Medical Marjiuana in Commerce City, What do you think???

Medical Marijuana coming to a city near you is not breaking news. It has been discussed in previous Commerce City council meetings and was even a question asked to the 2009 candidates at the Metro North Chamber of Commerce Thornton Forum recently.

So, it wasn't that surprising when a group came to the council meeting on September 28th wanting to gather information on where the city stands on the issue and expressing interest in setting up shop within the city limits.

Now, it is your turn to tell us what you think of the issue. Do you support it, oppose it, and more to the point, do you want it in Commerce City and why or why not?

I am surprised that no one has commented on this subject yet.

I have heard many strong opinions about this very subject.

So, with that being said, I will start as a ice breaker of sorts.

I am for the Medical Marijuana, not because the government says it is okay and not because they have rights to do business in the city.

Rather I am for medical marijuana because I have seen first hand, they people it can help. I am talking about loved ones who have suffered from cancer.

There is overwhelming evidence that shows marijuana can relieve certain types of pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms caused by such illnesses as multiple sclerosis, cancer and AIDS.
I agree with you, I am for medical marijuana for the very same reasons you said.

No need for Marijuana. There is a FDA drug called "Marinol", safer and does not require all of these shady establishments that can pop up in certain areas. Not all but some are.

If a drug helps an ailing person why shouldn’t we allow them to use it? Like all drugs it should be controlled and unfortunately until weed becomes a taxable commodity they need to purchase it from these “medical marijuana” establishments until the pharmacies are allowed to dispense it. The cons make no sense to me; like: having a bunch of people out on our roads and businesses high on marijuana, it will cause increased health issues, kids will thinks it’s ok to use..
Why is alcohol use legal? There are so many DUI’s resulting in injuries or death. What about underage drinking? Costs to health care for thing like: liver disease, addiction and rehabilitation. I guess the huge excise tax collected for Uncle Sam makes it tolerable.

Not only am I against medical marijuana in the city as a business, but I am against marijuana as a treatment, Cannabis smoking is likely to weaken the immune system. Infections of the lung are due to a combination of smoking-related damage to the cells lining the bronchial passage and impairment of the principal immune cells in the small air sacs caused by cannabis.

Colorado is one of the twelve states that allow the medical use of marijuana. In November of 2000 the majority of voters to allow patients with certain illnesses to use marijuana medicinally passed an amendment called Amendment 20. This is controlled by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. You must obtain a Medical Marijuana Registry identification card in order to use marijuana medicinally without facing criminal penalties.

To qualify for the medical use of marijuana you have to have a debilitating medical condition. These conditions include cancer, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, cachexia, severe pain, severe nausea, seizures not limiting the symptoms to epilepsy, and muscle spasms not limiting the symptoms to multiple sclerosis. A patient as well as a physician may send a petition to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to include other medical conditions that would benefit from the medical use of marijuana.

a lot of these medical marijuana shops are shady sketchy places, not all but a lot are. We need a set of guidelines and we need them quick

I think it is a good thing, if it taxed properly, and used by patients that really need it. I have worked in the end of life (i.e. cancer, aids, etc. care in California), I see these people in great pain not eating. The cannabis that is used in their treatment programs is just amazing, I really seen it help folks that are in pain. It seems to me that Commerce City and the rest of the nation just need to grow up and get these types of laws passed!

Brice, Sounds like you smoke cigarettes. That's ok but making a person's end of life a little more bearable is not.
I bet similar arguments were made during prohibition, and as we all know the need for increased tax dollars outweigh risk.

Is medical marijuana really this important? What happened to the core topics of education, public safety, infrastructure, fair taxation, etc. Is it really going to create enough revenue through taxes to cover the cost of regulation? I remain both critical and skeptical until our elected officials can figure out how to solve our current problems rather that create new ones.
