCAR.

This could be our second chance to grow that part of the city. If we could capture those gambler dollars it could be good for all of us.

At least lets hear it out. What do we have to be afraid of? People coming to Commerce City to spend money? What is so bad about that? Ask yourself, do we want to grow as a city or not?

Buffalo Proud said...

I take offense of the surrounding CC golf course communities being called "elitist". All we want is for some standards. There is nothing wrong with a developing part of a city to have required standards in place. We are building for the first time in this area, it is not like we are telling a established area to change. We are simply trying to get it right the first time.

Maybe, if the city had some theme standards we would have a better looking Reunion Shopping area.

Tracey has lived in the City her whole life. Many of us know that she is totally dedicated to taking care of the City. We seniors know that she cares about us very much. The meetings she runs go very well.
Yes, she was upset about the situation that happened in DC with the naming of the Refuge being discussed without her. She was right to be upset! The Arnsenal should remain named as it is! The fact that she stood up for the history of our town should be something we are all grateful for! Someone had to! It was obvious that she did not know what went on in DC with the DeGette meeting.

After breaking her back and almost dying, she came right back. Anyone who knows her knows she is in almost constant pain. But that doesnt stop her! I say good for her, and I hope she does keep going and wins the House seat! We someone just like her in there for the people of our City! Go Tracey!

I heard that Ms Snyder tried to get our state rep, Casso, to assist her with a special federal program that is available to help low income students.
Instead of cooperating I understand he was extremely rude & unprofessional in his response. Please advise us of the facts in this matter.

To common sense,

The city can not discriminate when giving out ED incentives. It does not matter if they are a mom and pop operation or a national chain. They all have to be treated equally.

Maybe Ed Casso was rude to "Ms Snyder" because she was asking for a fed program! Ed Casso is our state rep. NOT our fed rep. If "Ms Snyder" wanted a federal program maybe she should have asked Ed Perlmutter our fed rep. when she was in Washington. Maybe at that secret Dinner she knows nothing about!

I would imagine that Ms Snyder is VERY well aware of who needs to be contacted referencing help for special programs.
If she contacted Casso, I have no doubt he would be the person she needed to enlist.
I also found Mr Casso less then helpful and rarely around to talk to.
Please Gateway let us know if this happened and the details.

Actually I spoke to Tracey- Ms Snyder- about this issue after I saw this blog. You are wrong-she is working on something that has a potential to be a great thing for the kids of Commerce City and Thornton! She said that since she was familiar with the schools in Commerce City, but not as much in Thornton, and Ed Casso is from Thornton(he is, after all, supposed to represent House District 32 which includes both cities) she thought she would ask him to assist her in finding out which schools in that area could also benefit from this. He was incredibly rude to her! I actually saw the texts messages he sent her! Very horrible that she would be treated so badly by our State Representative! It is unprofessional and downright wrong! So you see it had nothing to do with Washington or who is our Federal representative (and I think after 8 years on Council Tracey knows who to ask for what)!
Ed Casso had to be sensored by Terrance Carroll last year for his bad behavior at the State- and now he is treating our Mayor Pro Tem badly as well! Shame on Ed Casso!!

Anonymous said...

Not at all shocked that Ed was nasty to Tracey! He has been that way towards her for years now! Probably because he knows he didnt deserve to win, and that she has more heart for the people than he ever did or will!

gina, Commerce City said...

I remember Casso being mean to Snyder when she first ran. He wrote a letter about how he was much more qualified then her.

Maybe Mr. Casso is more qualified then Tracey Snyder. This is not a little local TOWNIE Commerce City election we are talking about. It is not get your friends and families together to vote for you. It is based on what you really stand for and then the entire anonymous population makes a decision on the given information. DAY and NIGHT from a Commerce City Election!

No Natale is not a Townie, he was just supported by the city's biggest Townie Reba Drotar.

Tracey, like many past Council members really just want a high profile "job" that they can get elected to because they don't have the education, experience, skills or abilities to get one any other way. Most of them sadly find out that Council pays very little as it should because all they really have to do is show up on Monday night and approve the recommendations of the staff that at one time (prior to Flannery)had the appropriate knowledge, skills , abilities and experience appropriate to make recommendations. The State House pays about $35,000 for 3 months work - not bad if you can get it but you have to spend all your time kissing butts for the next election cycle. My suggestion for Tracey is to get a job that pays a little more and leave politics above City Council to those with some of the needed skills, education. experience and abilities.

Anonymous said...

I think that your comments show how little you know about what goes on with Council! There is a heck of alot more you have to do than just attend Monday night meetings! Please! Have you ever listened to the "reports" section of the Council meetings where each one of them tells about everything they did the week before? They make little money for a whole lot of work, so clearly they must not be in it for the money!

As for Tracey Snyder, who is a single mother, she has a full time job in addition to her Council position, has a degree and is educated. You obviously dont know a thing about her. She really is a good person who loves this town. We would be lucky to have her at the State House!

Anonymous said...

Archer, If you have ever tried to have a conversation with Casso, you would know right away he is not better qualified, in fact he is not qualified.
He got support from the dem party specifically Val Vigil.
He was believed to be the new rising star.
Instead he has not represented anyone, in fact he has embarrassed himself and his family.
He is leaving the state house and the party is most likely releaved.

The only thing Janette Lewis should have named for her is a port-a-potty at one of our community parks because that structure is filled with the same thing she is. This is one of the meanest, cut throats there is. She has totally forgotten about the children of the community that she was elected to advocate for. Mrs. Lewis has dropped the students of the community by the wayside in effort to win friends and influence people, but if you’re not someone of standing or if you’re not being paid by Adams Dist. 14 to be her “Yes” man, she could care less about you or your children no matter how concerned you are about an issue. She will throw you under a bus in the blink of an eye if you disagree with her or undermine her authority. She has ruined our school dist. But thank God, she’s finally on her way out! There may be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Monday night Council Meetings are all that is required - the other "stuff" is fluff and is optional - sorry but it is true, Tracey has a degree in what from where, please don't embarass her further by saying DeVry or Westwood or Phoenix or College America.....if she has a real degree in a real subject from a real college and is as smart as you say then she doesn't need Council or the State House to make her feel important or make extra money - she can go get that hi profile job that she wants - oh by the way what is her job that she got with her degree that requires her level of intelligence - and what does it pay ( a range for the type of job will do)?

I do not put a lot of emphasis on educational degrees. Lets all remember that both Bush and Obama are products of "Ivy League" schooling.

I will judge My candidate on how they carry themselves and a track record of honesty and integrity.

Anonymous said...

I do not know Tracey Snyder well enough to know what her education background is.
I do know that she has worked hard and has been approachable, loves this city and wants the best for it.
I also know that Mr Casso was/is a substitue teacher. He became so full of himself, that he ruined his marrage while being a rep.
He does not respond to phone calls, never shows up at anything (even when he says he will).
So you, tell me who is better qualified. It isn't always about education!!!

Anonymous said...

Great Discussion. I for one have personally experience of Casso not getting back to me on a issue that was important to me.

I would like to tell anyone who has an idea of running for any elected office. Remember you are supposed to be the voice of the people who voted for you. Not getting into office and pushing your own agenda and your own personal ideas.

Team Tracey said...

I Disagree. Of Course you need to represent the people, but it is virtually impossible to make everyone happy. You need to have the character to make the good decisions for the greater good.

For House 32, Tracey would make a Great Candidate.

I have been watching these discussions on the blog and I think I can give a unique perpective on something I know about Tracey Snyder. Years ago I was suffering with terrible allergies. I was refered to an allergist specialty group that are quite good. I ended up having to take a whole bunch of allergy tests to find out what I was allergic to, and then I had to take shots. Who did my tests and then gave me my shots for months afterwards? None other than our own Tracey Snyder! Dont tell me that she isnt educated when a group of five doctors trust her to do tests and give shots that if arent done correctly can potentially cause you a severe reaction and even kill you! She was always kind and gentle, and very knowledgeable. Just like she is with our city. Tracey was in charge of the room where the shots are made, and she mixed thousands of shots that went to five offices. Some serious stuff!
Whenever she does something she goes all out! I say the people who are talking negatively meet her in person and find out what a great girl she really is!

Anonymous said...

I may not know Tracey as well as some of you do. But I do know that she will go the extra mile when it is something important. I find her to be attentive to details and most importantly be a listener. She is will to take on a issue no matter how difficult it is.

I am proud that she will be running for the House in 2012.

Jeanette Lewis did not have a building named after her. She and another person had a wing of a samll complex named after them. The persons doing the naming were the contractors who built the buildings. Lewis and the other person were board members who made the deals with the contractors to build the buildings. Unethical? A lot of people thought so.

Pro Casso said...

FYI ya all,
It takes more then a pretty face to be a real politician like a Colorado House Representative.
You have to be articulate. You have to have a vast knowledge on a array of issues. It is not a townie election where you get your family and friends to vote for you and you bask in the limelight for 8 years.

Team Tracey said...

Hey PRO CA**HOLE,
First off, you need to listen to our recent council meetings, the ones where Tracey Snyder is running them because our mayor is out of town. She runs them very smoothly and she is VERY well spoken.
And as far as a "vast" knowledge of the issues. DO you even know what a city council members has to deal with. They are actually in the trenches dealing with the people on a personally level. Tracey Snyder had to deal with Pit Bulls, Gambling, Major Development Decisions, Controversy with past and current city managers, Budgets in times of Good and in times of Bad. Hands down, Tracey Snyder has more "vast" knowledge then Ed Casso any day.

Whew, I feel better.

GN- love the earth day picture, and get those text messages, everyone I talk to is dying to see them.

Running for state house is not the same as running for city council. The big difference is party. State rep candidates are nominated by their own party and then run in the general election where there are thousands of voters and major offices – president, governor, senator, etc. Political party is a big deal, like it or not. Snyder lost to Casso a few years ago because she was a Republican and he is a Democrat. Now she is a Democrat, too? That may not sit well with everyone in the Dem party, and these are the voters who will actually nominate the D candidate. Was she a Democrat in 2008? Did she sit out the Obama/Hillary campaign? Does she support Obama now? Does she support Obama’s health care plan? Is she pro-union, including public employees? Where does she stand on public schools and education reform? Does she have the support of other party loyalists in Adams County? These are the questions her “fellow Democrats” will want answered. If he decides not to run again, it will be an open seat and there may be several Democratic candidates!

I am writing this to inform you of a new policy Community Leadership Academy has implemented. According to the letter sent home, it states that if any student is caught chewing gum in school they will be fined $2.00. If the student DOES NOT pay the fine they will NOT be allowed back into school until the $2.00 is paid.

Now as a parent of two children that go to CLA... I am outraged that they are willing to deny my kids an education over $2.00! I understand that they have to enforce certain rules, but I think this is taking it to far! It seems to me that they could keep the child after school or during recess to clean gum off desks or the floors or something else less extreme!

My 8th grade student was caught chewing gum yesterday on the 19th, however he was allowed back to school today. He was told that if he does not bring the money to school tomorrow on the 21st, they will NOT allow him back into school!

From my understanding, CLA has already lost one student to this rule! I guess we will see tomorrow if It becomes two! I refuse to pay, and will not stand for this!!

Dustin, Gateway News said...

Anonymous - Finally some intelligent thoughts on Snyder. you don't just switch parties unless all you care about is getting elected. A Republican is very unlikely to win that seat and the Dem party is very unlikely to support her if she ran as a Republican - she has no credibility with them regardless of how nice or smart she is (and I believe she is). this is real politics not non party affiliated City Council in the old little town of CC ( nice but little) - sorry.

Anonymous said...

Maybe someone should ask Tracey Snyder why she changed parties? Novel thought! Perhaps she has a good reason why she made that decision. I doubt that she did it to get elected. Everyone knows the tide swings one way and then swings the other. Changing parties is no guarantee of being elected. The Democrats should consider themselves lucky to have her. If they dont get behind her just because she was once a Republican than they are fools! She is a good leader! I believe she is one of the few for "all" of the people-regardless of what party they belong to!

Anonymous said...

The republican party is known for not being supportive in Adams county of those running for office there.
I think they must believe there is little chance to win, so they invest their dollars elsewhere.
I can imagine that could cause a ripple effect of disenchantment for many in their own party.
***I am not saying this is what happened to Snyder, I have no knowlege of her situation.

Anonymous said...

I think the reason Snyder changed parties is obvious - she couldn't get electded as republican so she switched parties - it is about her not you or any of us - she will be or do whatefver gets her elected - why can't you see that?

Anonymous said...

I agree with you completely. Tracey Snyder was a great candidate. She out debated Ed Casso, out walked him, just plain ole out worked him! And she didnt just go away after one loss- she ran for her seat right after and kept right on going. Then she was appointed Mayor Pro Tem and has done a great job! She has spirit and a will to serve. Good for her!

Everyone if you MISSED the Commerce City Council meeting on the internet tonight, make sure you go back and listen on the city's website starting tomorrow or watch it on Channel 8. It is shocking, they actually know that it takes money to run a school district and that as population increases, demand for service also increases. BRILLIANT! Also, Commerce City stop trying, Brighton has us covered, retail, shopping, medical, library, new swimming pool, rec center. Its ok, give it all the the city manager and the high paid staff. Don't worry about the residents anymore, its ok, we get it.

Hey Commerce City, don't worry about fixing the roads either, I heard there is going to be a citizen zip line right over to Brighton from the northern range.

Seriously Commerce City, what are you paying your city manager for? His staff tells you that you need a plan and alternative forms of funding? Where is his plan and where are his ideas? The city council and mayor are to vote approval or disapproval of the ideas, plans and work that the city manager puts together. How did that get so twisted around? Someone please pray tell what is the city manager being paid for? Other than smoking cigars at the Brown Palace Hotel and sitting in his home office or over at the Bison Grill?

At least Mayor Pro Tem Tracey Snyder speaks her mind and is not a "yes" person. I vote for people who vote and speak as their own person, even if sometimes that means I don't agree with them. Also, I vote for people that have shown that they appreciate and care for the people they are suppose to represent. The rest is all just a flip of a coin.

I was just reading the comment from the parent of students at CLA. You must remember that the immoral people running that school will do anything to make money. The Executive Director is someone that has manipulated his way in and takes over leaving no stone unturned if there’s a possibility there may be money under it. Maybe the Executive Director of CLA and Dist. 14 BOD pres. are related because their motives are to get what they want and "To Hell with the Students” Most everyone else would have conscience enough to realize that their actions could really hurt people, or worse, leave the students of Dist. 14 without an education. (That is a crime)

don't worry too much about the CLA just act like you don't speak English and they won't enforce any rules.
