re: censure of jeannette lewis (d14)
I am so confused. Why now? Is she not out in a matter of weeks?
What exactly is censure?

Anonymous said...

In politics, a censure is an alternative to more serious measures against misconduct or dereliction of duty.

Censure is the public reprimanding of a public official for inappropriate behavior.

Archer said...

FUN FACT:
Andrew Jackson is the only sitting President to be successfully censured

King of Olive Street said...

If this censure thing in d14 is even true. I will still have to see it to believe it.
I know it will not pass.
It will fail to a vote of 3 to 2.
But, it being public, and getting at least 2 votes will have the desired outcome.
I would be curious if this has ever happened in Adams 14 history?
None the less, a very interesting turn of events.
First things first, is it really true. We will have to find out if it really is on the agenda.

Marcus, I suggest instead that most of our current politicians and aspiring politicians start by reading a 3rd grade civics text book - we wouldn't want to overload them at first - they would need to work up to Robert's Rules of Order.

Censure Lewis, thats a bunch of hog wash! What has she ever done to deserve nothing but praise from Commerce City? If the Board does this they are nuts, the only people that hate here are those that do not understand she is probably the most intelligent that has ever been on the Board. You people are just plain stupid!

Zeek said...

Censure is nothing to be taken lightly. But I agree, there needs to be a reason.
It is like all these Commerce City Council recalls.
Always a recall, but never any good reasons (real reasons) to do one. That is why they always fail.

Estelle Remington said...

Censure

To censure Jeannette Lewis would red flag her behavior/ decisions, while on Adams 14 Board and caution others when she tries to venture into political service in the future. I am very concerned for others in her judgmental path in the years to come.

Erin NW said...

Wow! thank you all. I am now well versed in the idea of censure.
I too would like to hear the reasons why?
Not really because I care that much, I am in 27J, I am just curious.

RSVP

In the past, Council members would RSVP for dinners and events paid for by taxpayer money then fail to attend these functions that were prepaid for them. On the Sept. 26th meeting, council discussed taking Discretionary funds away from those that failed to attend and/or assign someone to go on their behalf. There are many reasons members can not make an event but then assign a taxpayer to attend on your behalf. We would love to go! I agree, that if one fails to attend and fails to assign another person to represent members than that money should come out of one's Discretionary funds. Which means, less taxpayer money spent on the council member and put it back into the General Fund. When a member actually sees the amount of money wasted on events they don't attend they may start to take responsibility for wasting taxpayer's money. If, a member does not use his or her Discretionary fund then it should go back into the General fund and not be given to Charitable donations. That is saying that taxpayer money is selected for personal contribution which to my mind should not be legal.

funny how these south cc people profess their love for south cc and the good ole days where they had a huge income from the refineries and and industrial businesses but did nothing to improve south cc. They whine about the King Soopers deal that Shea Homes and Reunion brought to the north. CC only signed off on it everything was brokered by Shea but city council wants to take credit for kissing Shea's butt.

So, when giving praise, thank Shea and City Market not the political circus.
Watch, when Kings open in the north the same idiots complaining from the south will shop in the north because they hate where they live despite having a kings and walmart in their own neighborhood.

Received good news a couple of weeks ago. The news was that Dominick Moreno is going to run for State Representative in district 32. I was fortunate enough to attend his kickoff campaign and seen how many people were there to back him in this endeavor. There were also present a lot of persons there that are in political office to back him.
At this time the best decision you can make is to cast your vote for Dominick. He will be one of our greatest Representative ever.

Team Tracey said...

Bob,

He will be one of our greatest Representative ever?
Lets not go over board.
I don't know anything he did on his very very very short time on council being that memorable.
I think TS would be a far better choice.

Belle Creek Obsever said...

Curious,
Why would a censure be an agenda item. Why not just bring it up in administrative business? Why let everyone know, isn't element on surprise a better way to go.

*no dog in this one, I am in 27J.

Concern of CC Mayor,
Mayor abruptly left the Blue Stem Dinner. Was wondering if all is okay. I don't think they even touched their salads.
I know the current CC mayor would not want to stick the tax payers with a wasted $100 dinners. So something must have come up.

I agree with Team Tracey. Frankly, as a citizen of Ward 1, I am very dissapointed at Dominick wanting to bail on us not even halfway through his first term. Tracey has done a ton for our City, and she has done it in spite of a major medical injury. She came right back, and hasnt stopped. That is a leader. If you want a bailer, vote for Dominick. Maybe he will serve for a year and decide that the State isnt good enough for him, either. If you want a leader, vote Tracey. She will stick by us and not bail out!

Anonymous said...

I agree with Mayor Pro Tem Snyder, and what she said Monday night, in regard to the discressionary funds. She said "its not our money, its the people's money". She is right. At least one person on the Council understands that!
That is why we like her so much. She has a heart for our City, if something isnt working right, she tries to fix it, and she isnt afraid to admit when something isnt going right and find another way. She will stand up to the rude, like Benson (who tried to bully her again on Monday night, but she stands up to him) and she wont back down when she believes in something! She does a great job when she is Mayor. That is a leader!

Aaron, River Run said...

I found this on the internet. It is from the your hub.

I am shocked that past commerce city council did this. Where was the accountability?

Natale said one of the first things he did as mayor was to end the practice of having limousines waiting for City Council members when they arrived in Washington, D.C., for business. He was stunned the first time it happened after he was elected to the council.

“They argued that it was cheaper than a taxi,” he said. “Well, not when you have a limo for each council member.”

PM said...

Aaron,
About limo service,

Mayor Natale was talking about some of the current ones too, Teter, Bullock and Snyder. As all of them were on when Natale was.

(Moreno was not on, just keep that in mind when deciding your House 32 choice, if your a democrat.)

Anonymous said...

Team Tracey is getting a great deal of attention, and I can say I see why. In addition to all the great things they say about her, has anyone noticed the way things go on Council? Tracey has all of her discressionary funds in her account. Dominick has used almost all of his, to travel with, as he stated a few weeks back. Tracey asked the Council if she could attend an Econimic Developement two day conference, recommended by Brittany Morris, our ED Director, and the Council said no. So does anyone see some favortism here? Has anyone seen any benefits from these trips Dominick Moreno takes? I would think we would be much better off learning every bit we could about how to move our City forward with new business.
Now Benson asks the Council to sent him on a "high speed rail" conference that is after the election! They dont even know if he will be on Council in November! Jim has no business going to a conference that E 470 did not even choose him to go to! Does anyone see high speed rail coming to Commerce City?
I think we would be much better off learning about how to bring business to Commerce City than we would be spending money on high speed rail!
Also it really is upsetting that they again would not let Tracey use her available funds to purchase school supplies for kids in need, so she did it with her own money. Something is seriously wrong here! Let Dominick run around all over the place, on the City dime, but not allow Tracey to give our kids some school supplies?

Tracey you keep going! Most of us are smart enough to see what is going on! You have a bright future, and we are very proud of you!

No Common Sense!!!!!! said...

What the hell!
NO Jim cant go to something after the election, he most likely be a regular citizen.

"Benson asks the Council to sent him on a "high speed rail" conference that is after the election!"

Not to mention, your right, when the hell is a high speed rail coming to Commerce City, much less Colorado!

I am personally voting for Kristine Sumner for Ward II

Vote No on 3D

Decades of increasing school funding has not increased student test scores. It has created jobs for teachers and revenue for their unions that almost exclusively support Democratic politicians. These politicians sustain tax-funded schools as a monopolistic cartel that squashes competition and limits choice for parents and taxpayers.

Nationally, per-pupil spending has more than doubled since 1973, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Meanwhile, standardized test scores have been stagnant.

According to The Nation's Report Card, 2008 math and reading scores were "not significantly different from" scores in the early 1970s.
Colorado is similar. Between 1997 and 2008, per pupil spending increased by 21%, according to inflation-adjusted NCES data. But the Denver Post reported that "scores on Colorado's annual academic assessment again came back flat, a trend that continues year after year. The announcement of no change in scores has become a yearly mantra."

If standardized test scores don't track with increased tax funding for schools, what does? Here's what: teacher’s union contributions to political candidates who support the public school cartel. Inflation-adjusted teacher’s union contributions have almost doubled since 1990, according to OpenSecrets.org. In each year, at least 94 percent of contributions are toward Democratic candidates.

Last year, the Colorado Education Association gave "$1 to Republicans for every $235 given directly to Democrats," reports IndependentTeachers.org.

What do Democrats tend to do after teachers unions help get them elected? Last year's "teacher bailout" is an example. A Democratic Congress and president sent states $26 billion in tax money to prevent teacher layoffs. These bailed out teachers pay union dues to again support politicians to further entrench the cartel.

But while test scores have been flat, unionized teacher employment has soared. According to NCES data, student-teacher ratios have decreased from 21 in 1973 to 15 in 2008. Using NCES data, education policy analyst Andrew Coulson found that government school employment doubled since 1970, while enrollment increased by only 10 percent.

If you really care about supporting children's education, you should not tolerate government's requiring you to fund schools just because you live near them. This is counterfeit caring — like saying you want to see good movies, but having a stranger choose which movies you see. Voting for 3D would perpetuate such counterfeit caring and cripple the ability to make a real difference.

If I wanted to enrich unions and politicians who support a wasteful public school cartel, I would vote for 3D. But since I want better education for all children, I ask my politicians to support education tax credits, which promote diversity and choice for Colorado's families.

About limo service...
Are we not tired of this subject? Ok, so I spoke to some people and this is what I found out. The City had a contract for many years, and many Councils, with a towncar service in DC. And Tracey Snyder and Kathy Teter said that when they went out there, the schedule was set up so that Councilmembers flew together and took the same towncar to the hotel, thus saving the City money! Towncars!! Not stretch limos as some would have you believe! And in groups, not one for each Councilmember!

And if anyone decides to base their choice on the House District race on this lame story, they need help. Snyder is way more qualified than Moreno. End of story.

Sean Ford's council forgot to pass an admissions or seat tax on the Kronke facility to the tune of millions of dollars of missed taxes for CC. Which is worse? A failure to protect the taxpayers or an arrest record? Sort of the pot calling the kettle, black! When, voters petition for a Recall they have to have a certain percentage of petition signers of the actual votes cast for said person in an election. He is not perfect, but he is willing to stand up for the people and what is right.
He does have a past. But we all make mistakes.
Robert Toavs is not a politician, he is just a good regular guy.
I am voting for Robert Toavs.
I urge all of you who are not voting for anyone to really think about it.
Robert will make a good mayor.

Warren,

I'm pretty sure what the mayor means is one of the candidates for Mayor is bankrupt, has no career or any prospects, lives off his fathers name and is the most financially corupt Mayor the city has ever seen.

Does that answer your question?

Reunion Forum

One of the few privileges we have left to us from our forefathers in America is the right to vote. I urge everyone to get themselves informed by attending the Reunion Forum on Saturday, Oct. 8th between 10 am and 1pm at the Reunion meeting center. Every candidate is important to our future as a city. We could put Commerce City back ten years depending on who we vote for. Someone on this blog had mentioned our forefathers that first gave us the right to vote. Our first leaders were wealthy landowners with lots of Indian lands under land grants from the King of England of which several were blackmailing each other for inappropriate behavior with each others wives. William Penn was one of the good guys, Lords Baltimore and Delaware not so hot. One will find even in history the good, the bad and the ugly. That is what each one of us needs to decide for ourselves. I wish each candidate right along with their declaration to run for office would declare the truth about them selves and their political records. Both, Joe and Robert should have held a news conference and said this is part of my record, etc. Sean has so much of a financial mess dragging behind him, I don't know how he expects to overcome that with the taxpayers! People want to bad mouth Jim Benson but he is squeaky clean compared to Sean Ford.

No one in their right mind would vote for a person who has a multiple arrest record and just beat up someone a few months ago. I heard that the victim had to go to the hospital. Is this true? The pressure on a person in public office is often overwhelming and is certainly not for a person prone to this type of instability.

Estelle Remington said...

Reunion's Meet and Greet

I attended Reunion's Meet and Greet and wanted to pass on information to those that could not make it. I believe transparency in politics is needed for trust to develop between candidates and voters. I can understand why a candidate running for office would be reluctant to bring up his or her arrest record first thing. But, eventually, one has to open up to the public. In truth, many of us have experienced the same kind of things as Robert Toavs, only, we did not get arrested for it. A divorce that turned ugly over community property; drugs found in a vehicle, doesn't matter who put them there; trying to help friends and family members and trouble over renters, etc. and come to the attention of the law. The difference is that most of us settle these things without coming to legal attention. Once a person comes to the attention of the law they are more likely to repeat those contacts over again. Robert is a work in progress and trying to find a balance in his life. I believe he is sincere in wanting to make a difference in his community. Moreover, we all need to take responsibility for our actions and poor choices. So, there it is folks, now, let's move on!

I found the ladies running for school board,Mary and Anita, to be committed and ready to make some changes. We may never know the complete damage to Adams 14 SD by Jeannette Lewis but we need to rebuild from here. We need to take advantage of Larry Quintana's experience and knowledge. I have known Larry for years and he is a good man and he is committed to helping these children.

I must say that I was totally shocked at the lack of Ccuncil participation at Bobbie Cralls memorial! Tracey spoke, Paul, Rene and Tony Johnson were there. And if you count a late and then brief appearance by Dominick, that was it! What happened to the days when Council came out to show their support for such events? Bobbie was a pillar of our community! Shame on the rest of Council!

I just had a talk with Tracey Snyder over the weekend. I did not know her, and after the blog being lit up every week with alot of support, I thought I would talk to her. Wow! Tracey went through a horrific accident, and really understands the state of our healthcare system these days! And she showed us some of the policy they make on that Crime Prevention committee she sits on! Impressive indeed! She would make an excellent State Representative! What does it matter that she changed parties? She has real life experience to draw on, has been a great Mayor Pro Tem, and really understands what our lives are like in our community. Thanks for the visit and the talk Tracey!

Team Tracey said...

Isnt is funny that all of a sudden Dominick Moreno and Jim Benson are just now talking about the Comcast program that enables children from low income areas to get internet and a computer, when Tracey Snyder brought that forward months ago when she reached out to Representative Ed Casso for help, and he would not give her anything except a hard time? Tracey is always being treated miserably by Ed Casso, and yet he is supposed to be for our people. Yeah, right! Remember those famous words Ed told Tracey, as proven to us by the Gateway News-"He(ED)would make sure his candidate(Dominick) would have every financial and insitutional advantage" Has anyone watched Dominick lately? Becoming more and more like Ed Casso everyday. No thanks! Team Tracey stands up to bullies like Ed Casso, and we dont need another Ed at the State House! Vote Snyder for State House District 32!

Dissapointed in Moreno said...

So Dominick Moreno thinks he did a great thing taking away the pennies per month the Councilmembers get for retirement when they turn 60? Well folks, I ask you this- if he is such a proponent for the working class, why would he take away retirement benefits for Council, that have been benefits for many decades now? Do Councilmembers not work very hard, lose countless hours of family time, and get paid next to nothing to do it? So how can you be a big union man who supposedly supports keeping workers benefits, but then turn on your own Council? Where does it stop with you Mr. Moreno? The FOP? The City workers themselves? Tony Johnson is right- you are an idiot!

We talked awile back. He was asking for my vote and I said yes but I asked him to call me.  I had a few city questions for him. He still hasn't called me. So will he ever call when he is Mayor?
I talked to Robert one time and he said we should have a cup of coffee and talk. So we talked on the phone and had a coffee over at Stefines coffee shop. He listened. Most people just talk. It's good to find someone like Robert that cares.

Listed below are the Democratic candidates who are running in local municipal and school board races.

COMMERCE CITY CANDIDATES
Mayor - No Democrats running

City Council At-Large (two seats)
Paolo Diaz (Incumbent by vacancy) - 303-668-0542 paolo@paolohdiaz.com
Steven J. Douglas - 720-205-2621 douglassrjr@comcast.net
Crystal Elliot - 303-406-3893 crystal4c3atlarge@gmail.com
Gene Leffel - 303-287-3075 mrglonbb@yahoo.com

City Council Ward II
Jim Benson (Incumbent) - 303-288-7011 jimbensonwardii@comcast.net
Jolene Vialpando-Nielsen- 720-280-7778 Jolene.Vialpando@gmail.com

City Council Ward IV
Harvest Thomas - 303-519-2643 HarvestforCouncil@yahoo.com

So, now comes the question. Who is Tracey Snyder supporting for Ward IV? Her own ward?
It would have to be the Democratic right?
It would make no sense for her to support a known Republican, right?
That would be like flipping parties just to get elected.

Something to think about.

I personally think someone who was a Democrat right off the bat and stayed that way would be a much better choice.

Many times, I write information just for the sake of getting information to the public. I would never tell anyone who to vote for! In 2006, I was on the CAC committee to revise the old Travel and Expense plan for CC. During those years, I remember a few meal charges where more than half of it was for alcohol. The story went around that a group of three council members were at a conference in Las Vegas and instead of eating the meals at the conference went across the street to the most expensive restaurant in Las Vegas and the three spent between $600 to $800 for meals and alcohol mostly alcohol. (I heard two different figures.) This was during Sean Ford's administration So, when one says responsible and professional one has to tell it like it was! Personally, I don't know that I will vote for Mayor. I would like to see the threat of a Recall for whoever gets voted in as a means of keeping that Mayor aware of what the voters might do if we slide back into the old "good ole boy" attitude.

yeah, something else that scares me about some of the candidates:
not used to having money so will spend frivolously with other peoples money. Estelle gives a good example - Can't afford an expensive restaurant on their own salary but carefree with tax dollars.
Can a person who only knows no frills beer make the right wine choices for the city recovering from poor choices made by past no frills beer drinkers?

Hot Air in Eagle Creek and 2011 Candidates

Only 18% of registered voters, voted in this last election. That means that 82% have dropped out of the process. So, these are people that for one reason or another never made a choice. However, our City Charter gives all the registered voters a right to petition for Recall when that elected official fails to preform their duty while in office. It is our constitutional right given to us by our City Charter which extends through to the State of Colorado. In ten years of living in CC, I have never signed a Recall petition but I would if the situation demanded it. The past behavior of the two candidates running for Mayor must be considered when voting for Mayor because they represent the future of CC. CC is at a crossroads with this election.

Hopefully, when Jeannette Lewis leaves the BOE more information will be forthcoming on her activities behind closed doors when she will not have Adams 14 SD lawyers to protect her which cost the school district thousands of dollars to defend against. Some years, legal fees exceeded $100,000 dollars. Believe me, this censure is not just for the bullying one saw on camera.

Sean Ford's political flyer says he will attract business with more job opportunities to CC. City staff performs all of these duties and his one vote does little to attract business and jobs to CC. It must be the soccer suite or the Golf Course. Sean says he will cut excess spending when his administration spent more excess than previous administrations. As former Mayor, Sean did not increase economic development in fact his administration forgot to pass an admissions tax on Kronke Enterprises costing CC millions in future tax fees.
